Well I thought I would do an experiment to see if the Harbor Freight (aka Centech 69662 or now Jupiter 63429) 2000 watt inverter could live up to its rating and power the A/C system in my Class C RV. It is a 13,500 BTU system and the inverter (on its own packaging) can supposedly power a 15000 BTU AC system. Lets see if it can do it.....

It's not that it won't RUN it, ....it just won't START it. The juice required to start an AC compressor is far more than most inverters can handle. Running it like that, you'd have to have probably a 4000 watt running/ 8000 watt surge inverter, and loads of depth in your battery bank to handle the initial power draw. Probably minimum would be 3000 running/6000 surge.....but even that probably wouldn't handle it. Another way to solve this problem is to buy and install an Easy Start on your RV's AC unit. That will bring down the inital 41 Amp, (or higher, especially on older units) which is about 4000 plus watts, draw, down to under 20 Amps, which is around 2000 watts, which is what this inverter is rated for. This way you're never even coming close to your inverter's surge limit, thus causing much less wear and tear on it as well. And besides all that, I highly doubt that this inverter, for the price, is actually built to handle the watts that it says it is. Those are always OPTIMAL conditions, and absolute MAX performance. Most inverters I would say, can handle about 80% of what they're actually rated for. There's always power loss in every connection, the inverter itself actually uses power, and here, you have a really long cable length, plus a step up to 30 amp connection, etc, etc. It's not that it's a piece of crap, it's just more likely that your AC's initial surge demand is even more than the 4000 watt surge capability of the Inverter, and you don't have anywhere near the power supply depth needed to handle that much of a kick either. I just bought this inverter, and I have no doubt that this thing will easily run my new 13000 watt AC unit with an easy start installed, especially since I'm going to have an electrician help me wire it directly into the RV's electrical system.

Also found out that you're not supposed to run an AC unit, or fridge, or anything that uses an AC motor, on a modified sine wave inverter. That's what the Jupiter is, in case you're wondering. SO that is ONE thing that is their fault in terms of advertising....it may be ABLE to run it, (probably still not start it), but you shouldn't run an AC unit on it. It will work for a time, but, it most likely will damage the motor in the AC unit. It's actually one of the few things on the list of what NOT to run on a modified sine wave inverter. It could also be another reason why it didn't work.... I returned the thing immediately. Not because it's junk, it's just not the right tool for the job...

Just a little bit of experiance from several inverter systems ive installed: 1: Harbor freights old line of blue inverters seem much better than these news one, way heavier at least. I have a 2,000-4,000 watt modified sinewave version in a cabover camper that runs the microwave, 11k AC unit etc no issue. I can even run the AC and microwave at the same time, but i dont do that other than for testing purposes. I have probably 4-5hrs of AC run time on that setup with no bad side effects and no noticeable funny noises or lack of RPM (but i have seen that on other modified sine wave inverters). 2: I have run 13.5k AC units on 3000watt inverters no problem. One system i installed was a 220v/50amp RV with 3 AC units. I used 2 Victron multiplus 3k watt inverters. each inverter fed 1 leg of the 220v system, this means one inverter is stuff running 2 AC units while the other only has 1. Both inverters/AC units started the 13.5k AC units no issue. The one system with the addition 11K AC unit would run both AC units, but would trip overload if the big AC unit compressor cycled back on while the 11k compressor was running. Running both ACs off one inverter was a huge load, i dont remember the exact numbers but it was somewhere around a 150amp continuous load on the 12v battery bank, plus an addition 80amp load from the second inverter if all 3 AC units ran at the same time. These are 2 great examples proving people who say "you need 6-8k watt inverter blah blah blah". No you dont, you need a good quality inverter, proper cables, and a big enough battery bank to support the surge.

Good thanks for your video, each ac connection max output is 1500 wattage no matter how big of an inverter you buy. That is just the way it is. So a 1500 wattage ac will not work do to start up wattage. I'd you want to use a inverter to run the ac you must buy a inverter with a separate connection block with 3 terminals and wire it straight to the ac. But do not forget about the start up load. Longer the wire the less power out put and bigger load on the inverter.

You will need a reserve of 3 times the running load to start an electric motor. I would also size an inverter to be rated at twice the running capacity of the highest draw component. So if you have an appliance that used 1500W, then get an inverter rated for 3000W continuous. This is for duty cycle, especially for a device like the A/C which will run for a long time.

The surge to start an AC compressor could be at least 2 times that listed as operating wattage. Also? I'd say you need at least six 12 volt batteries with a CCA of over 600 amps and a 4000/8000 watt inverter to start that compressor. The cable should be a 100 MCM. My experience talking. It's the sagging of the battery voltages that causes the alarm and shut.

I would be willing to bet that if you monitor the dc voltage input, the voltage will sag significantly, and that is the reason for test failure. It takes a STOUT battery, STOUT cables, and great connections to prevent that voltage sag. I would be willing to bet you would have much better results connected properly to a big battery bank or lithium battery bank. A soft start circuit on the air conditioner will also help.

