All I can say about strobe is from those that have used it a lot. Their conclusion on those of the receiving end was is that strobe made it hard to detect if the person holding the light was moving. With just the regular light they could detect movement but with the strobe it was harder to catch their movement. This was from a gun night training academy. So if a person found it important to hide their movement more, then the strobe makes a difference. As for me, I'll use the strobe in such circumstances. Oh, I should add, my Dad never told me to use a flashlight to look for things in a room with lights on but I do VERY often with my trusty Baton 3 (that is on me all the time), It will bring out details and colors to help you pinpoint things better. And if I drop something on the floor and can't find it, I put the flashlight horizontal on the floor and rotate it. You will see everything on that floor including how dirty it really is. Your house will be cleaner doing this.

wHaT aBoUt YoUr MiNd? Serious question for you though regarding weapon mounted lights: Flood or Spot? I know you normally are more into spot style stuff, but I feel like having a flood type light on a weapon makes it easier to illuminate something without pointing your weapon at it, since the light throws in a wider area. I know you said that you can't think of a scenario where you need to illuminate someone and not point a weapon at them, but still, being able to would be a benefit I think.

I have a little hybrid system going on, since I kinda got into collecting all sorts of EDC tools. I always have a tactical flashlight on a belt hoop, (if I'm wearing a belt), where I always use my left (non dominant) hand. I think of it as "the art of fighting without fighting". If you've got an threat yelling from a little bit away, it's easy to whip the flashlight out, and blind them if they step forward. As log as they're neutral, return the beam to their chest, so as to not antagonise them. I can easily take a step back while they're blinded. It also hides what I'm doing with my right hand. I also turn at a bit of an angle to maintain better balance. I hold the torch in hamerfist, almost level with my right shoulder to look like it's being held in my right hand. I can use the torch itself like a Kubutan, to smash down on any blind striking limb. A quick strike to the groin, is widen open, because ANYONE with a blinding light aimed at their eyes, is doing everything they can to shield their eyes, and still see what's coming. This will likely mean both hands outstretched, turned away etc. There's a psychological element to this too. If I can communicate the message that A) I don't WANT to fight, and B) The only reason you're not currently being hit, is because I'm choosing not to hit you. You WON'T see it coming. EVEY guy has a natural instinct to protect their spuds. The ONLY way you can do that, is to see it coming. If I HAVE to strike, to send the message, it will be aimed at ending the fight. A hard strike to the groin, or solar plexus will drop ANYONE. For the next few minutes, you have a LOT going though your mind, one of which is "oh shit, I'm vulnerable if this guy wants to fight me"....that ticks by, as they're on the ground. If I can end a confrontation without it coming to blows, I consider that a win. If the worst they're getting, is being blinded for a few minutes; so be it. Depending on what I'm wearing, where I'm going, and whatever mood I'm in, I have a variety of right handed EDC tools. I have a Cane Masters cane. I don't need one yet, but I'll be 52 next year, and I'm getting the odd shot across the bow. I got a tactical umbrella, which looks like a classy unbranded Mercedes one, but with a strengthened shaft, that you can use as a baton. I got an extendable baton, with a belt hoop. I have a tactical pen with a torch on the end, but it's too tall to carry in a shirt pocket. I have two sets of house keys, one with a Kubutan keyring, and the other, a Monkey fist keyring. The latest item to my collection is a tactical smartwatch, with a torch built in. I LOVE the idea of temporarily blinding an opponent, as a way to maintain a safe distance, and a deterrent. A torch in both hands is much harder to block, especially when both hands are holding aircraft grade aluminium force multipliers. The one benefit that I see of my little hybrid mix & match system, is that I only need to train specifically with the tactical torch on my left hand. It's always gonna be in my left hand. It's there to provide a constant distraction. I only need a few moves for any scenario with each tool, and only for the right hand. I'm also looking at that time period between you deciding that you need to invest in your own self protection, and you having the skills to feel safe. My plans for 2025, is to join my local Krav Maga class. My little system only really covers the short window where it could be deescalated into nothing, and a surprise opening strike, to end the fight. If that doesn't work, and it's on, then you need proper training from a professional. My choice of tools really come down to a couple of categories, in terms of techniques. A short stick is a short stick, whether it's a torch, pen, or kubutan, and a cane is just a long stick with a hook. An umbrella is just a long stick. The cane opening strike is either the hook into the solar plexus, or a flick of the wrist, into the spuds.

But this year they just released the protec 2.0. its a new battery system but same micro USB charging. It has a removable and replaceable battery. Hasn't failed a single time.

my experience with strobe.. many many years ago when i airsoft'ed.. flashlight with turbo.. people would duck out of the light, put a hand up to block the light, blind fire at light. with strobe people would seem to grit and try to look through light, and continue to blind themselves, trying to see you when the flashlight blinked "off". i like olight stuff, they arnt benchmade or big flashlight brand.. it is good mid-price stuff for what you get.

Having flashlight with back switch that is quick touch enabled and has a good amount of lumen and Candela works wonders together with situation and environment awareness. Warding off unwanted contact with a flashlight lit in the face of the opposer is like using garlic on vampires in most of the times especially if your awareness gave good distance. I shit you not that aggressively babbling ppl often immediately shut up and turn 180° going away from you. Even most agitated dogs goes away or calms down when lit on.

The truth is.. it doesn't have to completely blind them for couple seconds like it does during the night. Even 1000 lumen flashlight in broad daylight provides enough distraction to give you at least that "one free shot" which is always way better than nothing and can be a difference between life and death. I've been testing that and it's quite difficult to look at the flashlight and aim at somebody even something basic like 1000 lumens and bright adjusted eyes you have to look down or away. Obviously you were able to find him and hit him because he was just standing there.. he could jump to the side give you a front kick and run for his life.. still better than standing there with empty hands. It is a no-brainer EDC even if you have any other weapons. (in UK you can't have anything so flashlight + some skills can make all the difference)

you know what I've always wondered... why do small lights normally mean small lumens? They seem to focus on battery life, big output usually means a big honking battery compartment. But for a self-defense light I don't necessarily need it to last 25 hours at full output-- 15 minutes would be just fine! the actual LEDs are usually much smaller than the battery compartment, you could use a stack of coin cells that would last 15-30 minutes and have a lot more output when you need it in something that's still pocket sized.

Candela > lumens.. I’ve got a 400 lumen LEP light that puts out 400,000 candela.. that’ll blind someone under any conditions. This is mid range for leps.. some can break a million candela. I’ve got another that rates @ 750,000. These are only really otherwise useful for long distance illumination though so I rarely carry them. Average “tactical” flashlight rates at 10k-100k candela while putting out 500-2000 lumens. Candela is king when taking about disrupting someone’s vision. Personally I like my cloud defensive mch hc for this roll. 1100 lumens @ 80k candela. It’s a good thrower but still offers enough spill to be a decent walking around light on its lower settings. For comparisons sake, your average 2-3000 lumen floody lights usually offer
