Hey everyone!! Due to some errors in the editing process, this video exported MUCH darker than I intended so if you'd prefer a brighter version, I've uploaded it (unlisted) here. The video is the exact same - just a smidge brighter: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6K6aZyLf7OkiLc Apologies for how dark this one turned out! It looked fine to me in the preview when I was exporting, but I didn't notice how dark it got in certain parts until it was fully uploaded so by then it was too late haha. Since KZbin doesn't take kindly to videos getting deleted/reposted, I'm leaving this version up for now. Enjoy the brighter version if you watch it!! As always thanks for your support and feedback

That’s totally fair! I appreciate the feedback haha. Honestly the video wasn’t meant to be this dark - I added a filter to make the colours look better but it somehow exported a LOT darker than it looked in the preview and I didn’t notice until it was uploaded and too late 😩 as I mentioned in another comment, if there’s enough interest I may upload a lighter version on my website. It’s just KZbin hates reuploads so I’m leaving this version up for now. Hope it was helpful to you otherwise though!!

As an American living in Europe for over 10 years, I pretty much recommend my visitors the same things. I pack similar for myself when I travel around European cities in the winter. I like having a colored jacket so my family/group can find me in a dark crowd. 3/4 of people here wear black jackets.

As I live in the UK I’ve taken winter breaks in cold European cities many times. The other things to consider are if you don’t want to look like you are on a hiking trip in waterproofs and walking boots. Plus you are best, in my opinion, combining your insulation and outer layers in one coat so you can easily remove it indoors when you go into a warm cafe. I wear: merino long johns (leggings) under jeans or trousers. Thermal socks under lace up leather boots. Merino/thermal long sleeve top. Roll neck chunky jumper/sweater. Ginormous, insulated and water-resistant parka which looks like a sleeping bag with a hood. Scarf, warm gloves, hat. Put 1 or 2 USB charged hand warmers in your pockets. Cross body bag that will do day to night, packed in hand luggage with small rucksack as personal item. Good to go.

Thanks for a great video and I agree with all your tips and tricks. Fabric is the most important consideration in keeping you warm in winter. Merino wool or cashmere is fabulous, and yes, it is magic. Limiting the number of clothes you bring is also important in keeping your bag light. You did a great job on setting out what and how much clothing you need for a week of travel but didn’t really cover longer trips. I regularly travel for 1-2 months at a time and you don’t need much more than what you mentioned. I would probably add another bottom and one more top, maybe a nice blouse for dinners out. I limit shoes to 3 pairs (snow boots, runners and flats for hotel dinners etc and they double as slippers). A swimsuit for hot tubs and a pair of sunglasses are always essential, even in winter. The other thing you didn’t mention is sink washing. I sink wash my underwear, thermals, tops and even jeans sometimes when I travel. My husband and I use laundrettes every week when travelling but sink washing is easy and everything dries overnight on the heated towel rails in most hotels in Europe. Again, thanks for a great video.

I have a pair of silk thermal leggings. They are super thin but surprisingly warm (considering how thin, but don't compare to merino warmth). I sub these with my merino thermal leggings - try to wear on milder days. And of course, they dry super fast. I also have some bamboo thermals but find these less warm. Comfortable but more like comfy PJs than thermals - work well for moisture wicking and temperature balance but not so much for maintaining body heat. I'd recommend for shoulder season PJs + extra layer if needed. Sometimes I even wear the undershirt as a blouse cos I like the colour and it has a soft sheen that looks nice

I’m someone who can not stand the feel of merino wool against my skin (doesn’t matter what top brand it is) so I wear the Uniqlo Heatech range you mentioned for that layer on the skin, love them, and always so affordable. You may also like bamboo base layers (although I find these less effective for warmth. Silk is a similar but $$ option). I also find merino a little (or a lot) scratchy but I found a hack where you soak it in vinegar and water 1:1 (instead of fabric softener, after washing) and don't rinse (just dry). Even with rewashing during a long trip I found this was enough to keep me comfortable
@megand175
@megand175 3 ай бұрын
@@susie9893 Thanks Susie, 1:1 ratio seems strong and leaving it in, strange, but I’m willing to try! How long do you find you can go before having to do this again? Or is the once enough?
@susie9893
@susie9893 3 ай бұрын
@@megand175 ok, so the website where I read that tip suggested soaking 20-30 mins but I left it a few hours. Then I read another website that suggested putting them in the freezer for 24 hours, so once they were dry (dried naturally, not sure if that makes a difference but I've seen it suggested) I put them in a Ziploc bag in the freezer for that long. Between both those treatments I was ok for an entire 7 weeks away, with hand washing them with hypo-allergenic laundry sheets every 4-5? days while away (sometimes more frequent). So definitely worth a try imo (but if you're super sensitive you'd probably want to test that this works for you before heading out). Good luck 👍
@susie9893
@susie9893 3 ай бұрын
@@megand175 oh, not sure if I was clear - you thoroughly rinse out whatever washing liquid you use to wash them before you dip them in the vinegar solution. You just don't rinse out the vinegar solution. Does that make more sense??

