I feel like the only generation where that variety kind of faltered was the PS3 and 360, since so many companies were chasing the exact same genres and types of games. That's a huge problem with the triple A industry nowadays too, but I feel like the PS4 and PS5 have a lot more games of varying genres from smaller companies like back in the PS1 and PS2 days again.

@@Plexipal I'll gladly take 1995 over 2024. :P Better yet, the late 80's/early 90's. Anyways! The PS1 launch was pretty spectacular, not 'Dreamcast'-spectacular, but still excellent nonetheless, with the likes of Ridge Racer, Battle Arena Toshinden, Rayman(This and Astal for Saturn were top tier 32 bit 2D platformer pixel art) , ESPN Extreme Games(A multiplayer gem nobody really talks about.), and maybe Project Raiden. But it wasn't until Jumping Flash! and especially Resident Evil 1 when my jaw was melting to the floor. lol The latter was totally revolutionary and obviously the true birth of survival horror. Also, the peeps down at Micro-Play back in 95' were mumbling that the Saturn was on it's way out and that it would be a much smarter move to jump on PlayStation. Boy were they right! I got one the day after it launched with Battle Area Toshinden, Rayman & Ridge Racer, after selling my Sega Saturn. The PS1's console and controller designs were so bizarre and unique for their time. Even the name PlayStation sounded super weird. And the obvious edge in 3D polygon power made it a no brainer. It's just too bad it's near impossible to recapture that feeling we all had back in 95 with PS1, playing the PS1 in 2024. This stands for any older console unfortunately.

I remember geeking out about playing Final Fantasy in 3D for the first time, it felt surreal. It had so many great games. And I was a hardcore Nintendo and Sega fan back then, I was skeptical of Playstation,. but they delivered. I remember having a Saturn first and loving it, but when I got Playstation it just had so many more games, and I very rarely went back to my Saturn. I started " gaming " when I was 4 years old, by way of just watching my uncle play. I picked up a controller when I was 6 years old, and haven't put it down since. Nintendo and Sega were the first systems in my house, and when I was 7, the PS1 was only a couple of years old at the time, I got it for Christmas. There are so many memories of watching my cousins play Zelda and Resident Evil, and then getting to play those games for myself. Crash Bandicoot and Spyro were some of my favorites. I was HOOKED. And then I discovered Final Fantasy 7 and 8, and The Legend of Dragoon. FF8 and Legend of Dragoon are both top 5 for me. They made such an impression. I make it a point to play FF8 every few years and I play Legend of Dragoon every single year, and I have since it came out in North America. There were so many games I played back then, but those are definitely the ones that have stuck with me the longest.

My absolute earliest memory I have of seeing the PS1 for the first time was around 1997, so it had already been out for a while in the UK. One of the neighbours was the first on my road to get one and I remember going round to see it and they were playing Ray Man and Bust-A-move. I remember thinking 'Meh...for the latest console, the games don't look much better than Mega Drive I have at home'. My older brother bought a PlayStation that same year with several games (Tomb Raider 2, Gran Turismo etc) which absolutely showcased what this console could do and my life was changed forever. I still have a PlayStation which I use to this day and I'm now showing it off to my 2 and half year old son. I hope to pass down this legacy of games and wonderful memories to him, and hopefully he'll grow up loving it as I did all those years ago.

I was alive and I was there as a teenager and I can tell you...the Playstation made such a colossal impact that I sold my newly purchased N64 a year later in early 1998 with Mortal Kombat 4 and Star Fox 64 to a pawn shop in exchange for a PS1 because even in 1998 there was banger, after banger, after banger of games that had already come out for that system with more on the way like Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3 and others coming out that were getting hyped like crazy from gaming magazines, commercials and friends at school. I essentially sold my N64 to get games like Metal Gear Solid, Soul Blade, Castlevania SOTN, Twisted Metal 2, Tomb Raider 2, and so forth. My only two regrets after I sold my N64 was when Zelda OOT came out that holiday season of 1998 and Cruis'n World finally got a port in Sept 98. Nintendo is very important and paved the way continuing to innovate to this very day with systems like Switch, but Playstation helped mainstream gaming even further and drive things forward in such a way that cannot be denied or duplicated.
