Me too! So when I got my service dog and went to a week's worth of training, someone asked and the owner/trainer explained that they can be potty trained and are basically no bigger than say a German Shepard or Golden! she also said, they can curl up on the floor just like dogs!! Apparently, the miniature horses are able to do everything a service dog can do, but often times can provide more comfort, perhaps someone who needs a service animal, but is allergic to dogs...just an example. I have never seen one in person. but being a counselor, I have been to equestrian (spelling?) therapy sessions with clients, but no mini's around! :) Our animal kingdom that we have been blessed to have is sooooo amazing!!
@julievirkus7855 жыл бұрын
Miniature horses also are viable as service animals 3 times longer than a canine! They also need a set of tennis shoes to cover their hooves! Shoes keep them from marring and slipping on floor surfaces.

I understand when someone doesn't see his tags at first, but it is soo rude when they do and I have told them multiple times not to. like really stop u are rude af. and endangering my life. so Caitlin thank you for being respectful. it's a breath of fresh air because so many ppl arnt

my friend trained her dog to be a service dog, and she was telling me how people kept coming up and petting him without her permission and distracting him from his training. if i see a dog in a shopping mall or anywhere to be honest even a pet dog i always ask permission to pet said dog its being respectful to do so.

Gigi soglamorousipeeglitter legally that's what they are, medical equipment not pets obviously. They are living breathing animals but they're medical equipment to someone, that's not a bad thing, and saying they are doesn't mean you don't love them it's not meant to be a bad label because it's what they truly are

First time seeing one of her videos, and I originally thought it was a scam too. A pleasant surprise to see her go right down the line of true service dog requirements and use - and point out the offenses as well. Particularly liked her appeal to not give true service dogs and their handlers a bad name by trying to scam the system.

Temperament and TRAINING! You have to be willing to put in hundreds of hours of training to complete the tasks that someone with a disability needs them to complete...even if you pay someone thousands of dollars to train your dog...you have to continue that training once they are home with you. It's a RESPONSIBILITY - NOT A PRIVILEGE.
@HappyTailsAnimals8 жыл бұрын
That is very true, you do have to continue training.

Tina Jackson soooo very true my service dog still isn’t perfect and it will never be, it’s ALOT of work having a dog, and it’s ALOT HARDER to own a service animal. cream (my Bernese mountain dog service dog) helps me with my agoraphobia/anxiety, even though it seems cool to have a service dog, its really not as fun as you may think, you get stoped a lot and you have to deal with people that know anything about this, so they pet your service animal or talk to it and it’s hard to deal with it, especially when your a small teen that can’t control her emotions (I have agoraphobia, it’s not just me being a moody teen)

Kalora4life my dog is still a puppy, and does all the stuff like bark at people and get excited. She is still very young so, do I give up on trying to make her a service dog because of these temperaments, or are temperaments able to be trained away.

My chihuahua mix was an ESA for my mom, until she passed! He’s very good at comforting, and he also naturally detects my anxiety attacks and panic attacks! (I am not claiming he is an SD in any way, he is a senior that is aggressive to anyone outside of our family) but today I was panicking bc my dad was screaming at me for defending my brother, and Titan (my dog) laid down on my lap and put his legs up on my chest. He blocked me from grabbing my neck (which I do when having a panic attack, typically grabbing till it’s raw) and comforted me which lowered the effects of the attack and brought me back to reality! He’s no service dog, I’m not even diagnosed with an anxiety disorder (but I think I have three, panic disorder GAD and SAD) bc my dad scares me sometimes, when he’s really mad. Just wanted to share what my little chihuahua mix rescue could do! Edit: Whoops! I meant verbally defending my brother. My dad was trying to force him into this camp that he didn’t want to go to and I told him that since he was always claiming we should be adults (I’m only 11) that he should let my brother make that desicion.