Not sure but a lot of people plug into these inverters. I think the plug in sockets are probably just rated for 15 amps? My plans are to hard wire a female 30 amp rv plug next to my inverter., -then plug my shore power 30 amp into the hard wired plug. You also need 400 amp hours of batteries too, AC takes serious amperage’s, especially at start. I’m also looking into the soft start.

its the high inrush current the compressor requires to start it to get the largest size inverter you need to determine the LRA (locked Rotor Amps) on the compressor. to match to the inverter. another is getting a hard start kit for the compressor sold in HVAC supply houses, Amazon or ebay as it should give the compressor a boost when starting i would try that and maybe or maybe not it will work with the inverter as the max amps the inverter can handle should be labled on it and look at the LRA on the compressor.

I've been charging large RC batteries from my vehicle for awhile. I've noticed while idling, and pulling alot of current, the alternator can't deliver the power I need. If I put something on the pedal to make it run about 1500rpms, then there is plenty of power and the voltage on the battery doesn't drop. Idling and using an inverter is fine, but trying to pull alot of current isn't going to work well while idling. I think those things are under rated which is one problem. The other is the initial start of the AC requires way more power. I've actually put a current meter on my house frig. It jumps to 18amps for half a second, then drops down to 0.5 amps while running. An AC system is the same type of setup. I think the initial start is whats killing it.

In assume that's what the guy was getting at because the inverter should handle 4000 peak Watts for this reason. And i think you said that backwards, those inverters are over rated, lol. Reality is he got what he paid for, a good quality true RMS inverter of the same rating would likely work a lot better but cost two three times more. I have the exact same unit in this video but i knew what i was getting. Mine runs everything i needed it to but I'd never expect it to pull a compressor of that size. But it runs my house fridge several lights and a large tv no problem.

@@ezridr1234 What I'm saying is with the car only idling, the alternator can't provide the power needed for the inverter to do 4000 watts, even if it was truly rated for 4000 watts. The alternator is a generation of power. At idle its turning too slow to provide its maximum output. I've noticed that simply going from idle to 1500rpms on the car allows a much greater output (alternator). I think if the test was redone but someone pushing the gas pedal a little past idle, it would have worked.

@@itspoffy I fully understood what you were saying, not sure why you felt you needed to re-emphasize it though. And turns out, i went and pulled mine out after seeing this and i don't have the exact same one as mine is a different brand, just looks exactly like it. But you know even with the alternator issue these things should put out what they're rated for without an alternator even connected. You have to remember, there alt is also raising the input volts likely to around 14.5 v give or take. I know one thing for certain, deep cell Marine battery makes one hell of a difference in performance of these things. I just know before buying one myself i done a lot of research and learned quickly there are two types of these made, i really wanted to purchase the better if the two but damn they're high dollar. I'm speaking about the ones that offer a true sine wave form rather than these cheap ones and that's what i was saying above. Harbor freight is nice to have around but you've got to think out what your buying there because they sell some really cheap bad crap. Buying a vice for the bench is one thing, but electronics? Have to be careful. I had one of the small bench grinders that just went out on me about a month ago after around 12 years of service, can't complain there but i have also busted a 5in vice in half after only owning for 2 days. After that i knew i could only use it for so much.

Most do not know this but you NEED a Low frequncy inverter, it's not about the watts so much as the ability to withstand that initial 3to 5 times the draw for 1/2 asec which no high frequency inverter will do under like 8000 watt one..I run my house swamp cooler from a 1500 watt LOW frequency inverter ll day long on a timer..the initial amp draw is about 65-75 amps and then down to 25-35...most solar places do not even mention that..The easy way to tell is if it weights less then 15 pounds for inverter it' a high frequency one and will NOT WORk

In addition to probably not being able to handle the the surge power for starting the compressor, the wires going to your inverter are probably too small. Those look like maybe 4 gauge; I'd say you want at least 2 gauge, probably 2/0. But most likely you're just expecting too much from that inverter.

As a minimum you will need a soft start circuit on the A/C. The inverter being so small, all other loads will need to be shut off during start. Also, I would only use a sine wave inverter on this type of inductive load otherwise you will decrease the life of the A/C motor. In summary, I would recommend a larger sine wave inverter and a soft start circuit to accomplish this task. It is not the fault of the inverter you are using.

Soft start staggers the voltage only turning on the compressor first and not the fan and other loads after the compressor has started as when it starts its peak draw is a fuck ton. It's operating voltage isn't so much tho so after its initial start it should then be able to power the fan and all the rest. It's already been done. Happy hunting and cool vid.

I was thinking about the exact set up and didn't think a modified sine wave inverter would work especially with an AC compressor. Now, to be sure I would have used shorter and well connected cables of the right size And I think you have the right size covered. Length and connection, not sure. My AC is only 5k btu also. So bottom line is that It could still make it on my RV. The battery also may not be able to sustain the peak demand and even if it did it wouldn't run you AC for long before it would die. One more thing, Idid't see the ground connected. That can make a big difference. In any case pure sine is always better. Especially on moving motors because of smoother rotation. Dilemma. Thanks for sharing your results.

