You're right, "When you need something like this, you need it." I have a set of "name brand" ones that glow in the dark (not really that great) that I think I paid $60 or $80 for probably 15 years ago, and they've been great, but it would have hurt to leave one of those name brands in the attic. In contrast, like you, I'd leave one of these HFs sticks in the ceiling or wall if I couldn't get to it, and not worry about the $1 stick I lost. I do think the HFs sticks are a little bit more flimsy and brittle than my name brand ones, BUT at the price that quality difference is neither here nor there. HF has those similar short sticks, and those are nice to toss in my tool bag so I always have at least some fish stick handy in an emergency.

I used this set many times for video camera installs in drop ceiling. I assure you, it was time consuming to use this product. This product is great for reaching 5 or 10 feet. Because it flexes so much, it's very difficult covering more distance, especially if you're trying to fish the rod into cavities. Also consider that sometimes you have only 2 or 3 feet available in the drop ceiling, which doesn't allow you to manipulate the rods. If you're trying to have control of the rods and trying to insert it into holes that are more than 10 feet away, this will not work. You would need a "low flex" fish rod set, like the one sold by Klein Tools. I know, it's 10 times more expensive ($80 vs $8). If you're going to be in an attic sometimes with 120+ degree temperatures and walking through the rafters at snail speed, you're definitely want to get out of there as soon as possible. One way, is having the tools that can save you time and help you get the job done as quickly as possible.

thank you for your review; you made a very compelling cost argument. I need a fish stick to help install security camera's and under eve lights. After that, I cant imagine needing the tool ever again. I can buy a good 1/4" 16ft long tool from a Big Box for $39, probably not break it and never use it again and I'll feel bad about having to pay all that money. Or, I can spend $8 at Harbor Freight, get the job done and if I break a rod or 2 or 4, I'll be OK with that.

and that is why I bought 2 sets, if I broke (broke 1), or lost (lost 2) a more expensive set, I would be upset, but not with them, and like most specialized tools, I don't use them everyday - thanks for subscribing!
