He became agitated by the viewers screaming, at one point the boy was between his legs and they decided that sedating him would be too risky because he could have possibly fallen on the boy while he was groggy. This whole situation pissed me off. He didn't attack the boy and I really believe that if the crowd hadn't freaked him out he wouldn't have stood over the boy or moved him. If you watch the video you can see that he wasn't violent with the boy, he sat the boy up in the water to inspect him. Honestly, I think he would have mistaken the small child as one of his own. Gorillas don't attack unless they feel threatened in some way. A small hurt child would not be a threat. PS: I'm more angry at the mother than the zoo. Because although I know it's hard to keep track of small children sometimes, the mother should have been extra vigilant, especially knowing she was in a prison for wild dangerous animals. That's right, a prison, because that's how I see the sick practice of caging animals behind bars for all of their life so we pathetic humans can watch them. Once the child was in the enclosure the zoo's only option is to always kill the animal. Zoo animals are also more prone to depression so they can be unpredictable sometime. That's why this whole thing is a sick tragedy and why I'm so bloody pissed. This all could have been avoided, as often the case when humans are involved. Also: Alot of you are mistaking me saying he wasn't violent with the boy for he wasn't ruff with the boy. His a bloody gorilla, have you seen how they play with their young sometimes. The boy was injured so he wouldn't have been able to climb up on Harambee, nor know how to behave like a gorilla baby while he was with Harambee. He would pull the child away every time he would get freaked out by the crowd. That's why I'm pissed at the crowd for agitating him, because they were causing him to move the child frequently. To humans, this would be seen as him playing ruffly with the boy, but he was actually just panicked and constantly trying to move the boy away from what was making him scared.

The mother for not watching her child, the crowd for freaking out and the zoo for acting too quick. PS: if you watch the video all he did initially was sit the boy up in the water and inspect him. The child had injuries from the fall so it is very likely he was inspecting the child to see why the boy was whimpering. He wasn't playing with the boy.

Zoos really are one of the last real remnants of pre modern attractions that are insanely f*cked up when you realize what they really are. To me they’re borderline on the same level as the freak shows that used to be prominent all across the western world (probably eastern too, I just don’t have the knowledge to back up that claim) Obviously freak shows using humans makes them worse but to me putting animals through the same if not worse stress is also extremely evil. This is coming from someone who plans to be a biologist, which makes me very sad because I know that zookeeping is one of the easiest and most available jobs to get for biologists. This is something that definitely deserves to be boycotted.

I study animal management, and one thing we are learnt was that zoos were originally designed to help endangered animals so that they don't go extinct. Due to the government wanting more money so that the animals can have as nice homes as possible thay decided to open them up to people as attentions. This then lead to more and more animals being encaptuerd to satisfy the guests. Its horrible that something that was designed to help animals had turned into a place for entertainment for humans, just coz the government didn't want to pay to have them looked after without any profit. Moat of the people in my class are sad about this as some want to work in zoos but know the horrible back lash it gets. It's had to want to fulfil ur dream of caring for animals when u know its not the best for them. 😔

@Willham that isn’t what makes most animals happy, even humans aren’t happy if they’re fed and have all of their cares taken for but you don’t let them have freedom. Most carnivores enjoy the hunt, and having a big ape feed them big slabs of meat in their eternal enclosure isn’t at all resembling the hunt. All animals in general roam a giant distance throughout their lives. Elephants are able to remember thousands of km^2 of area and pass down that knowledge from generation to generation in their multi decade long lives. Grizzly bears travel thousands of kilometres in only a year. With modern technology and infrastructure we have ways of improving the system, but I think that national parks/nature preserves are the way to go. We just can’t have it become capitalized off of like zoos and aquariums have.

@Willham it’s not even about the number, it’s about the fact it is even happening. I grew up not far (in Canadian terms) from the Calgary zoo, and it’s attractions mainly consist of the bigger creatures. Atleast that’s where all the people were yelling and screaming. When I was last there I saw a tiger in a no joke apartment sized enclosure surrounded by people and it was rapidly pacing around. There are also pandas at the zoo and the adult female was in a warehouse looking room with a few bamboo chutes lying around. It was rolling around non stop, which I assume is because zoo animals are known to do very repetitive actions in order to psychologically stimulate themselves when locked in a small enclosure. I could link a video showing an example of this. Also, I wouldn’t believe your claim that zoo animals were sad without human interaction without some sort of link showing this
