Gorgeous scene. Love Stannis' initial anger. He's furious that he had to kill his brother; he hates that he was forced to it and hates how he had to do it. And he hates his new Lords because they are all traitors who should have immediately rallied to him. He loves justices and would love to hang them, but, damn it, he needs them to win the crown; the thing that he also hates because he's forced to fight for it, when it should be given to him, but also because he doesn't really want it, but it's his duty to take it. So much rage, such a tragic tale. Then Davos unlocks the anger with the truth - undeterred by Stannis trying to tell him to f off, he persists because he loves him and Stannis loves him back. His rage melts into a cool change in policy, then collapses into sadness at the difficulty and ugliness of it all. Such a nuanced, brilliant performance. This guy is one of the best actors around.

His brother was a traitor and faced the penalty for betraying his rightful king, and yet Stannis still wishes it could have been different. This shows he isn't as stoic and emotionless as he pretends to be, there is a conscience behind the cold exterior and single minded focus on justice and duty. "Stannis is the most terrifying thing in the world, a truly just man." -Varys
@BravoDox Жыл бұрын
Varys didn't mean it as a compliment. Stannis is pure justice, which sounds great until you see what pure justice looks like. “If we all got what we deserved we'd all be dead." Justice is worthless if it's not tempered by mercy. Stannis was too bitter a man to be a good king. His default opinion of anyone was to hate them, and then for the occasional person he might decide to change his mind. Ned placed too great an emphasis on honor. Cat placed too great an emphasis on family. Tywin and Cersei both placed too great an emphasis on control. Jaime placed too great an emphasis on love. Tyrion placed too much emphasis on pride. Robert and Renly both placed too great an emphasis on pleasure. Stannis placed too great an emphasis on duty. Daenerys placed too great an emphasis on her dreams. ASoIaF is full of characters who are ALMOST great, but are missing something or other. Daenerys being the most notable example. Stannis is CLOSE to being a great king, but he focuses too much on his rules to the detriment of his humanity. He's so focused on his duty to serve the Seven Kingdoms as king, and his perceived duty to fulfil the prophecy of Azor Ahai, that he sacrifices too much to it.
@CheeseCrumbs00 Жыл бұрын
@@BravoDoxStannis sacrifices his justice for the good of the realm. He didn't burn Mance because Mance can help him fight the others. Yeah, and they also removed several plotlines from the 4th and 5th books, and stretched them into one season, except for a few storylines who got pushed in season 6 (ironborn, Sam to the Citadel, and siege of Riverrun). The ironborn were always butchered in the show, but destroying Euron was criminal. I also hate it how they made the Freys incompetent, since they are supposed to be a real threat, and the most powerful house in the Riverlands. The Freys in season 6 make impossible to believe they could succeed with the Red Wedding. In the books we know Walder and Lothar to be smart and dangerous as fuck, and Black Walder to be an actual threat. Overall, the storylines who got destroyed the most were Dorne, Iron Islands, Stannis, and the whole northern conspiracy revolving around Stannis's campaign and House Stark. In the show the Red Wedding had NO repercussions whatsoever. What makes the books feel more real is how the "bad" corrupted families win, but they destroy themselves because of their own flaws after they won. No punishment from heroes; just them turning against each other, or their own actions causing political damage and serious consequences. It's also a tragedy, because Freys and Lannisters have decent members too, and they get caught up in the fights because of their family name.

Book: Stannis keeps gaining soldiers from northenerns who join him. After absorbing the mountain clans and remaining Glover forces after freeing Deepwood Motte from ironborn hands he marches to Winterfell. He is even sought after by the Iron Bank who promise more money to him so he can hire more mercenaries. His daughter, wife and witch are all at the Wall, safely hidden. He stops at a fishing village where he prepares to take on the combined assault of the Frey, Umber and Manderly forces at once, having already dealt with false Karstark allies who intended to betray him. There is no parallel, except that book and show Stannis have completely *opposite* situations. Even if he dies in the book, he will certainly not lose to Ramsey Snow, a brash, impatient and incompetent general and neither is Brienne anywhere close to him, able to execute her "revenge" over the death of a pompous usurper and pretender, because she has forgotten that desire in the book. Plenty of people liked Stannis, thats why in the books he's capable of gathering most of the north to his side, the wildlings, and the mountain men too. The people that disliked Stannis were the people that knew Stannis was to smart to let them rise any further in power, If Stannis was king Vary's and Littlefinger both would loose all the power they had. In the books Stannis would absolutely never had anyone burned for not agreeing to change their religion, that was D&D fan fiction in S4 E1, nothing more. Atheism isn't really a thing in Game of thrones, but Stannis was the closest to an Atheistic character in that universe.

