I shoot for a living, and train people to shoot for a living, your choice is 100% correct. A pistol caliber carbine is the easiest weapon for non gun people to use efficiently. More points of contact so it's easy to point under stress, low recoil, cheaper to shoot, less noise and less intimidating. Not to mention its fun, so they will train with it more, and become more proficient with it.
@geoffrancobell94344 жыл бұрын
The revolver click bait got me. I agree 100% with the best firearm for anyone is the one they train with most. Also, I have a unique perspective from being up close and helping stabilize many gsw. Being a former trauma/icu nurse there are not many wounds that a come close to 223/556 and 12 gauge. I haven’t personally seen a human body with soft/hollow point 308 etc. but larger rifle caliber ball rounds appear to pass straight through. The 12 gauge tends to take large chunks out while adding many new chunks of foreign material. Due to the tumbling of 223/556 the wound channels are difficult to predict and lead to a significant amount of internal bleeding. That being said I live in a wooded area with a 200 yard driveway in a free state, so an ar pistol will always be my preference. Buuuut I also recently picked up boating and I may have an accident soon, so a good ole pump action may have to do the trick.

Exactly. I keep telling these people that self defense is more than just owning a firearm, it begins with your perimeter, then the entry ways to your home. We have a safe room which is our bedroom with brick on all four sides and metal doors will steel door frames. If they do get into the house we aren't leaving the bedroom. We are calling police and locking us in our bedroom. I can replace material belongings, we have good insurance, but I do not want to get into a gunfight over something that can be replaced.

You can still hold weapons INSIDE your house, as long you have the licenses required for your type of weapon, you are mentally stable to use it and you have a reason to hold it. This unless it is basically a rocket launcher or a full auto weapon. However, kill anyone with it and you'll be arrested no matter what (or killed by the aggressors inside your own house if you don't do it, choose your pain). But pull it out anywhere else outside the shooting range and you're immediately arrested. On the street you can't even pull out a screwdriver if you don't have a reason to do so. This whole video was me going "but what about..." and him immediately saying what I was going to say. I have to stop trying to play "gotcha" on this channel. Silly me. Great video. Totally agree with ALL of this. If I had to make a second pick it would be either a .22 LR or a shotgun with birdshot. Sacrificing some stopping power for less penetration. Also, the .22 is not as loud and has almost no kick so I feel comfortable with it in my fiances hands in an emergency. I live in an apartment and would be concerned a miss would find its way into a neighbors place. The 9mm does not over penetrate to a large degree but I have not been able to find one for under $1000 recently. Penetration can be less of a worry if you have a good family plan to get into one room so you know where everyone is. Anyway, Great video.

You had me till pistol caliber carbine (although I began to question your judgment when I saw the Taurus revolver), which is blowback, so has a recoil similar to a gas operated AR firing a light varmint 223. Frangible 223 will also break up hitting a barrier, whereas a 9mm +P will not, so misses put the neighbors at risk. Manual of arms on an AR aren't a lot different than a pistol caliber semi, so not a differentiator and 9mm ammo isn't cheap anymore. My inexpert advice for a novice non gun person, a Ruger 10/22. Cheap enough ammo to actually become proficient, zero recoil and lots of 22lr defensive ammo choices that will work well from an 18" barrel.

Watch basically any footage of a shooting and the bad guy usually runs or flinches or otherwise dramatically reacts when they're getting shot at, drastically changing the situation. But I just use it to keep pictures my kids drew, legal and financial documents and so on. Plus, before I rendered all of my firearms inoperable and disposed of them in a legal way I got into airsoft for cheaper muscle memory training. I decided it was a good idea to match as many weapons that I could to what I USED to own with as close as possible airsoft analogs. From arms length they even LOOK pretty much exactly the same. For ammo, the lowest velocity, smallest pellet bird shot. In any home defense scenario, at close range the shot may as well be a slug due to it not expanding all that much. Plus it mitigates the possibility of property damage to your stuff, your neighbors stuff, or injuring a neighbor. Buy a dual clamp that will clamp on the mag tube or barrel and a flashlight. I'm in the UK and this is another planet for me. In my house, in the UK you are far, far more likely to come across a burglar whilst you're home than in America. We obviously aren't allowed guns for self defense, it takes forever to get a license for a hunting/target weapon and if you defend your home with a legally held firearm, or even a taser/co2 gun/pepper spray etc then you'll probably end up with a bigger jail sentence than the burglar. So in every room of my house I have a melee weapon, a tomahawk and bat in my bedroom, hammers/ knives/ bats spread around. The burglar would probably run from a gun waving around but that isn't an option so we have to go with melee personal combat which is messy and probably more dangerous

If we are both home the 9mm and me go to first investigate and if I fail she’s holding the rear with the mossberg. Hopefully we will never have to find out if it’s the right plan. Lol. Reasons for those weapons is I could afford the Taurus and have had the mossberg for many years and have upgraded the barrel and ammo tube. For more capacity. #4 buckshot is to not kill neighbors with over penetration.