mattia dizard I would recommend a service dog
@josiemcdonell9837 жыл бұрын
I would recommend a service dog! Here is some info! There are different branches of service dogs. Medical alert SDs (Service dogs,) alert their handlers before something like a seizure, pass-out spell, ect., occurs. Mobility support SDs are usually large and can pull wheelchairs, let their handler brace on them, and pull forward. Seeing eye and hearing SDs, guide their handler, or alert them, ect. Psychiatric SDs are for mental disabilities, such as being Bipolar, Anxiety, Austim, PTSD, ect. I have a Psychiatric SD. If you got one, with the disabilities that you are explaining you have, you would get a Psychiatric SD. Do I qualify for a SD? Ask a psychiatrist. To qualify for a SD, your mental or physical disability must affect two or more of your daily tasks. Ex: Going to work or school, going to the store, ect. If so, think about if having a SD will positively or negatively affect your disability. In some cases, it will negatively affect it. With a SD, lots of people will ask you questions about it and why you need it. Can my pet be trained as a SD? Yes! As long as the dog is food motivated, good with dogs, kids, and cats, and potty trained. Heres some Psychiatric SD tasks: Providing “deep pressure therapy” to minimize the severity and duration of anxiety or panic attacks. This involves the dog using his weight, to apply pressure to the handler’s body, in places that typically elicit a calming effect. Using the following behaviors to alert, interrupt or alleviate anxiety or panic: licking the handler’s face or hands, pawing at the handler and otherwise physically engaging the handler. Assisting the handler, who experiences visual or auditory hallucinations by indicating whether something is or is not present. Assisting handler with Night Terrors by: waking up handler from night terrors, turning on lights, bringing emergency medications, waking up a family member and taking additional action that may be needed to help the handler calm down. Leading handler to a safe place during anxiety or panic attacks. Alerting to impending panic attacks, anxiety attacks. Responding to suicidal ideation by interrupting morbid thoughts, alerting another person that help is needed, bringing the handler a phone or calling 911 on a phone equipped for the dog to use. Reminding handler to take medication. Guiding handler home or to a safe place during times of memory loss or a associative episode. Interrupting self harming behavior. You need to get a professional trainer to help you. You can also buy a vest offline. Do I need an ID? Nope! Don't pay for those internet scams! Store or restaurant employees can only ask two questions: Is this a service dog? And: What task does it preform for you? Its illegal for them to ask your disability, or for ID or proof. All you need is to be 100% disabled- Mentally or physically, and a perfectly trained dog. THE DOG MUST BE TRAINED TO DO AT LEAST ONE TASK OR IT'S CONSIDERED AN ESA (Emotional Support Animal.) NOT A SD.

bay19 psychiatric service dogs are very real and important. They can alert to anxiety attacks, provide security in public spaces, maintain perimeters to help their handler feel safer, provide deep pressure therapy to calm, and other legitimate service tasks. Please don't judge what you do not know. PTSD is considered a disability under the ADA and absolutely a great candidate for having a service animal. Don't judge what you don't know.

I have fibromyalgia and post polio syndrome. which means I have poor balance and chonic pain and chronic fatigue,which is different than just being tired all the time. I picked my puppy out at the spca knowing I was going to train him as a service dog. H was two months old and very mellow,and very easily trainable. When I had him trained at about one year old, I set about training him in public. I went to my local sheriffs office and got the paperwork for my vet and my dr. Then I took it back to the sheriff, they then sent me a tag for his coolar stating he was a service dog. He is a boxer/bull mastiff and weighs 80#. He is perfect for a mobility dog. Bryce and I try to educate people every time we are out, and we really apreciate your doing the same.

As a person with the need for a trained service dog....THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. I had my agency trained service dog walking in a restaurant, when suddenly a table we were walking by a dog popped out (large and pitbull like) started aggressively barking and lunging at my dog. My dog just stood there looking at the dog like "what are you doing dude??" LOL...But it was very scary....thank God the group at the table stopped this dog before he got to my dog. I was scared for my dog...ready to fall down in front of my dog. First, I love my dog, but I also DEPEND on her for what she does for me. I am usually a quiet introvert....but I was so shocked that I blurted out...THAT DOG IS NOT A SERVICE DOG. The man, I guess the one who claimed this dog, claimed his dog just wanted to say HI to my dog....(good one dude, except real SERVICE DOGS would NEVER want to just say HI at all let alone by barking and aggressively lunging) He (the man) then continued to harass me even three tables away claiming that I didn't know anything about ADA and he is a veteran....I said yes I do and that dog is not a trained service animal. He, in his anger asked if I wanted to see his card he carries. I said yes please and tell me what website you bought it off of...LOL....he turned in his seat and didn't say another word!! Of course I never say the Now just so you know....if that dog had been able to get away from that guy and attack (behavior showed attack mode) my dog.....I WOULD HAVE SUED HIM AND THE RESTAURANT. Part of the lawsuit would be the fact that a trained animal costs thousands of dollars, but I depend on my dog, for my life (no exaggeration) and of course I have a very deep love for my special service "puppy", actually 8 years old now. The second part would be for him trying to pass the dog off as a service dog. So PLEASE people, this guy may not have know his dog would react that way and thought he could "get away" with it, know that not only falsifying a dog as a service animal hurts people that really need one, but your pet being passed off as service, could be unpredictable. Service animals are trained for around or more than 18 months after birth. I wish there was a way to protect our noble Service Dogs who give up basically their puppyhood for a great cause by somehow weeding out the "fake service dogs". (don't misread that....the puppies get to play, but their play consists of what they will need to do for their owners, instead of say....play tug of war. just an example. IMO Service Dogs earn extra stars for being so highly trained.

