@@lahypnotista7737 depending on the color and the gauge (thickness) of the metal, the price can be anywhere from .99 cent per linear foot up to $4 per linear foot. Judging from my experience though, the most common gauge used for the PBR panel is 26 gauge. And the most common color is "galvalume" (the silver/gray speckled color) used in the video. I have a similar set up. Instead of the frame kit, I used galvanized fence pipe and found connecting joints online. I was able to get the joints in the angles I needed. I also increased it from 4 legs/cross members to 7. This made it considerable stronger than the kit frame. It did cost a little more though.

Love the idea. Have 2 mods I would make to this since I live in heavy snow country: 1. Mount the roof panels the other way (vertically) to support snow sliding off. 2. Buy a 2nd $200 HF garage, cut the horizontal poles in the middle and install the vertical poles from the 2nd kit there. This should give the 3’ spacing you’ll need to attach the panels vertically while at the same time DOUBLING the weight it can support before the poles start to bend. Couldn’t buy wood to reinforce any cheaper than that. Since the roof panels will lose their rigidity mounted in this way I know I’ll need some sort of purlings to give rigidity to the panels so they don’t bow and pull the vertical poles toward each other. Thinking 1.5” conduit. One row about half way down the roofline on each side might do. Maybe two per side if I feel it needs it. Thanks for the vid - got my brain thinking
@carolguida454
@carolguida454 6 жыл бұрын
I made a structure similar to this - but I added 2/2s as purlins on the roof and attached to the metal rafters using galvanized 2 hole U shaped steel straps to hold them to the rafter pipes (screwed up from underneath). I screwed my roofing directly into the purlins and ran them vertically for rain drainage. This made the roof stronger for my climate. I also built one of these where I doubled up the frame , cutting the plate and ridge poles in half (people often get rid of their frames on Craigslist - just found one that was the same as mine and cut the pipes with my sawmill using the pipe studs and pipe rafters and connecters). Again, made the roof stronger for snow load.

using screw eyes on frame bolts allows x brace cables inside 3/4 conduit especially on end sections. Built green house with same frame. An alternative inside sheathing is FRP sheets or Diebond (thin layers of aluminum with Polypropylene core. Both cut with circular saw either lap and glue/screw or use a backer on seams and glue/screw to that. Both are water/vermin proof will add resistance to racking and if glue and screwed make a stress skin panel. Same with outer panels. Metal building catalogs have exterior trim, foam insulation strips, and simpson plates for mounting lights, roof vents, hinges for doors.

One thing that may important to some people. PBR panels are painted at the factory, after they are cut to size. The painting method is intended to provide protection from moisture. If you cut a panel, you cut that protection and will soon have rust. It is best not to cut them at all, but if you do, be sure that you follow the manufacturers instructions to reseal those edges.
@mikesrandomvideos

good point. especially in the rust belt. the salt can corrode those edges and creep under the Zinc coating.

Nice DIY work. I'm going to use and old 22 foot camping trailer. Strip the camper to the frame (it's crap anyway), new floor and then use walk-through scaffolding as the supports. You can buy the pipe fittings online for each corner and double them up to increase possible snow load. It being a trailer, the only restriction is 8 feet max width but it will never see the road. Having permanent trailer tags keeps code enforcement and DMV at bay and allows me to park it anywhere in my back yard. After a couple years in the sun, the factory panel coating may degrade and just buy some tint-able roll-on bed liner and seal it up good from the outside. Don't forget a wide lockable door insulation and ventilation. Best part is you can do it in stages.

I purchased a ten ft. by ten ft. Shelter logic shed. that has a frame with a cover over it. that is made from a material that is similar to that material tarps are made out of. and it was pretty good for about ten months. but now it is getting ripped apart by the wind. but the frame is still in very good condition. I have tried to figure out how to get a hold of the shelter logic company. but have had no luck but now after seeing this video. this is making me think about some different options. where I live the wind has become a real problem. it used to never be so windy here. but in about the last five years or so it has become windy almost all the time. I was thinking that I was going to have to take the shed down. but maybe I might possibly be able to do something with it after all. I rent so I can't really put up something permanent. but this video might afford me a way to put up something I can take back down if I have to. thanks for posting this I'm going see what I might be able to do.

I bought the 10x20 version of this canopy from harbor freight. after 2 years the tarp splits in half and there is no replacement canvass available. So to solve this problem I would buy a 10x20 tarp and tie it down. It looked horrible but it worked. never thought of this but hense , I probably would have just ordered a shed and paid monthly even for it or bought a carport thats bigger then that for a little more if I was going to do that. In my opinion the only way I would have invested 500 bucks into that frame is if the tin was free. All in all not a bad idea but I would not have done it , a new tarp once a year is 20.00 maybe 2 tarps in a bad storm season. That frame is not even made for that kind of weight .

If you make it just wide enough to get a vehicle into but would not be able to open the door you need to think outside the box and install a swing door where the door would open so you can open the wall to give yourself enough room to get in/out but then close it back up when not in use with a simple gate latch to keep it closed. When you are making it up as you go you are not limited to what a manufacture made as long as you have access to materials and tools to let you do what you can think up.

