Surviving in Himalaya 🇳🇵

■ HIMALAYA, KYANJIN GUMPA: Surviving the brutal conditions of the Himalayan mountains is no joke. But the many peoples that call these mountains home; Sherpas, Tamangs and Tibetans just to name a few, have adapted fairly well. The ox looking animal known as the Yak is key to their adaption.
Yak bulls and cows gives these mountain dwelling people milk, fur, meat, insulation, cement and also fuel! Yes, you heard right. Yak dung is used as fire-wood; fueling stoves and warm meals in communities living way above the tree-line.
Kyanjin Gumpa, which sits at 4000m above sea level at the end of Nepal's Langtang valley, actually do have a little forest growing on a mountain nearby. Exactly how, given that the mountainside the town is built on is completely treeless, I never got a proper answer to. I did notice some small streams coming down the mountain the forest grows on though, meaning it's probably perpetually naturally irrigated.
The people living in Kyanjin Gumpa hence don't have to solely rely on Yak dung for all their heat and cooking needs. But they do use it to supplement their fires, which regardless of which fuel is being burnt, are incredibly labor intensive to maintain.
Just how labor intensive exactly? Well you be the judge as I become a Himalayan Yak Dung Hunter for a day.... 😎

In places of the world where soils are too hard to dig graves, people use rock piles to bury their dead.

Hi baldr The stacked stones, a common sight in the mountains, tell us tales of previous travellers who have been to that place. Often stacked stones that are seen on mountain passes are covered with prayer flags. These cairns are revered objects, as it is believed they help to please the natural spirits/deities. These stacked stones with prayer flags are known as “la btsas.” Here the word la means mountain pass, and btsas likely refer to a tax paid when going to a sacred place. The practice started long back, when travellers and traders in ancient times made arduous journeys across high mountain passes. Once a pass was reached after a tortuous trek, it was considered a major achievement. The travellers would then collect stones, make a stack, and place some food item on it as an offering.

The stacked stones (cairns) actually have a different meaning all over the world. Eskimos think it’s for good luck for the reindeer hunt, Buddhists use them as something sacred and in the western part the stacks are used as navigation aids. They are even used to bury urns of deceased persons.

Idk you can see it that way .but they only work for themselves .There is no abstract task ordered by boss on a timeline there . Nature is their boss . I don't think they feel like it's work . It's just rougher but our lives are definitely more difficult.

@@AK-hi7mg I have to disagree. Every job I’ve had I was working for Me. Some of those years I worked at self employed. But even when I worked for the Corporate world, I worked for “Me”. It’s all how you approach it. My life’s easy compared to what they do. But that’s ok. I can speak for me and people I know. Maybe yours is more difficult.

Are you blind to how so many people in your immediate surroundings live? There are people right next to you who have a much harder life than this. Even our own countryside people lived not too long ago like this. Some still do by choice. Being shocked because using fire to cook and heat takes fuel is a bit funny to me, knowing my grandmother chopped wood every day for months even in her seventies and eighties to have enough to get through the winter with heating only one room, the live in kitchen. I partly grew up with my grandparents which is why I know this way of life is normal even to Westerners, no mountains needed. I find it a bit dangerous to turn a blind eye on the people next to you and then enjoy watching people far away being so brave to have a hotel and use fire to heat and cook. I do not really get this romanticizing the supposed poverty of people in other countries. If everyone around you is living like this, you are happy. They do not watch other people far away living a different life. Which is why they are happy with their own. Besides, the woman picking up dung is rich. Do you own a hotel? I do not and will never, because I do not have the money to build one. Being able to put things into relation and walk through life and i mean real life, with open eyes is a blessing. Or is it a curse? Do you never see people around you smile? Or do you think it is so disgusting to use dung that they should rather cry in your opinion? Are the people around you not beautiful and kind? I really do not understand your way of talking.

Just because you’re a miserable individual doesn’t mean everyone else is. You know nothing of me or where I’m from or how I live or how my circle of friends are. Life is what you want it to be and how you make it. You either smile everyday and enjoy what you’ve got or run around and criticize someone else’s life style and how the person sees others. I see these folks as happy individuals that work hard and are happy for what they’ve got. If you see it differently that’s fine too. As I said before. Go enjoy what you’ve got. You might actually see yourself as a driver deferent person.

You managed to genuinely approach and conquer the wild and steep mountain track towards, where else, the top ofc where you belong , offering us a demostration of the real Spartan's life and routine on these Himalaya slopes. Spartans also loved yak milk tea. The Pantheon that you found on your road has been duilt as a Foreshadowing, not right after a war, it is pre-dedicated to your bravery for making it all the way up without any panther or bear ripping off any of your well-shaped ears. After the latest National Assembly in Greece we decided to get you crowned as 'Haraldios The Great'. Alexander unfortunately didn;t manage to reach so far in East, among others he had a horse and servants feeding and hydrating him, the cheater. Hej Harald, I am from around the Annapurna region and right now watching from Danmark. Those stones on the top of the mountains you were asking about are significant to small Buddhist Stupas, as you by now know that most people in Nepal from the Himalayas are Buddhist. They make those stone stupas for healthy life, safe journey and further more.

Harald my friend I was born and brought up in the western part of Tibet near Mount Kailash and the height of my Village is almost 4600 meters (exact Elevation is around 4575 meters). Congratulations that you came along so far at this heights above 4400 meters. I walked also several times to the mount Everest base camp from North side (Tibet) with the height of above 5500 meters and also from Nepal side, the south base camp with around 5360 meters…. I can still feel it…

The stones piled with prayer flags are also for prayers. The wind blowing through carries the prayers. The rocks are carved with mantras, also prayers. People walk around the structures as a prayer also. Tibetan people are very spiritual.