Put remember if you are a handler in training and so is your dog! It's okay to have days where its rough during the training process, just remember to redirect the dog and move on. Dogs are dogs and they aren't perfect so it's okay to have a bad day. Such as ( your dog accidentally looks at a child and wags it tail or something minor ) but you redirect it. and it's all good. If its something major mistake (jumps in public but not destructive just playful ) go outside and get it back into training mode and then continue with the day. Its gonna be okay! You got this!

so from my understanding, you have your disability and have your dog trained and it's essentially a service dog then? you don't need to register it as such?
@tuckergutierrez5228 жыл бұрын
In america youre not legally required too register/carry an ids for service animals! A store also cant ask you for 'proof' or ask you about your disability. However service animals are highly trained animals, and they have too be trained too do at least one specific task their handler is unable too do so for themselves. (Pick up an object, stablize their handler, or alert their handler of a upcoming seizure.) If youre confident in your training skills you hypothetically could train your own dog depending on its purpose, and once its trained you can take it out in public. Vests and registration help you gain access since youll get questioned less and seem more creditable.
@Thisisntus7 жыл бұрын

KevinxDoll It depends where you live. I'm in Vermont, and we go by federal law. people may ask if your dog is a device dog, and what it is trained for. they may not ask about your disability. Across state lines in New Hampshire, they have stricter state laws. Dogs and handlers must be identified by vests and lanyards.

I have a question, I have really bad separation anxiety/depression and I've had it for 3 years. My parents and I have thought about getting me a service dog since being alone triggers these problems. Do you think this is the right treatment? What dog would you recommend.
@HappyTailsAnimals7 жыл бұрын
+Autumm it can be a good idea if you know what the dog needs to do to help you with your condition, he does need to do a physical task for you.

+Rose Wright just because someone has anxiety does not mean they need an esa. Service dogs do perform task work for psychiatric disorders. You can have a service dog for anxiety.

Try asking yourself some questions. This may help some if trying to figure out if a service dog is the right fit for you. 1. Are your issues disabling? 2. Do dogs help you with your anxiety/depression. 3. Are you able to care for a dog. 4. Are you able to effectively train/afford a service dog. (Acquiring a trained service dog ranges, but is usually around $20,000) 5. Are you ok with dealing with the public (people talking to you, trying to pet dog.) Now if being alone is the issue I would suggest an ESA if your housing doesn't allow pets, of course no one knows you better than yourself and if you'd need the dog out in public. As for breeds Golden Retrievers and Labs are a great fit, German Shepherds are also common but make sure to find a breeder who breeds for a calm temperament. I do not suggest doodles as they're known to have behavioral issues. I wish you luck!

I have severe cystic fibrosis and my service dog Roy is an angel. He is an English bull dog and he's only two so he is still growing but he's been trained since he was six months old. No joke he's a sweetie!!! Now it's kind of weird but I got a vest for him that says please ask to pet because when I'm fine and I feel perfect I'll let them once because we have an alert sound that we use that I use to alert him. It's a very loud cough or I will clap and he will be there IMMEDIATLEY. So I might let some people let him because during training they found out he has a a special personality where he can not be distracted from the handler. So he's a special dog.

Assuming that our dogs meet all of the standards, how do you actually go about registering a service dog? There are a lot of fake websites but I am curious as to how you could legally make an animal a service animal.

The letter from your doctor is what makes it legal. There is no such thing as a registered service dog.

You do not need to register your service dog. As long as you have a diagnosed disability and your dog is task trained to assist with that disability you qualify. However, your dog must be trained either by you or a professional for public access and for your disability related tasks. Service dogs (real and fake) can be denied access for misbehavior.

