A “drink” command is really useful for dogs that get too focused on their work or are in stressful situations and won’t stop to drink on their own. Several of my sport dog friends use it.

Mine just opens her mouth and gets my attention. Then I ask if she's thirsty and she paws if so and I pull out her water bottle thing. But she learned the mouth thing from my last service dog, who just started doing it.

I do some competitive obedience my German shepherd mainly heeling to music. I also train personal protection and police dogs as a side job. I have a 5yo chihuahua mix who isn't terribly clever, but she's so sweet and tries so hard. We've only attempted a handful of commands -- sit as a proof of concept, stay + release to keep her from jumping us when we get her dinner, wait + ok go to stop her from dragging us down the stairs when we walk her -- but it's so rewarding to see her slowly learning, and how much she wants to please, and how proud she is of her successes.

Thanks for making this video. I'm fully disabled with migraines and anxiety. Now assessing a puppy for service dog training. So, your video is crucial to someone like me. Thank you! 🥰

Some basic training helps reestablish the bond. I am now training my 3rd SD. There are times when my dog is not getting whatever task training, I am working on. This requires taking a step back to where he is successful. Jen and Buddy are going back to the very basic that is quick and easy and low stress that Jen needs.🐈‍⬛🐾👍Keep in mind that the team develops their own language for commands. Many of the commands with my dogs I don't even realize but they get it.

I'm so happy that you are able to retrain Buddy. I know lots of handlers who can't retrain their dogs because they are geting too old. At least they can't do as much as before Covid. Some of the dogs have even become pets during these two years. So there are a lot of handlers that need a new dog now. So it's so good to see you and Buddy working together. I love your list. I know this is an old video, but I still wanted to comment and thank you for putting it out. My Service Dog needs retraining as he was certified just before lockdown in Ontario, Canada. I've since moved back to my home province of Nova Scotia and since then he's regressed more and has become very anxious, especially in the car. He's still great when were in public, he behaves and listens, but like you said, it's good to get them retrained. I'm hoping by doing some of this, he'll get some much needed confidence back, and his anxiety will leave.

I do a "follow" or a "lead" command for super tight spaces, depending on if my service dog is helping me walk or not. She adjusts to tight spaces on her own, but I do have a hand signal that is my hand about mid way up and just drops straight down to touch my leg. Or "step" when I'm about to step in to her space between her front and back paws to squeeze in tight.

Do you have any advice for working from home? We are back to virtual learnings and I start online school on Monday. My SDiT is a completely different dog at home vs in public but now most things that would be in public like going to work and school are at home again as Ontario has gone back into lockdown. My SDiT is having a hard time understanding that I’m working or in school vs just ignoring her requests to play. She is still talking when needed but seems very frustrated, refuses to play on her own an just resorts to napping which results in her being extra annoying the second I’m done. Currently I try and take her on a walk beforehand and play a bit in the morning.

The trick is to teach puppy to pee on command, and give plenty of opportunities to go. I give Buddy a chance to potty at home when we are loading into the car, and sometimes again on a tree outside the store before we go in (but not close to the door because who wants pee there, ew). I have a general feel for his patterns by now. Hope that helps!

14:50 In case this is help. You are normally very detail oriented so not trying to offend just noticed something that you might want to know to clean up training because extra eyes sometimes is help) You close the last little distance with Buddy when you ask for closer. Not a big deal but sometimes those things we do with out even noticing can mean we struggle with why the animal is not quite doing what is asked. I thought I would point it out just in case it is not something you noticed you were doing.

Yes, definitely aware on that shot, if you're being super picky. Buddy does usually at least wipe his drool on my leg when I ask for Close 😄 But do keep in mind that I use the feeling under my feet for balance, because the vestibular system in my ears does not work. The way I swayed away from him then back toward him to get my balance back and "ground" my feet after a big side-step is normal for me (especially with my top-heavy belly throwing me off now). You can tell that the foot closest to Buddy started to lift off the ground first, and then fell back into standing position, and this problem with tipping is why I work him with a counterbalance handle.

The first 4 minutes talks about some of the biggest reasons having a service dog could end up being g a huge pain in the butt. Every person should k ow the dark side of having a SD. The dark side of having one isn't always enough to decide not to get one, but I can see now why some ppl may choose to forego the whole thing. As she mentioned, constart training and retraining is a resource draining endeavor. You will have to pay with time, energy, and mental energy/focus and in some cases getting a dog from an agency has its advantages because some agencies will offer retraining for you. Every situation is different and if getting a dog and then keeping a SD doesn't work out for you, try your best to not feel like a failure or bad about it as if there is something wrong with you. Life changes and those with disabilities need to be gentle with themselves re ALL their limitations.

Bigger dogs preferably. Labs goldens reach out to programs or charities and ask for recommendations

So we do something funny instead of saying place we say lava shark because the floor is lava and there is sharks on the lava so you need to get onto wherever I pointed. Also, instead of close, I say tight heel

The only requirement to be a service animal is that the dog be individually trained to benefit the person with a disability. So the legal training is yep he is me service dog. From ca., wa. state laws

Can you please just talk about the dogs and not your babies or hair? Sorry to sound rude. I struggle with adhd and I struggle to watch the video completely. I got distracted from now writing this comment. I also don't care about your personal life, no offense. Sorry I think this is rude but not sure. I have aspbergers too. sorry

Hi! I appreciate your honest feedback, and that you shared you have aspergers so I can understand where you're coming from! My channel is about my journey, not about dog training, so I won't be changing my videos. I think if you're looking for something more direct, my channel is not a good match. I hope you find what you're looking for! And if you stick around, welcome!

thats actually a big misconception. Working on basic skills like this or what i tend to refer to as "Manners" keeps the foundation that every thing else is built upon strong. It's not enough to even take you dog on a mile or two mile walk every day, they need mental stimulation too. I have known of some handlers that play food games at feeding like like covering 3 different food dishes and the dog will put their paw on the one with the food in it to get it. This practices a few things in a fun way, scent skills (great for medical SD's) , understanding they must task in some form to receive food (increases trust and attention to the handler) and the fun aspect makes the bond stronger. Just last night I was taking my SD on a walk (Which is already a big deal since I am visually impaired and part time wheel chair user) , and my dog uncharacheristically refused to cross a bridge. (normally shell be a little shy to start but once shes on the bridge she trot along happily ) she sat down and refused to continue walking until we turned around and went back. In that moment I did not attempt to force her to continue or even correct her. I trusted that she sensed or saw something that made her feel unsafe and did obedient disobedience to do her biggest job, keeping me safe. I simply told her "Okay, I trust you. " turned around and when I did she immediately went back into guide work. I've seen enough movies to know what happens when you ignore the animals instincts, and it was really dark out after sunset on a hiking trail, so I absolutely trusted her instinct.
