Top bait tip. Use maize instead of corn. Prep it then store it in a bucket until it develops a clear slime. I use a bucket with a lid and can tell when it starts to ferment when the lid domes a bit. This will draw fish like crazy. You can tweak this prep method by using ruby maize to increase the sugar content. Or by adding bait flavours etc.

I study freshwater fish and I fish for carp. Corn is digestible for fish, however it might not appear that way since the kernels may not break down completely. This also happens in humans and it is completely harmless. Even if the kernel doesn’t break down, fish are able to pass it through their digestive track with little ease. Corn is also shown to increase the mass of fish when used as feed, so corn isn’t really a harmful bait for fish.

@AyingerSmasher
@AyingerSmasher Жыл бұрын
@@jaredgarza5624 you can use deer corn. Carp have pharyngeal teeth which help crush foods like mollusks, crustaceans, and seeds. Plus their stomach acid is strong enough to dissolve deer corn. Also, the corn won’t expand in their stomach since it doesn’t have enough water or time to inflate. I don’t use deer corn since it’s more convenient to buy canned corn, but there shouldn’t be any issues with using either. If I do use deer corn, I like to let it soak so you get bigger kernels for hair rigs.

Hello! I'm Brad and i have a degree in fisheries management from Auburn University. Corn feeding is VERY common in a lot of farm raised pond fish, as well as fine grain corn meal for fish prior to a certain size! The majority of the diet of the channel cats that i work with is, infact, corn based with some other things such as shrimp meal and fish meal mixed in for other dietary needs of the fish, usually all mixed together into small chunks or pellets. I know I'm late but i hope this helps!

As an ecologist, many of us think the rule is a little dumb. In certain conditions of trout fishing in other states like South dakota, there are some instances where it's illegal to have any "human food" bait even in your possession. Now nobody will call you on it, but technically you can get fined for something like having a snickers bar in your pocket in those cases. @@dimlylit3086 you refuse to believe that people are dumb enough to think that rice will swell up inside of a bird as if it were a living flying rice cooker? I remember hearing about people who would insist on using bird seed instead of rice because if you don't understand the tradition behind the rice, screw it use something else. Of course this was some years ago and back then people thought that day care centers were staffed by witches who regularly levitated in front of children and the whole nation was on the edge of its seat trying to locate the bat boy. In the UK, some fisheries don’t allow the use of corn because they say that the carp (and other species) dont digest 100% of the corn properly and therefor when whole pieces of corn pass through the digestive system and out the other end, other fish come along and pick up the non digested kernels which have the potential to spread a disease that the original fish may have been carrying. Beside the fact that this kind of makes a lot of sense, corn is an excellent bait.

In the UK, Carp or MudPigs as some of us refer to them, are worshipped with an almost cult like enthusiasm. They are pampered and cared for like pedigree race horses or beloved pets. As such, if anglers bait was likely to harm them, it would be banned in an instant here and yet Corn is an incredibly popular feed and hook bait, so you can take that as good evidence that it's harmless.

Take a handful and dunk it in water and work it in to a putty and use it on a treble hook 🪝😉 then you can keep the smaller fish off the bait. The carp will smash the bait in back of its mouth when it feels the hook it can't spit out the treble..works like a charm. ✌🐷👍

The reason why we cant digest the outside shells of kernels of corn is because theyre high in cellulose, which is something that the human digestive system cant digest. However, a study called "The gut microbiome and degradation enzyme activity of wild freshwater fishes influenced by their trophic levels" found cellulose digesting bacteria in the gut microbiome of certain herbivorous, omnivorous, and filter feeding fish. However, carnivorous fish had a much lower percentage of cellulose digesting bacteria on average which would likely cause the stories people have heard about corn clogging up the digestive tract of fish.
