Mayhaps not always, I don't fish for pike but I do fish for several species usually various bass, too slow of a retrieve is bad for hard lures especially but pausing the retrieve for a moment can get a lot of bites at times.fast retrieve, sudden pause, twitch the lure, fish on.

No action on such a slow retrieve, the fact that the bait didn't react to them was enough for them to know it was a trap. If you are pike fishing you typically have a faster retrieve forcing them to strike the bait before getting a good look at it.

I’ve never fished pike, only have chain pickerel in my area. Seems like they act very similar. I always try to retrieve just fast enough to keep a consistent natural motion in the swim bait. Sometimes a bit faster in warm weather when they’re extra hungry.

FYI. The reason fish WONT hit artificial like they would live is because the live have a scent! The best lure for fishing is anise oil if you can find it. It’s what’s in all the bass baits. IT DOES NOT TAKE MUCH!!! Or, fish oil, or whip up some chum and dunk ur lure in it after a few cast. ANYTHING that gives off a scent other than steel and plastic. Best fishes!