@willandrews97417 жыл бұрын
wayne king is right. I never really considered that. Stannis was one of the most interesting characters on the entire show. I can not make up my mind if he was honorable & just or selfish & cruel. He was unyielding that much is certain. I loved the way he met his end by instructing Brienne to do her duty. He understood her cause & that for her it was just & courageous. He seemed in my mind at least glad to be killed by the fulfillment of someone's duty, maybe even the fulfillment of duty to the Baratheon name. He would not have ever just accepted this prior to that series of events that led to that day, but after all of that, he certainly saw the writing on the wall & did not need any help understanding the meaning of it all at the end. Like I said in my mind he was almost glad to be means to the end of Brienne's commitment to his brother. He was a soldier & understood and or recognized a fellow follower of one's duty. He was summed up I think in this & in his doomed battle of blackwater bay, when someone informed him of the loss of life from the wildfyre & the admission that yes many more would die in trying to take the city but onward you must go for it is your duty. Like I said, is he a good guy or a bad guy? I think we would all agree more bad than good after he allowed his precious daughter to be burned. But, what if that action led to his victory & to the iron throne where he was in a position to save everyone during the long night? That is what he thought he was doing. I would love to read an alternate universe book where we see him on the iron throne & leading the 7 kingdoms during the long night, also a version where tywin Lannister was in that crucial role. I think at least maybe you could say that Stannis was not as selfish as Tywin. Tywin wanted to see his house exalted & also allow the 7 kingdoms to flourish beneath him. Stannis I don't think cared so much to see his family become a great dynasty he just wanted what was his by right & he would fulfill his duty to the 7 kingdoms. He actually did not seem to even like his family very much. These strong complex characters are fascinating to say the least.
@alexandermillar12027 жыл бұрын
I think the Lannisters would claim that he was a traitor who forfeited his rights by his initial rebellion. Plus, Cersei would never accept a challenge to her power just because of rights. She tore up King Robert's words, saying that Ned Stark would be Protector of the Realm for many years. Ned had the right to rule; it was the King's wishes and Joffrey wasn't even coronated. But it was ignored because she bought the right people and terrified the others.

It's a shame if Benioff and Weiss are casting Stannis in a negative light because they don't like him. Though, I suppose not liking him is understandable. But I don't think they would be deliberately unfaithful to a major character like that. I like Dillane's portrayal. It's more subtle than book!Stannis, even though I miss his constant bitter raging against everything. I think the showrunners are choosing to highlight the fact that, despite being the true king and a messiah, Stannis' life sucks majorly and its wearing him down. This scene really demonstrates that.

You're right, but I guess it was meant to be a simplification in the plot rather than introducing Ser Allister and Ser Imry. You should understand that you can't just adapt a book to a TV show 100%. It simply doesn't work like that. Introducing every single minor character might work in the books where everyone can read and study in their own time, but in a TV show they have time limits. Smaller attention spans from the viewers. You CANNOT introduce every single minor character.

Stannis is the older brother so it falls to him... they could've should joined sides and had Renly take over when Stannis died provided he didn't have children, although he would have. Anyhow, calling Renly the rightful heir is bizarre since he's the younger brother to Robert, whereas Stannis is the older and therefore next in line.

I think the argument could be made that only someone who follows the Seven can be king. Stannis, believing in R'holler, would then be disqualifyed from inheriting the Iron Throne. I don't believe that is written into the law in Westeros, but a more stern believer could still make that argument. This is my take on that point, but I a l so believe that Stannis himself also has just as strong, if not more so, claim to the Throne.

+OmsoiTekken What reason is there to believe Renly would've made even a competent king?
@Dakkar1548 жыл бұрын
+OmsoiTekken Basically what +14koder said. Stannis was cut off from Westeros in his position as Lord of Dragonstone. On top of that he was a incapable politician and did not inspire any loyalty. He was also rumored taking advice from foreign sorcerers which just further distances him from Westeros culture. Meanwhile, Renly was the Lord of Storms End and a capable politician. I can understand why the bannermen would follow their lord instead of his exiled fanatic, autistic older brother. I would have done the same.

+Alexei Strife He had experience as Master of Laws, he was popular at court and among the lords, he did not glorify war as Robert did, and he was much better than the alternatives. As Loras explained it, the realm would not follow Joffrey because he was a monster, Tommen because was too young and Stannis because he had the personality of a lobster.

+NinjaFilip "Personality" doesn't mean shit when you're the rightful heir to the throne. And are you forgetting that just prior to Season 1, Stannis had a position on the Small Council and was in King's Landing?

People seem to confuse who IS the rightful king and who they think SHOULD be the king. By the laws of Westeros, whomever occupies the Iron Throne, whether it be by conquest or through an heir, they have the claim to the throne. Targaryens were originally the rightful heirs, but because of the rights of conquest, Robert Baratheon became the king. Robert had NO trueborn heir, making Stannis the *_rightful_* king. You can't say, "Oh well, this guy is the rightful king because he _can_ take the throne by conquest." No. It doesn't work that way. If it did, we could literally say anyone in the show is the rightful king. Joffrey and Tommen have NO claim to the throne because they have no Baratheon blood. Renly has NO claim to the throne, unless Stannis died before he had a son. You can't backtrack either and say that Viserys or Daenarys is the rightful king/queen because the throne had already been taken by right of conquest. Until someone has taken the throne by force, Stannis IS the RIGHTFUL king. Even Ned Stark agrees.

+aGrazingCow Except Joffrey and Tommen are trueborn heirs, until proven otherwise.

+Ateka9 They have been proven, with what proof they find acceptable, however cersei did not care.

aGrazingCow What tangible proofs were produced? Publicly?
@pettersundbyindrevoll65228 жыл бұрын
+aGrazingCow The only proof is made by Stannis who was in open rebellion to the throne, and it would conveniently made him king if it was true.