You are trying to start an 13,500btu AC with a 2000w Modified Sin Wave inverter. BAD. The AC requires at least a 3000w Surge to start unless you add a hard starting cap to the AC. Plus this inverter is 85% efficient. You need a 3000w/4000w surge PURE SIN wave inverter. Ideally your inverter should be twice as powerful as the highest load it will be tasked with. IT AIN'T the INVERTER, it's not designed for this job.

Just thought I would let you know I ran the window A/C off of my Aims 2000 watts inverter charger for 9 hours today. It is possible , but the inverter has to be able to put out the rating. The A/C uses 644 watts running, and 1250 when the pump has to come on. To run an A/C it needs to be pure sine wave. One of those inverters like mine are $915 now. It is 24 volts, so less amps, runs cooler...But they will do the rating. You should have about 6 or 8 batteries to run the thing, all close to the inverter. A lot of inverters will not do but about half of their rating...it looks like you got one of those here. I feel sorry for people that keep buying these and trying to make them work. I bought a 12 volt 2000 watts Ampeak inverter about 2 weeks ago to run a sump pump from my pickup for when I go to get two barrels of spring water. I have made 3 trips with it, and working really well. The pump takes 350 - 400 watts. I haven't tried it on the A/C...it will probably run it, but that's just asking for trouble probably. In this video the back battery isn't helping...too far away. Yeah it's a whole other level to run an A/C very much off grid. I'm going to run mine about 9 hours again tomorrow. The batteries will charge hard in the morning for awhile then by 10 : 30 they will be going into float. I'm using 20 marine batteries that are hooked to the inverter by two sets of #2 welding cables.

If you had three batteries and a 10000w pure sine inverter and an easy start capacitor how long do you think you are going to run on that set up?? 2 hours maybe? So then say you run your RV to charge batteries? Just get you a generator. If you're going to run a motor may as well be a motor made to power an Air Conditioner.

he needs to look at the LRA (locked Rotor Amps) on the compressor as the LRA is higher than 15 amps plus the high inrush current as a hard start kit must be used depends on what compressor the unit has as to look the cover has to be pulled off the ac unit to read the label on the compressor. the BTU rating, Amps, type of refrigerant it uses on Copeland compressors will list the type of refrigerant oil but its the LRA rating to look for

How about an integrated appoach? A microprocessor that FIRST starts conventional generator and then the AC unit and then once running the inverter (An inverter with a GOOD system friendly sine wave!) that takes over and THEN the Genny is shut down .....run it to a low temp and then coast as long as possible then ? rinse and repeat ....the processor each cycle waits until the optimal timing ? What we NEED though I believe is much better battery tech! Batteries that can not only HOLD a charge long term but ALSO LAST many years! AND are relatively cheap to buy! THAT is what I keep hoping for! (wondering if latest Tesla techies true to their hype??) Then simply aquire the best available inverters and processors /battery combos that coordinate everything for maximum efficiency! Then? just finally sit back and RELAX even in the worst climactic events including wildfire "redflag" shut downs and hurricanes etc...ALL of it! ....ready to go full "off grid" at the drop of a hat!!

Actually the Jupiter 63429 may or may not be a "piece of crap". "Jack..." failed to do at least two things in preparation for his experiment. The first mistake Jack made was fail to understand the "load profile" of his A/C. This is complicated, so follow along if you wish. When I use the term load profile, I mean the power draw from a residential 120 Vac outlet as a function of time from the moment the A/C is turned "on" to say 1 minute. You will find that the power draw (and the current draw) will vary considerably, perhaps as much as a factor of 10X, over this 60 sec time frame. A Kill-a-Watt and your smart phone taking a video will work just fine. Record the power draw for 60 seconds, and then record the current draw for 60 seconds. The second mistake that Jack made was to fail to understand the specifications of his inverter. There are three things to take note of. First is whether the inverter a "pure sine wave" inverter or a "modified sine wave inverter". If it is NOT a pure sine wave inverter, it should NOT be used with and load that has a motor or sensitive electronics. Second, what is the period of time that the inverter can deliver its peak power. It can't be "forever" that's the continuous rating. I have seen this peak power time period to be a fraction of a second to several seconds. With the specs in hand, compare them to your video of the power draw of the A/C when plugged into a residential 120 Vac power outlet, I suspect that the peak power draw of the A/C lasts longer that the spec of the peak power capacity and time duration of the inverter. There is another bit of very esoteric info and it has to do with in-phase and out-of-phase current vs voltage. Another way to look at the issue is to talk about Power Factor, but that is best left for another day. Moral of the story: "crap" is in the eye of the beholder.
@JackofAllMasterofNone

Moral of the story is on the box it says it can power a 15,000btu AC unit and it cannot. Go to 35 seconds in the video and study the pic of the side of the box. Its false advertising. That was the only purpose of the video. Period
