Ultrasonic cleaners work by cavitating the fluid against the item to be cleaned. The cavitation bubbles collapse and hit the surface with an intense burst of pressure. It's like little mini-explosions against the surface. It's mainly made for removing dirt and stuck-on debris, not for the oxidation layer on the metal. You need fluid that cavitates easily at the frequency that the vibrator imparts. Temperature is important, as well. Some fluids cavitate (and collapse) better within specific temperature ranges. This is why the manufacturer also sells the fluid they expect to be used in it. If you know your chemistry and physics, you could design your own custom fluid.

I'm just happy to be finding out what eats copper before I put an expensive brass part in there! More "testing" is coming - rust and grease removal!

Simply green. Try that. Or Dollar general have some all-purpose cleaner I don't know the name

Something I've seen people mention on other videos is that for smaller parts, you can fill the ultrasonic cleaner with water then put the parts in a mason jar with the cleaning solution in the Mason jar. That should save a lot of cleaning solution I'd imagine. Also then you could run different cleaning solutions in different jars without them interacting. It would also be useful for testing different solutions at the same time.