Props to you, there needs to be more videos like this, taking an informative approach that isn't hostile or condescending towards dog owners who are interested in training or acquiring a service dog. I do see how owners and their 'fake' service dogs can have a huge impact on the lives of people with 'real' service dogs, but making a video like this is 1000x more effective, when a large percentage of people just have not been well informed as to the work and dedication that goes in to living with a service dog (not to mention having the disabilities to begin with). I feel that would do wonders to weed out the owners who would otherwise be 'faking' their sevice dogs, and to improve the behaviors of the fake dogs and owners who are still left

I've been diagnosed with crps since 2008. I actually adopted mine from the local humane society. shortly after I adopted her I noticed that she had a really weird way of being able to break the pain and anxiety cycle as more pain more more anxiety (increased heart rate). And I took the long, long time of 4 years of training her and I took her to my local service dog school and they said that I was successfully able to train her. however due to my illness I require a walker and I find it's just easier to have her in a infant car seat travel system.

Great video thank you for educating people. Also giving people a direction for a possibly of having that extra security a service dog gives. I was lucky to be able to train my Geist as a diabetic alert dog. He also was showing a natural alert. Which start our journey on this endeavor after much research. I was lucky also to have trained animals as a career. But I did and do rely on a professional that works with service dogs. It also helps when in the process of training if you are the trainer to keep logs of the process. Recording the self training keeps a record for showing the dog completed learning the tasks needed for that type of service dog. Should any serious questions arise on the ability of your dog.

@EquineZoe8 жыл бұрын
+Jay York I believe there are a few books on Amazon that help.. It's really complicated, but I would get a book to really explain. My sister has a diabetic alert dog. It's really amazing. But if you want a dog that has the lines of a DAD (diabetic alert dog) I would look into "Tattle Tail scent dogs". Yes spelled exactly like that. It's a great program and will be having a litter soon. You can also sign up for their classes, they are online classes but you must pay for it. It's around $40 a class. But it really helps. Hope this helps 😊

@mlposten8 жыл бұрын
+Jay York I agree there are books you can research like Training Your Diabetic Alert Dog by Rita Martinez CPDT-K, Sue Barns Ph.D. There are others out there also. I would recommend having a trainer available to help you one hopefully experience in service dogs and scent training. . Do your research first get as much info. There are trainers that offer classes like one in Seattle who travels but I don't know how good the classes are as I have not participated in them. I know obedience is number one. You have to have a dog focused on work and mannered. You have to be consistent in your training. Good thing to do is log your progress. Be positive in your training and patient. Lots of thing to do. But do the research and be honest with yourself if you are capable of training or if your dog is a good candidate. Some dogs and people find training difficult and some dogs aren't right for the work at hand.

I have horrible anxiety, I dont know if I would need a service dog, or just an emotional support animal, or if I'm just overreacting... I don't faint, every once on a occasion, I get really dizzy and have to sit down, but I mostly have really bad anxiety attacks and/or panic attacks. I cry heavily, I twitch, and turn uncontrollably, my breathing becomes short, rough, fast, breaths, I can bearly move around, and they last about 1 minute to 2 minutes. My mom is an RN, and I don't want to ask her for anything until I'm sure I should probably get one. I am not directly diagnosed by a doctor yet, and I am on an anxiety pill called Kava Kava sense I refuse to take the drug, but I'm not sure if I really need help, or if I'm just being a big baby. I feel like my anxiety is getting worse and worse, I probably have major panic attacks 3 or 4 times a week, but I don't know if I really need help for it. My mom is very stricked when it comes to health/mental health. She doesn't just take an exuse and leave it. I'm 13 years old, and I've felt like somthing has been wrong with me for a long time now. Someone please tell me, do I need help? Or am I just overreacting. Please tell me. "The rest is in the replies."
@whitemoonshadow37967 жыл бұрын
Another thing is, I'm horrible in public, if I don't have someone directly with me, I freak out, I can bearly talk on the phone with people, I have a small panic attack everytime someone looks at me, I don't have any friends, and half my family is extremely aggressive which triggers the majority of my panic attacks. I really don't know what to do.... I have two dogs, but one my brother completely hogs, and the dog that I like to be with is addicted to my step-dad. Please give me answers.

People can support you though, so talk about it and make them understand it. Only you can get yourself out of it. Nothing will change if you don't change. Start slow and don't give up, its okay to cry, by all means cry your heart out. You can get through it man

A few states (unsure of which ones, but I do know there are some) have laws that allow cats as service animals, but they're not covered by federal law, just like SDiTs aren't, so whether they're allowed in public varies by state.

