Happy The Clown | 4K | GGI Animated Film

4K CGI animated short film created using only Blender3D, and a little bit of Krita. Music created in Garageband.
I created the character "Happy The Clown" and the animation, as I was interested to see how blender handles 4K. I will be uploading the making of video so check that out.
What I discovered from this project.
- Cycles and Workbench work great, but you need a really top range GPU to render a long animation in Cycles at 4K, You will need a really high sample size to remove noise, otherwise your rely on the denoiser. Not good for 4K when you want pixel perfect results. (It's render farm time).
- Eevee shadows are not good in Blender version before 4.2 even with shadows set to 4096. And in 4.2 shadows still don't look 4K ready (blurry which can be okay but was not the style I wanted, some edges looked jagged). However, ambieant occlusion, and screen space reflections look very good. I did not use them in this version of the animation. Checkout my KZbin short version when uploaded to see a full featured Eevee render, but only HD.
- Initially I planned to add Line art. Both FreeStyle and Grease pencil looked good initially the lines are very smooth, but both had problems that just did not look right in 4K.
- 4K Texture painting is okay, but Blender can be very slow when painting anyway , and the anti-aliasing is not great. Which is bad when your trying to get 4K detail. So I kept the design simple , but still used textures res 4096x4096 which is very big. As I had not planned the camera positions.
The 3D mesh needs a high poly count to have smooth edges and surface detail in 4K, so I aimed for a simple design style. This animation only need 673,085 tris.
This render was 1238 frames, 30 frames per second, 4K resolution of 3840x2160, each frame was saved as a PNG (you need a lossless format to preserve the detail), and required 25+GB of storage.
