I'm impressed with the number of videos you are uploading. I did the same trip as you, CT to Key West in 2012 and 2013 in a 40 year old Bristol 30 and battled to keep my UK family updated with just a blog! You are so lucky having Kate with you - she's a star!

One of those fancy oil lamps will put out enough heat to warm a boat in all but coldest nights. A blower in the engine room vented to your feet is a plus with a Bimini enclosed with plastic make a fall passage a pleasure. Always tried to leave just after the Annapolis boat show which we worked. We still chuckle about the runny noses on the boats we passed.

Kate and Wes, thanks so much for chronicling your journey to warmer places! Please keep them coming :) Now its 16 degrees here in PA - typical January I guess, but would be nice to avoid. We hope to do that trip in a couple of years. And Lola is a cutie, our dogs would love her.

I started watching (and subscribed) and realized that we probably passed each other on or about the 1st of December. I was transporting a 30' Pilothouse Trawler from Washington, NC to Norfolk, VA (I know - I was going the wrong direction). I cast off Monday around noon and made it to Dowry Creek Marina for fuel/stay at about 4 PM (you went to River Forest Maria). Thanks for your log. PS - you were correct - the ICW is pretty boring that time of the year but at least you had someone to talk to (I was solo)

I LOVE you guys! I also watch Drake & Monique on Paragon and a few others. I want to do the great loop one day. What are your plans and how did you two decide to cruise now, right after college and before your work career? You are gunna so not like work! CONGRATS on living the dream! I know what you are doing is work but its so fun. If you come by Corpus Christi I'll offer you guys a plane ride now & show you your cruising area. Keep the videos coming and please tell us about yourselves!

From the Yanmar manual: Important (1) RELEASE the push button when engine starts. If the push button is released before engine starts, wait until starter motor and engine stop running before trying again. (2) Do not operate starter motor more than 15 seconds at a time. If engine does not start, wait at least one minute before trying again. Note In cold weather. When starting is difficult in cold weather, raise the decompression handle to the "no compression" position and turn the starter motor over. After the engine gains momentum, return the decompression lever to the "compression" position. The amount of electricity needed will be less, and engine starting will be facilitated

Wicked Salty Awesome and good luck! How did you settle on that destination half way across the briny patch? Why not BVI or back around the keys up the W. Coast of FL?

How much throttle do you use while starting the engine? When it's cold try using full throttle while starting, and then immediately turn down the revs when the engine starts. That second when the engine revs cold will not do any damage to it, it won't get flooded with diesel, and you won't discharge your batteries that much. The decompression method which Orange Fish suggested is great when you are almost out of voltage, and you don't want to use the handle (it is too hard to start the engine that way so take good care of your batteries :) ).

I am enjoying your videos so much. I living my dream through you. When I was a little kid around 4 or 5 my dad would take me to an ice cream stand about 8 miles from our home in Central Pa. We live in a town of around 100 people. I would get a banana split and it came in a boat like thing. I would take it and put a pop sycle stick in the middle and call it my sailboat. I never went sailing but I knew I would love it. I joined the Navy and dreamed of getting my own boat some day. I got a winter home in Ft Myers, Fl and made a friend who has a Masters license. He built a few boats and repaired a few. He taught me how to sail as a novice. I am 56 now and a disabled navy veteran who lives off the VA disability money. I dream some day to get a bat and sail down the ICW and around the keys and up to Ft Myers. Due to some medical issues we're not down south this year. If you have the time check out SW Florida around Sanibel and Captiva Islands. UP around Pine Island is great too.

+Frank M Danisi Even though I have a Ft Myers address our home is 3 miles from the Causeway. I love sailing down there. Look up Captain Bob Weisman for a friend to go sailing with. He always is looking for people to go on his boat as friends with him.

Thanks for sharing all the nerdy stuff. Hard starting makes me wonder about glow plugs or some kind of engine or fuel pre-heat. You definitely won't need it in Exuma! I'm sure you have Active Captian Companion on board to alert you about ICW hazards while underway but what do you guys use for planning your waypoints?
@Syneraida10 жыл бұрын
I would look towards glow plugs or equivalent for the starting issue also, i've started lifeboat engines in the Baltic in -15C, without glow plugs they're pretty much impossible to start, with them they'll start after just a few cranks!!

Just saw you were on an Ericson 30. My first boat was a 29 with tiller. Sound boat you should be fine.
@WickedSalty10 жыл бұрын
She's actually an Ericson 30+, the plus(+) is a racing version of the cruising Ericson 30 I believe with differences like the delta fin keel on ours, rather than full keel on something like the ericson 29. Sally the other girl we ran into is on an ericson 29 with a tiller, you'll see in later vlogs if ya keep watching!

Do you need to let the glow plugs warm up before start?? Do marine diesels have glow plugs? I bet they do but I don't know. If they ≤in cold weather you will need to turn the motor on but not start it until they get hot.

Does the engine have no preheat system (glowplugs, zuendfix, air intake heating)? Below 5°C it's getting real hard to start a diesel engine without that. btw: To me the engine sounds all the time a bit strange, like something is not quite right with it. (or is it a 2 cylinder)? However, I enjoy watching your series -> Greetings from germany

great series! What do you do for heat on board?
@WickedSalty10 жыл бұрын
We used a "heat pal" alcohol stove for heat. I'm making a question and answer video coming up if anyone wants to have questions for it I'll be making an announcement on my twitter @wickedsaltywes for questions to be submitted for it!

Wicked Salty How old are your batteries? You very well might be seeing the start of your batteries showing a bit loss of capacity, which does come over time. Batteries last only so long depending on treatment. Is your starter battery separate from your house bank? Have you checked their water levels of late. As your starter batteries ages and your trying to start on a particularly cold day, it's ability to put out higher amps is diminished with the colder temps. This will cause the starter to turn at a bit lower rpm. If your acute to how fast your engine turns over when warmer, you would notice that it was turning over a bit slower that day. The lower starter rpm's make it harder to start due to the engine not turning over as fast as it would when it's warmer. Try to develop an ear to the speed of the engine is turning over when your starting it and you will hear the difference of trying to start with batteries that are cold, low on charge or starting to go not hold sufficient charge. If the problem is temperature related then as they age further you have similar events. Personally I'd take it as a possible battery issue but not an immediate concern. Obviously as this was months ago. Sailors who get into problems unexpectedly , sometimes do so by not paying attention to early warnings and missing the chance to correct up coming issues before they happen at a bad time. This may be one but not too urgent. Just make a mental note and be on guard, it may be nothing. Safe travels. SS

Thanks for looking out, I'll put that in the back of my head when starting her up! She hasn't done this since those COLD days.

Edward Snowden Excellent suggestion. Increasing intake air temperature would definitely bring easier combustion due the design of diesel engines.

@sailingsolar10 жыл бұрын
Not all diesel engines have glow plugs, believe it or not. The Perkins 4108 diesel does not to name just one. I had one for 18 years on my boat.
@Syneraida10 жыл бұрын
sailingsolar you are correct in so much as 4.108's don't have glow plugs, but they do have what Perkins call a "starting aid" which ignites a small diesel jet at the air inlet, thus providing "warm" air to help cold starts.

+Sal Giron I came here to watch the sailing and stayed for the face time. My husband heard me watching, came over, and immediately fell in love with these videos and the personalities as well. It all depends on the viewer and what they want to watch, so do not speak for us all. If you do not like this form of videos, then you could find something new or just deal with that part of it you dislike, but many of us love this style and love seeing the Wicked Salty crew, so I would ask them to change nothing. At the end of the day, it is their videos though, and they should be able to film them anyway they want.
