It takes westerners to make such videos, so that Indians can appreciate our own country. The spirit of the people in the mountains is admirable. My heart went out to the 6 year old who walked for 2.5 hours in the snow. A big salute to Rakesh, who has to stay away from his family and take on such risky journey.

What's to appreciate about the backwards direction India takes consistently away from the common sense healthy happy life of the Grandparents. Shame on the Pride of Indians to blindly follow the blind Western materialistic mentality. Sure India is lame technologically but the West is blind spiritually. Together works okay... The blind carries the lame and gets direction from the sight of the lame, where the lame benefits from being carried ..... Think it over. Hare Krishna

In the first half of the 90s I spent three years serving as a UN military observer in Kashmir and Pamir. The spectacular nature of that region still means a great deal to me and so does the freindly and humble attitude from the peoples living in those remote mountain regions. They have my full respect and the pleasent memories will be cherished for the reminder of my life.

@@arturodesanturo1348 "Humble in the sense of law-abiding ..." . - I understand the comrade who asked a clarifying question. The author's phrase: - "humble attitude from the people", - is ambiguous to the point of danger misunderstanding. Maybe the author didn’t mean anything bad, but the translation into Russian turned out to be ambiguous. The word "humble" has not only the meaning of "kind" or generous, but also "submissive", "humiliated", "poor". . The English occupation of the country ended long ago - we must look for other words for these people who defended their independence - "proud", "independent", "free".

Even the people who live in Himachal can't afford to risk their lives by travelling on these roads .

Seriously though, Well Done to each and everyone for participating in and those involved in its making of this documentary. You are all incredible people. A big shout out to the monks for all their devotion to peace, prayers, and the happiness of others. Also the driver who risk life and limbs to deliver food supplies to that remote village and the parents with their little girl who walked the in the freezing snow on the final part of their arduous journey home. Those young boys whose joy was their freedom (at the end of a week of boarding school) to climb as fast as they could for two hour up a steep mountain side to home I solute you one and all.

Ten years ago I went to the Spiti valley, from Manali. Years before I was there to do the same but rainfall kept the road closed. It’s even more impressing then the road to Leh. Beside unbelievable nice walks, you can visit the oldest Buddhist temple in India. Also I stayed in a monestary on top of a mountain. There was no need for making reservations in any of the places I visited. Besides the giant scenery made me feel so very small it also made me feel to be on the top of the world. At places where rivers were just wildly crossing the road, the driver told us (I rented a 4x4 together with a Australian and French guy I met in Manali) to get out of the car and climb over the rocks upstream while he drove the car through the water. He did not want to risk our lives as well. A falling stone demolished the rear window of our Tata. And when it got really scary we played the new album of Daft Punk. Awesome trip. Don’t go there when you are short on travel days. Anything could happen.

There is hardly any difference between India and Pakistan either w.r,t. culture or language. I can easily understand your Urdu just like Hindi in India but my mother tongue in South India is Tamil, which you may not understand because that is an ancient language. But if you start eating food , visiting places even in Southern India you will find just like it is in your country. In India you have combination of wet and dry regions hot and cold and plain and hills all are contrasting. In another 10 years hopefully India and Pakistan will have free movement across the border and Europe will then look like a barbarian land Both countries will benefit tremendously. That is exactly what the West does not want to happen.

Most people couldnt drive for 15 minutes with that kind of stress without sleeping for a week after. I traveled on a road somewhat like this one in Yunnan, China. That road was paved and in better condition than the one in this video, but still dangerous. At one point, a large chunk of the road had fallen into the ravine [~300m below]. We had to get out of our bus, walk on the narrow part of the road that was remaining and board another vehicle on the other side. A bit of a hair-raising experience. This road in India is another level of danger however, and a lot longer trip than the one I was on.

In 1995 I did the bus trip from Gorokpur, India to Kathmandu & t remains one of the most spectacular journeys I have ever done. Stopping of frequent wheel changes you see crashed buses, trucks & cars all along the road which makes this a journey NOT for the nervous. As you climb into the lower Terai of the Himalaya you face arse tight hairpin bends & popping ears & finally you break over the plateau & decened into the beautiful Kathmandu valley. As the humble daughter of a British truck driver who frequently went with my dad on many trucking trips as a child, I never dreamed I would do such a journey, but am so glad I did. However during the same backpacking trip we were nearly killed in a bus crash in China on the Tibetan border in a head on mountain pass collision with a truck. Fortunatly we clamboured out with just cuts & bruises but I shudder to think how dfferent this could have been if our bus has fallen off the mountain into the abyss thousands of feet below. Yet oddly, 20 years later I would give anything to do these journeys again!

So, reminds me of our experience. We were supposed to take a jeep like the one in the video from Ghandruk to Manang during our Annapurna circuit trek. When we boarded the jeep, a Buddhist lady in her 60s sat next to me and before our journey began, she took out some uncooked rice grains coated with colors and said some prayers and sprinkled it on the dashboard of the jeep. I wondered why?! she then ate a chewing gum and offered me one. It was not very long into the journey, I realized why she said the prayers. Sometimes, I like how ignorant I was about the roads. No one in their sane mind would choose to go to Manang via those roads just for fun! surviving those roads and getting back to the mainland was one of the best experience of my life. Never again.
