Weston and Kate, I have been following you guys since August. For two years we sailed an Islander 28 on the St. John's River in Jacksonville. We never made it out of the river, and had to sell the boat when we moved back to New England. So you are doing what we had hoped to do. It is great fun to watch. Now we charter out of Newport and sail Naragansett Bay (one of our fav spots is E. Greenwich where you purchased Parity). The Sailors Exchange in St. Augustine is a great experience...as is all of it. Thanks for the vicarious enjoyment. Peter

Wes; I consider dry-chem boat extinguisher use as a last resort. Great call on refraining from using yours. Although the very fine powder will quickly put out a fire, it is also exactly like spraying battery acid all over your boat. You can never get it all cleaned out and you will suffer from costly major corrosion problems caused by the powder later. Inverters not only need to keep dry, but also must have airflow to keep them from tripping offline during normal use. Remember - watts are watts; watts = volts x amps. Therefore a 1kw inverter powered by a 12 volt battery will draw more than 80 amps at full load which needs a fat 4-awg battery wire connection. Try to find a space for the replacement below that is near your battery bank and far away from the exhaust manifold. Consider "pure sine wave" units to keep your laptop and various wall chargers from frying too soon by using cheaper "modified sine wave" power. Your new GoPro vid/audio quality is mucho-way better than all your previous posts. Finally, what was the name of the app that shows the Matanzas anchorage summary? Continue to show us how to live the dream bro... Fair Winds! Jack, aka electricalpowerguy

For future reference when you get an electrical appliance wet you can place it in an container with uncooked / dry rice and it will absorb the moisture if you can't find any desiccant packets.

The Best lesson for me about living on a boat, and there are MANY, is to learn to deal with mishaps and chaos with a smile and a good attitude, maintaining a pleasant aire to life. You are doing this successfully. Thank you for being a good example. :)

Hi! Thanks a lot for all your inspiring videos. We're still waiting for spring here in the north of Sweden. We still have to wait a couple of month before the Bothnian Bay is ice free. Can't wait to go sailing again! Keep up the good work!

I'm literally about to buy a sailboat for the first time & become a travelling busker to pay my way! I've been watching loads of videos & I'm so into this lifestyle! I was just going to sail around Europe but now I think I may well just keep going everywhere!! I'm so excited for my new adventure! just me & my guitar, peace & quiet, no neighbors, outdoor cooking & hopefully I'll find my soulmate!!! wish me luck!!!

It never rains, it pours ! I love when you make mistakes. It means I get a chance to learn from them. See, I usually make the same mistake a few times before I learn how not to make it, for a while anyway.

I have wondered what you would do different with the knowledge you already have, everything from boat purchase to outfitting, in the end you are making it work and that brings a sense of satisfaction. An extra box of baking soda may be useful to smother a small fire before resorting to an extinguisher, sounds like you kept your cool. Enjoy the journey and Gods blessings.

All part of the learning curve man! Don't let it get you down. Each mistake is teaching you things you didn't know. I did that same trip a year ago from Palm coast on our Gemini cat. It is in the Bahamas now and we will be back to it in April. Maybe we will see ya then! Love what you do!

Wow, didn't know you could anchor there on the Matanzas. The little fort there guarded the south end of the river, the north end has the Castille de San Marcos (St. Augustine fort). There's a cool little State Park across from the fort, and the ferry boat to the fort is free. Re-enactors live in the fort and fire the cannon off, did you guys get to hear that all day? It's pronounced "Smur-nah" by the locals. That's our beach town. Same beach as Daytona but without the tourists.

+John Lampe great videos! I used to fly over Daytona and New Smyrna. We could see the Sharks in the water off shore. Pretty ominous sight. Also, if I remember correctly, New Smyrna beach is defined by Ponce Inlet on the south end. Named for where Ponce de Leon allegedly discovered the Fountain of Youth! A lot of history. St. Augustine, FL is the oldest city in the U.S. Thx for the vids

Regarding the inverter getting wet: When time allows, place it on top of a rag and spray CRC electraclean through all openings until it leaks out. Shake off the excess and hang it off the boom to air dry. Within a couple of hours retry it. It will probably work like a charm. Again....smooth sailing.........

Have you used Active Captain? its a great resource for your travels, you can put on your lap top, i Pad, whatever device you use. I have it on my i Pad and then got the Garmin blue charts app it works with that app, and shows all the reviews that are available. It is really awesome tool to have with you. check it out. You also have the ability to put in reviews yourself to tell about your experience getting in to a particulate place. so that other mariners can use your information and experiences.

I've noticed you use paper charts in your videos and I was wondering whether you have any electronic chart systems on board. I want to get into offshore sailing but also want to keep the electricity cost to run the boat as low as possible (i plan to run the whole boat with solar panels) Do you feel the paper charts are enough or should I make an exception and get an electronic chart system as well.
@WickedSalty
@WickedSalty 8 жыл бұрын
We have paper charts and GPS and a small back up GPS as well. Its always good to have as many resources. Hand held GPS units are a little bit of a pain to use but can run off double AA batteries, fairly cheap and are very accurate.

First of all, I enjoy your videos. Thank You. I didn't really like the camera change. I know the GroPro is a great product for action sports, however the camera you lost made the background within a "visual range" for the viewers, also it had a zoom, which the GroPro doesn't. None the less, keep up the faith, and may God smile upon you through your journey.

My small two stroke outboard that looks almost exactly the same as this one but called a 'Mercury 3.5 hp" runs on 100/1.... And it's the manufacturers recommendations..... for 5lr of fuel put 50ml of oil in the can! Sorry, I don't speak imperial any more. They are all the same motors but with different name badges..... My 3.5 also pushes my 7m boat at 5.5 knots so not exactly under-stressed. We all have ethanol now I think... Good two stroke oil will help of course... I love the smell of 2 stoke in the morning....
