To add my appreciation to the other comments: I cannot tell you how helpful this was. Our hard drive wasn't recognized by any computer and was making the same glitchy noise. Seagate tech support simply said the hard drive was out of warranty and could not help. Our local digital data retailer wouldn't touch it. I followed this tutorial and it came back to life like magic.

Dear John. Thank you for your comment. Please realise that this method is a bit of a last resort in the situation that the needle is stuck. (you can hear it). If your data is essentials there are professional data recovery experts who can do this in a clean room (without dust) with less risk. This method helped many but is not totally without the risk of failure. When the needle is unstuck you should be able to copy the data after closing the harddisk and putting the screws back.

Thanks for the amplified sound symptoms, which I recognised was consistent with my problem Seagate 1TB Backup Plus (with a USB3 connector/adapter to the concealed SATA and power) and an all black plastic case. Guessing it was the same stuck head, I decided not to dismantle at all, but by pinching the drive between finger and thumb across the large flat sides, and with the drive surface then positioned vertically, I just lightly tapped the long, thin, side edge of the drive on my knee a couple of times, and reconnected: Bingo! Not too sure if there is any corruption, but drive is now working normally, as far as I can tell.

Hi thank you so much for sharing this with us. I'm going to do this with mines. I have a question, what happens after you do all this fix. I need to build it up again? I've seen some videos saying you should not use it without assembling due to the dust risk damage. So what's next after this? Can build it up again? I need a SATA to USB cable? or I can still use normally the Seagate conection to mac? Thanks in advance!
@PatrickJacobs3 жыл бұрын
Easiest way is with a sata to usb connection but you can build it up again if you do not have it. My. advise is to make a backup immediately and then replace the disk with a new one or even with an SSD. The chance that the disk crashes again is too big to use it again. Even though the disk in the clip is still working actually. If you were careful (and quick) not much dust particles landed and there is a small dust filter in this disk if I remember correctly. At your own risk naturally but I never had any issues. On a sidenote I like your guitar playing on your channel. You should record more.

@@PatrickJacobs Thank you so much! Sure... I don't know lots of recovery data places here, so I'm gonna do it by myself, always liked "tech" stuff and I've fixed some other kind of devices. I have two BUP Slims from Seagate. Neither of them will read anymore because I slightly bumped them. I don't have the tools to open it and I tried following this guide to initialize it but I got a Fatal Hardware error. I'm at a loss. I do have a Warranty for one but I don't know how to use it and I'm worried I would just lose my data.
@PatrickJacobs3 жыл бұрын
Best go to your local data recovery center. To avoid risk of losing data. If you do not get the sound you hear in the beginning, then it is probably something else. Data recovery centers can transfer the spinning disk to other hardware and try to recover the data this way. Good luck with the recovery.

I have a seagate external hard drive slim that I've been using with my MacBook for about 2 years. One day I was uploading information from an iMac desktop. As the process was completing, the computer shut down. I restarted the computer but the external hard drive is no longer recognized. The external hard drive still spins and the light still comes on but the drive is not recognized on the screen. I attempted this with several mac computers as well as a PC. The PC can recognize the drive in it's administration tool but the file manager doesn't. I am unable to see the files on this drive on the mac or PC. Because it spins and the pc shows that it is functioning correctly, I attempted to clone the drive but that didn't help. I've also tried changing the sata adapter. this didn't work either. I'm looking at all of these videos about how to recover data from dead drives but I don't think my drive is dead because it's spinning. I've also tried cleaning the connections on the card. I don't know what else to do. can someone help.

same problem i haven't use it for 2 years because of this then the other day i tried to plug it again on my new laptop but it does not show on my computer but it did show on disk management, at first i thought it was just another space from my drivers because i was trying to make partitions but then the hard drive works accidentally, I was in shock and tried to do some recovery (used easeus) from my old files 'coz it was formatted, then when im recovering my files for about 5 hours it suddenly stopped and became unreadable again and my recovery is not complete :( I tried watching tons of videos on what to do, i tried doing things like in this video, but the head was not in the platter so i thought it's not the problem, i tried changing to sata adapter too but nothing happened, used my old laptop nothing happened, tried to bring it to a technician and she said "The drivers dead" but I'm still hoping that one day it will be resolve, because a lot of important files are in there. :( Hope one day there will be a solution to this problem. :)

Thank you. I have a 1 TB SEAGATE BACKUP PLUS EXTERNAL HDD . I use it by attaching it with my honor 7x mobile through OTG for data transfer (bothside). I purchased it 11 months back from flipkart. I use it max once or twice in a month. I used it with desktop 3 times only since purchased. Yesterday when i was working with in by attaching it my mobile , suddenly one beep sound came and HDD light turned off. I performed safe remove process from top bar and after few seconds , it showed that " its safe to remove now" . I removed it and reattached it with mobile but no light no detection. Then again i removed safely and attached it in Sony laptop. It showed new usb driver installation. After completion of the same , no pop up came , no light on HDD , no drive shown in my computer . Then I went to printer & devices and found that it is showing the HDD there but when I went to its properties ; there is blank in VOLOUME TAB . In GENERAL TAB it is showing " device type : disk drive ; manufacturer : standard disk drive ; Location : on USB mass storage device ; device status : this device is working properly " . Another msg shows " windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for safe removal but it has not been removed from the computer (code 47) . To fix the problem , unplug this device from your computer and then plug in again ". I unmounted safely it by right clicking . Then reattached the same . Result is still same. Then removed. Restarted the laptop , attached again... same results... pls advise

Please, is there anyway to save it still? It's got all my photos & memories on it...