How is that funny? Horses can do mobility work far better than any dog, it's really bad for dogs even when done properly. He does have a few behaviours to work on like getting distracted by dogs, birds and begging for food, but other than that his behaviour is perfect. calling a dog equipment is sad and pathetic and really shouldnt be done. Even people with service dogs would not say their dog is equipment.
@HappyTailsAnimals8 жыл бұрын
+animal lover when it comes to people distracting the dog and putting the person in life threatening danger, yes they would call their dog medical equipment. That dog is the difference between life and death. That title is not demeaning, it gives them even more importance.
@fr96038 жыл бұрын
Technically, according to the ADA, a service dog is medical *equipment*. Meaning, it's just like a wheelchair, cane, or air tank. Any service dog handler would call it equipment because it actually is. Of course, when it's not working, it is a pet. Pets are welcome to be free and be pet by anyone. Service dogs are equipment for one person, mainly meaning that most people are not allowed to pet it.
@animallover3408 жыл бұрын
+Happy Tails only in an emergency and last resort would they say that. these dogs are not equipment they are companions and if you cant love them as a companion you should noy have one
@fr96038 жыл бұрын
Do you own a service dog? I do, so I think I'd know. If you read the ADA laws, you'd know.
@HappyTailsAnimals8 жыл бұрын
Service dogs are not companions, they are working dogs that are tasked trained. If you think they are companions then you do not understand what they are for. Yes people do call their service dogs medical equipment because that gives them their legal rights. Service dog handlers love their dogs and its very offensive for you to imply that they don't. My service dog is my independence and I love him so much, I have a connection with him that you will never experience with your pet.

If the dog is trained to perform a task, then yes. But if the task is just sitting with you so you can pet him, then no. He needs to actually do something for the panic attacks. About 20 minutes later we walked by them again and her dog, of course, went nuts again and she started yelling at me for going near her and distracting him. like huh? Are people really that dumb? My puppy did so well through all of this, I praised her like she was a god for keeping her focus LOL.

I have a border collie puppy that’s VERY stubborn. I always knew inside that there was something wrong with me. I always had weird flashbacks that never happened to me, like I was an Egyptian writing ancient scripts on a wall, or a flashback of a turquoise grayish fence, splattered with blood ( I know, creepy). I also always got nervous and scared especially when I went an hour or two away from my house. I even would get nervous to walk alone in Walmart! I was also depressed, thinking of what would happen when I commit suicide, and always thinking of the worst parts of my life. I took MANY online quizzes for PTSD, depression, and anxiety, and they always came up with positive. I have that type of parent that if I confess they’ll judge me and say all I want is attention and a service dog, which is why I keep it to myself. I’m hoping this video will help me train my puppy, and maybe get an answer if I truly needs a service dog or not. So if anybody that’s a professional out there, I’m all ears!

You need to see a doctor. Videos online are not going to give you the help you need. Please talk to someone

I had a very terrible psychologist who dismissed all of what I told him, and told me I’m lying. He barely remembered any of what I told him, or misinterpreted what he did hear. He said I don’t have any of what I said because it doesn’t look like I do. I have been going to sessions for months and begging for him to help me get a service animal and he said I am just a hormonal female and I don’t need one. I have never felt comfortable around him, and I believe he is being unfair with how easily he dismissed my mental disabilities just because he cannot see them when I am in the office. I have been like this since I was very young, about 10 to 11. My parents don’t believe in mental disabilities very much and I had a little sister with ADHD, so they only took her to a doctor and therapist and such. I had to wait until I was 19 to go to a mental health professional because they never really did. I have been trying to get a service dog for my anxiety and depression, which keeps me from leaving my house and interacting with others. It includes anxiety attacks and barely eating/drinking and several other symptoms that just make life so difficult to live. How should I go about this? Should I go to a different psychologist or try a different approach? I truly believe a service dog will give me a sense of purpose and facilitate daily tasks for me.

I am mostly undiagnosed but I have hallucinations and diagnosed with tics, but my tics cause full body tremors, falls, and episodes of me hitting myself or hitting my head or body on objects with full force. I can’t be left alone anymore and I desperately need a service dog in order to gain a slight bit of freedom again but tics alone doesn’t qualify as a disability even though I can’t drive, work, and I can’t even bathe myself half the time. A service dog can’t help me preform these tasks but I would be able to sit in my room alone or go out in public without risking my safety. Idk what to do anymore, if anyone has information that could help pls lmk