Great idea, thanks for sharing. Good thing I saved my old Costco 10' x 20' canopy tubing. It's approx. 2.250" Dia. heavy duty white powder coated thick wall tubing they don't make anymore. The tubing they make now for them is the size you have approx. 1.50" and thinner wall thickness also. Why didn't I think of that!? LOL

Nice looking shed! Hope it lasts for a long time for you! Those panels are very strong ive sold thousands and thousands of them! The framing however doesnt last too long here in Pennsylvania and new York are due to heavy wet snow! My sons collapsed the first big snow storm ! The poles gave out! I was thinking he shouldve filled the with cement!

Nice Build Mike, I own my home but garages cost so much to build. I need something for the wintertime so I don't need to be outside in the snow working on vehicles lol. I have permanent never damage. Thanks for the ideal can always make it bigger if need too. I hope the garage has worked out for you.

Okay, so if I understand what you described... You shortened the width from 10' to 8' wide to fit the concrete slab. Is that right? Great for farm and mowing equipment and vehicles being stored. But as a day to day garage car parking not so much because it's so narrow. Got it! 👍🏻🇺🇲 Thanks

Hah. About 2 moths ago i just did the same to make a new horse shelter. Took a pole tent i already had (i have atleast 20 frames worth of pipe and fittings) cut it down, took the scrap sheets they used to cover my roof panels in transit when i did my roof 2 years ago, and some plywood since its a horse, id rather she mess up wood then the metal and possibly slice herself severely. I bought a box of screws and some hat track for extra support/mounting locations. Was into it for about 150 bucks not including the cost of what i had laying around.

the panels are rolled in to shape. they pull the roll of metal through a series of rollers each creating a slight bend in the panel, that's how they can make any length, not stamped.

FYI, keep your eyes out for steel roofing after storms. Picked up a full roof with screws for $5 that I've used to skin my Hazard fraught carport since the tarp shredded. $40 in purlins and I have a snow rated roof!

Great job! I have one of the larger frames and have been thinking about doing this same thing. This is the very first I've ever seen. You done a great job putting it together. Yep my frame is from the tent type storage shed and I will be honest, it was ok But the tent fabric lasted only two years. The sun rotted the fabric in no time. So now after seeing your video I'm gonna do the same thing but when it comes the roof panels, I might ask the metle company if they can groove only one section of a sheet and leave the rest flat. That way I can have a smooth roof rain and snow run off. Again great job. Thanks for sharing. You now have a new subscriber.... Thumbs Up !

Goodolboy One no grooves/ribs equals no strength. Just add wood or metal purlins to the roof at 90° to the frame and install the metal parallel to the frame or opposite to what this Video shows. End result is rain and snow will run off. Could gutter it also! With the wood purlins the strength of the roof will increase dramatically!

So you're using those clamps because you cut off the crimped end of the pipe that would have fit into the peak pieces. 6" off each side. Is that right?

needs horizontal perlins out of hat channel , sheds water and snow better . it would make eaves posable and sealed outside corners . it would add to cost but also rigidity .

The only problem with the roof of it, is that the ribs are running the length of the building and if you have snow where you're at, that'll hold the weight of the snow on it and smash your roof in. My husband built pole barns for 30 years. He says you would be better to screw some one by fours at least one foot apart from the ridge to the eve then put the metal on the correct way. Then you can also put on a gutter each side and run them into a collection barrel if you're so allowed..?

Nice conversion to siding. I remember when I used to get several years out of these type of vinyl sided sheds but now the vinyls last a year at most and shred due to lack of good UV inhibitors and thin mils. Even the tubing and joints are thinner and flimsy. Setting one up on a concrete slab is the only way too go.

HF has a 10x20ft canopy kit that would be perfect. It's also $100 on sale right now. The cost is lower on these because it only comes with a tarp roof, not canvas walls like the 10x17 garage - which you won't use anyway, so why spend more money on a smaller kit? What is the limit for a wood garage, how many square feet? You can buy lumber to build a garage I believe it would be low cost. The hardest thing to build would be the Roof Angle, cutting boards at a angle.

It looks nice. I am thinking it won't stay that way, wind will shake it apart, and make a lot of noise while it happens, that is a problem with the steel buildings. Wood shed is sturdy and quiet.
@mikesrandomvideos

yea I get it but cant use wood to get a car to fit inside. Plus I used the rubber washer style screws so they wont back out. constantly holds pressure so the wind wont shake them apart.

@@mikesrandomvideos All the local rules around here (sacramento) say 120sf FLOOR AREA, so as long as the inside is 120sf, you can have a thicker wood wall. Another material choice is to use foam sandwhich walls, like a boat, but cheap foam and thin wood.

I have something like this and the tarp is failing after 2 years. Putting steel on it might be cheaper than a quality canvas for the roof. For snow load I just used rated cable for the rafters. Easier to do that, though conduit and fabrication would likely be cheaper.
