Can confirm, Florida weather sucks, especially if you live there. I've heard multiple frequencies, and ATC was pretty good

Tallahassee Approach was most helpful my last round trip from central Florida to west Alabama . Able to help us through some storms building in the area and we stayed visual, all the while instrument flights were deviating as needed left and right of course. Good video and typical of Florida summertime flying.

I'm glad to see you mentioned the Nexrad time delay. All too often pilots believe the Nexrad data is fresher than it actually is, which can have fatal consequences.

Great example of using ALL your inputs in aviation decision-making. I recently had a similar experience flying between cells out of the Bravo at DFW. On-board NEXRAD is good, ATC input is better, but staying in VMC and using your peepers in conjunction with the first two is best for avoiding convection disasters. Kudos to ATC maintaining flexibility on your flight. I thought our TX controllers were the best, but those FL folks sound every bit as good!

The transition at 8:06 made my heart sink for a second, as I thought the wing had violently dipped right after you said "it's not super bumpy right now". 10:58 Preach. Absolutely Right. Air traffic controllers (terminal radar and en route) can only work based off information they see on their scope. The weather radar on their often comes from different sources than what a pilot might see, the most useful of which (to the pilot) is their windows. TRACONs and the control floors of centers don't even have windows, let alone windows where they can see the weather a pilot is flying towards. They can maybe see their car in the parking lot on a break if they're lucky. This is a perfect example of exactly how pilots and controllers should work together. Goes for any situation. If you're issued a speed restriction that you don't think you can abide by, or isn't within the limitations of your aircraft, advise the controller. Communicate that. Controllers work hundreds of different aircraft types and can't be experts on all of them. Perspective matters, and if you have a different perspective and make a decision based on that as the pilot in command, by all means do it and communicate your intentions. Great stuff here!

All my flying has been out here in the PNW, and out here it’s generally either raining everywhere, or nowhere. You can kinda steer around weather, but it’s stuff like “avoid the Western half of Oregon this week” or “everything from Mt Jefferson to Mexico is IFR for smoke”. Thunderstorms are rare enough that there’s not much reason to be within 100 miles of one. This Florida stuff looks absolutely outrageous.

Ahh Florida in the summertime. Totally agree with staying visual but for me it would have been another night at the holiday inn. Kudos to ATC those guys are awesome.

Once again timely for me...working on my instrument rating, the checkride is about 3 weeks out. Watching you go through your setup as you briefed that approach and set up the 430 was just the best. I’m flying with the exact same panel as you through the checkride. Thanks again Josh Flowers!!

Josh, as always great video and amazing videography. Was great to see your work with the controllers and working the problem calmly. Excellent presentation in Florida “popcorn-like” storms. I am based at KSPG and summer time flying across the state is very challenging and always changing. Depending on the cloud deck, it is sometimes better to be 500’ feet below the cloud basis to see and navigate the showers underneath them. Lower allows you to be in quick access to the many airports throughout the state. Thanks Josh, your cross country videos like this are the best because everybody encounters a change in plans and we like to hear what you go through during your decision making process. Keep up the great work.👍

I love your videos and this one particularly. I'm a new private pilot and had a similar xcountry flight through lower GA with ATC and many diversions to maintain VFR. I questioned my plan once but knew that I had the 180 in the pocket, then everything cleared up. I definitely learned something that trip and gained confidence in my abilities/adm through my post flight debrief. Thanks and safe flying!

Great to see ya going to Pensacola, I haven't been back there since 2012 but now that I am a pilot and working on my IFR and looking to buy a plane in 3 weeks, I might need to do that as well. Those afternoon storms here in Central Florida are wild:) I can't wait to see your next adventure!

Josh this was one of your best videos by far, for me at least!! Excellent ADM while navigating all those TS, you were calm yet methodical when picking your way through the buildups. I was really pleased to see how ATC was so accommodating to making sure you and all the other planes out there were safe. Gave me greater insight into flying IFR. Thanks

Up front I'll admit I'm an ultra conservative pilot. You're obviously a good pilot and well trained but..... I feel like you put yourself in a position that I strive to never do. I ALWAYS want to have one sure fire fail safe way out. You mentioned "We can always turn back." Just remember you're tooling along up there with GS of 90-100 knots around multiple big thunderstorms and weather BEHIND you can change just as quickly as that around or ahead of you. GLAD all came out well! Felt like you were kinda pushing the limits. Good if not a little scary at least to me video! You did mention that if you had it to do over you'd have waited. I agree.

Wow! Those were some nasty storms! Glad you made it through without any major issues! PDM is tough.. but my instructors have always told me one thing... "Its always better to be on the ground wishing you were up in the air, instead of being up in the air wishing you were on the ground." - Great video Josh! 🙂

Josh, love your channel and videos! Your trip reminded me of a trip I took in a Cirrus a few years back from PDK to South Georgia and I used the same techniques to stay out of the weather. The Mark 20 eyeball is still the best WX avoidance tool. Thanks for sharing your experiences, techniques, and strategies for cross country flying.

Good vid, definitely agreed with that 90deg turn to the left, personally, I would have said unable direct to that fix they gave ya because it more or less took ya right across / through that area, but again, you obviously realized this and hence the “let’s make a left 90 deg turn to avoid” 🤙🏻👍

Video quality is excellent. Always impressed by your navigation/ communication skills. You make it look so easy, it's not. Hand flying single pilot IFR is tough! Especially in those conditions. ATC was spectacular.

Suggestion. Don’t say any chance when requesting something. Just say “request left right deviations”, “request direct”, “request 10000”. All too often this is becoming common. “Please”,”chance”, “can we”, “hope we “ are extraneous radio time. Also 10000 puts you in the middle of the wx in this case. Lower , or above , but don’t choose the middle. Lower may have meant showers with less deviation. You can still deviate while remaining vfr.

Whats nice is all these ATC services are free for GA aircraft. Not so long ago the idea was floated to privatize ATC if that were to happen good chance none of this would be free for GA to use.
