The coated drill bit is probably 135 degrees while the high speed is 118. Drills come standard in both angles depending what you are drilling.

I saw a Russian guy using it successfully bending the head on the flutes on the drill. Very much different than the instructions. But it seems to work well

Do you see the Russian guy live? Or could you provide link for the video?

Anybody with sense would use a pilot hole for a half inch drill, anything over 1/4 inch really should use a pilot hole in metal.

The entire jig is backwards, it should feed from the Left and grind downward exposing a sharp cutting edge and then twist a relief angle.

It's just a simple grinding stone with guides, so this device does indeed work. For a really dull, abused, drill bit (such as yours), run it through a bench grinder first to get a rough edge. Work until both flukes (cutting edges) are equal in size with the tip sharp & centered. Same with this tool to get a fine edge. Don't use excessive force. You'll end up with an almost razor sharp drill bit.

Thanks Robin for the great tips.

The cutting edge you are talking about is called a "Flute" Fluke is an electrical/electronic instrument company.

with over 40 years experience sharpening Drill Bits & End Mills, the BEST ADVICE I could give Any & Everyone is to take an hour or two & learn how to sharpen by Hand using Premium "NORTON" low speed pink & white wheels & Shapness will Last unless someone intentional tries to destroy it. No Machine is capable nor can Compare to the quality work of a true Craftsman.

Thanks for the video! Harbor Freight is hit or miss! Kinda ironic that they even sell something like this... with their coupon you can get a whole set of drill bits for like $10!

And u can rebuy them 300 times. U get what u pay for with drill bits. Im poor, like really poor. And i absolutely hate spending the amount of money dewalt charges for bits, but the truth of the matter is u get bits that stay sharp for years of use, compared to the 10 to 20 dollar bits that u have to sharpen half way thru each drilm hole
@svdelhi Жыл бұрын
Good analysis done -- but you need to ensure 2-3 things with that sharpening attachment. First there should be no vibration- securely mount & fix tightly the drill machine & attachment on a metal or wooden frame. Secondly the grinding wheel must be of more fine grade abrasive- the more fine abrasive wheel is there- more sharp & accurate the drill bit will be. Best is you buy a sharpener with options of all angle adjustments & a much finer grit grinding wheel.

There should be a flat washer in a little clip on the other side of the rod that holds the Stone on. I bought the two pack kit from Amazon and it has clip in a washer on the sides
@JoediyLab2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill, mine did not come with washers

The sharpener evaluation would be more accurate if you 1) drilled the steel plate with the new drill bit to see if it can cut that steel plate, how much pressed pressure it took, long and how deep the new drill bit could penetrate the plate. The new drill bit should be the same material (titanium?) as the old drill bit. 2) after sharpening the old drill bit, test this drill bit on the same steel plate by drilling it at the same pressure on the drill as the test on the new drill bit; measure the time to drill and the depth that it cut through the steel plate, if it could cut the steel. Without applying the same pressure on both the new and old drill bits the tests may not be reliable.

For this size the speed should be lowered, you should use metal cutting drilling tool lubricant to reduce friction.

im returning mine tomorrow im not dealing with the harbor freight tool, its $5 dollars but if you use an expensive drill bit it will just round it off, good thing i used a cheap one for testing. good video i should have watched this before buying this stupid thing

I cut 2½" off of the handle so i can hold the drillbit and sharpener and allign or roll it with one hand and try to hold the drill and trigger switch with the other hand . It puts the edge and relief angle but hard to get a point .

Thanks nice modification
@gunfreak9mm3 жыл бұрын
It didn't work because you used it wrong. Don't round off the bit, grind the edge flat and it will sharpen well.

The length of the drill channel seems to be a bit too long, no pun intended. I have the same one and think it would be easier if I could spin it by the end of the drill bit. Im not a big fan of this sharpener.

I was a tool and cutter grinder for over 20 years. Owned my own business and worked in a few shops. This thing is completely useless. 😂 You're better off on a bench grinder. Spend a few more dollars and buy even the cheapest Drill Doctor and you will have much better luck I think.

Eric thanks for the expert advice, I really purchased the drill sharpener as a joke, but did a evaluation just to prove it. I do use a belt sander to grind my drill bits. I like that the belt parallel.