Merino wool is the key to traveling anywhere in any season. Even for city visits to Europe, wear hiking shoes. You will do many miles (kilometers) per day on cobblestones. Bonus is that your ready for an actual hike of which there are many in Europe. We travel for a month at a time in Europe with just a carry on sized backpack and we are in our 70's.

I agree with 2 bottoms but I do pleather pants + leggings (or possibly jeggings). Then I like a sweater dress, a shirt dress, and a long jumper (basically I want to at least cover my hips + butt). And of course the thermals + outerwear you suggest (although I take a puffer jacket, not just vest). Accessorise with scarves + hats (this is where I lash out a bit - I have an infinity scarf with a hidden pocket that comes on most of my trips + a blanket scarf + a merino Buff + a beanie [cos I like to wear this for sleeping] and a dressier hat)

I have watched MANY, MANY packing videos and yours is the first that actually works and is practical. Your list and # of clothing items is perfectly spot on from my own past experience. Btw, RFID security in your wallet/purse is VERY important! Thank you! Great job!

Please invest a couple of hundreds dollars into high-end walking boots (Wanderstiefel) - they'll maintain your feet warm and last for a liffetime. Europeans strictly follow the "onion principle" of wearing different layers of functional clothing to take off if needed I LOVE this channel, please subscribe!

@@HappytoWander Yes, I actually do. My most favorite brand to go for is the Swiss based company "Mammut". Currently, I'm owning two pairs of their boots, one of them having a guaranteed insulation until -20c. This is my fifth comment to your video, every one of of them got deleted for whatever reason....

This video was helpful on the clothing side of things, but it would’ve been nice to show packing makeup and lotions (both and face) etc with everything. Is there a link where you show what you travel with?

Just remember that winter can be very drying in severe cold so you may need heavier duty moisturisers than you're used to

This sounded like a really great video with lots of good advice. Unfortunately it was so dark I could make out very little of what you were showing: black items against a dark sofa in a poorly lit room with lots of shadows. I like Uniqlo as well but I found their packable puffer had too many areas with no down in them so not warm enough for me, I traded up to a Land's End puffer jacket.

Great info however, did I miss you packing additional footwear, as I only noticed the heavy boots shown which you were wearing to the Airport? Also, your lighting and furniture is far too dark for videos for viewers - extremely difficult to see you or items being discussed!illustrated!

Extra pair of shoes not necessary. I did 7 weeks in Canada last winter and took snow boots + a pair of foldable ballet flats for dressier occasions, wandering hotels, but mostly cos I was staying with family over Xmas and knew I'd want some indoor shoes. But if I was doing a week-10 days I'd just stick to the boots (unless I knew I'd have to dress up for something) and add in some bed socks

I usually just travel with the one pair of boots I show in the video if I’m packing light but there’s definitely room to bring a second lighter pair if you pack efficiently! :)

Thanks for sharing. I am confused you didn't pack any additional shoes so I am assuming you only brought the shoes you were wearing? I am trying to master packing for 18 days to Europe in the winter going all over including a Christmas Market River Cruise. Also I workout so I need to pack my workout clothes and gym shoes too. Trying to figure out how to compress a winter jacket. This is Ed's wife Alisha.

I think the key is to be realistic. Are you going to need to work out if you're out sightseeing on foot throughout the day, then doing Christmas markets in the evening? I recently did Canada in the winter and did heaps of walking, hiking, snow-shoeing. I took a pair of snowboots and some foldable ballet flats for dressier occasions or wandering in hotels. It was plenty. (And despite Christmas treats I lost weight on the trip). Although I did take resistance bands and did mini workouts here and there in hotel room. Edit: ah, just read your post again. You're doing a river cruise. Not nearly so active as backpacking 🤔 Have you considered barefoot runners? Or maybe you could do weight training on board instead of treadmill?

@@lbunnygordon1133 You are welcome. If you think the sweater is difficult to get off, a merino cardigan works better and perfect to throw on over your t-shirts. At least it would be something I would do. And on top of that, a light puffer or vest which are also compact and warm

For those who'd prefer a brighter version, I uploaded one here (unlisted) since KZbin doesn't take kindly to deleting/reuploading. That’s awesome!! This is definitely a generous amount for a week haha (and I would basically do this for 2, 3+ weeks too except with laundry breaks), but I know some people hate rewearing things too much or feel like they need options. I’m glad you’ve found a minimalist strategy that works for you though! :)
