That's just what HBO did for the Dune Prophecy series that concluded Sunday 22 Dec. Okay, okay, let's get down to business. Joel is correct, never go to an audition with "extra work" on your resume. However, I did Background Work from 1993 until 2000, working mostly on a TV series (SAG/AFTRA), and made pretty good money. And I got, May, June, July and part of August off to do other things!! Like movies, commercials and print. From that I transitioned into Casting and then Radio. And it was all because of the work I did and the contacts I made. Casting was a little more jaded. In Casting the prerequisite to work as an extra was: "Can you reflect light?" But I encourage anyone to try it. Just remember, it's Show BUSINESS! Not SHOW Business.