I feel like we get caught up on which weapon is best for home defense when I don't think that is as relevant as what ammo you're using. If all you have for your AR is 55gr ball, RIP anything behind the fool you're shooting at (same argument for 00 buck, slugs, any pistol cal ball ammo, etc). Correct me if I'm wrong, I have a feeling most times you start sending rounds at someone they're just going to run.

12ga Shotgun pistol grip with bird shot and 45 hallow point. Both of which will have limited penetration if you're worried about going through walls like in cities or suburbs. You don't want anything long since you'll have to wield it around corners and a long barrels give you away as you turn the corner. Hand guns are good. use slower rounds like 38 special and 45. The carbine would be good if you had long hallways and the guy was at the other end, but also give extra penetration due to more powder burn resulting in a faster round. The best gun for home defense is the one you had the most practice with.

My ideal choice: standard 16" AR with a light, some sort of optic, magazine w/ coupler (for a 2nd magazine), and a sling. This gives me most bang for the buck, and if someone is willing to buy a gun specifically for home defense, something like this would be what I would recommend. It's got the ideal barrel length, with little training, you can learn to move it effectively through structures, and if need be, you can wield it 1 handed for a limited amount of time. It is just a better choice all around, you get Rifle ballistics that are threat stoppers, not psychological stoppers like handgun calibers, and you can carry a good amount of ammo. An AR is also widely recommended by many instructors as well. I also recommend keeping electronic ear protection attached to, or right next to the chosen platform, an idea I picked up from James Yeager, Tactical Response. The other thing to consider is pure ballistics and physics. Generally speaking a rifle round is better for multiple reasons: You can carry a fair amount of ammo (5.56), It will effectively do the job, It is lighter recoiling than a shotgun and will likely take less rounds to stop a threat than a pistol would. In addition to this, Rifle rounds will for the most part stop sooner, than any other round inside a house, particularly the 5.56x45. This is achieved the same way it's stopping power is, through high speed deformation and fragmentation, so now, not only do you have more stopping power, a fair amount of ammo on board, an easy to shoot platform, a safer round to shoot in a structure, but it is also more effective over most ranges and scenarios than any other widely available option. Another reason why a rifle is a better choice, it is going to put less lead in the air, and be more effective with the least amount of liability attached to it due to less rounds likely to be used, more accurate shot placement, and you are most likely to stop your threat before they injure someone. Not to mention, should you need a follow up shot, which probably will happen, it has the least amount of perceived recoil, with the exception of a PCC like a CZ Scorpion or similar. "Pistols put holes in people, Rifles put holes through people, and shotguns at the right range, with the right load, will physically remove a chunk of shit off of your opponent and throw that shit on the floor, and you will have to get someone to come in and clean that shit up with a shovel" - Clint Smith, Thunder Ranch My recommendation: If someone asks me what gun is best for home defense, it generally leads to a couple questions, followed by a specific answer. In general though, assuming they are not into guns and just want something to protect the house and shoot from time to time, I would generally point them to an AR pistol, it's light just like a PCC, has better ballistics, light recoil, a good amount of ammo on board, the ability to be highly customized, and if you needed to, travel through the house / slice tight corners in order to either escape, evade, or secure another family member from danger. The only other time I generally recommend something else (not an AR regardless of barrel length), it is generally a handgun (not taking anti-freedom states), because they already carry everyday or are considering it. In this case, it is the best choice for them because they don't really want to spend money, probably aren't going to train more than they absolutely feel they need to, and they are already familiar with that particular platform. Moreover, it would also be an adequate choice for them because it will probably be on their person when they need it and, if they should find their self in a similar situation in a structure where they need to escape, evade, secure another individual, etc. It's easier to use in these roles, especially when securing someone like a child where you may find yourself carrying them, or holding onto them, only allowing 1 hand to use a weapon. What I do not recommend: Generally speaking, whatever you have on your gun, is what you're going to have available for any given fight since under most circumstances you likely won't have a chance to put on body armor and other gear if you have it, so something like a shotgun or revolver is generally not a good idea, specially the shotgun. Neither are particularly a good choice as a primary defensive weapon, regardless of your proficiency levels, mainly because of the ammo capacity or the lack of in both platforms without finding extra places to carry ammo, like in a pocket or something. That is why if a shotgun is going to be used, a side saddle for extra ammo on the gun is what I would consider to be mandatory. Shotguns have a massive amount of stopping power at the right range, with the right load, but they are also very loud, have a good amount of muzzle flash (18" and shorter), the lowest amount of ammo with the longest reload time, like the revolver, and the highest amount of penetration of any other weapon category within the platforms effective range. They also have the highest amount of liability attached to them as well. You are liable for every round, or in this case pellet, that comes out of your weapon. When you have something like a shotgun that shoots multiple projectiles at once, you really got to know what you're doing and what your backstop is because those are going to create a big mess. Not to mention every shotgun with different brands of ammo pattern different at various distances, so the operator should take quite a bit of time to see how their shotgun patterns at various ranges, going out to their max probable distance. Furthermore, the shotgun, like the revolver, really takes a master to run effectively, and then you get into fancy things like a slug change over technique for shotguns, or fast and effective loading techniques for both of the platforms.
