Apparently an Indian engine manufacturer holds usage rights for one of the engine models (I believe the 251) and they still manufacture it to this day for locomotive and stationary Power generation purposes. These trains are newer than you'd think

@@cpufreak101 no, all our current diesel locomotives are EMD designs, IR stopped producing ALCOs years ago. That said, the designs are extensively modified, and ALCOs are still quite efficient when run and maintained properly.

True to its heading, this is a good collection of hardcore smoking locos with the signature chugging sounds of WDM 3 Old Diesel Locos. The shot of the train over the bridge at 8:33 minutes with the noise of the train over the bridge and chugging sound of the loco is superb.

Maly Pivo The turbocharger on am Alco is called a free gas turbocharger it is driven solely by the pressure of the exhaust gas from the engine. The turbocharger doesn't begin to pressurize the air into the engine until the 5th notch of power through the 8th notch which is full power. Once the throttle position is left in either 5-6-7-or 8th notch after the engine reaches the rpm requested by the throttle position then the turbo starts to accelerate to provide the air it needs for proper combustion. There is always a lag of air from the turbocharger but once in for example the 8th notch the turbocharger spools up to provide the air needed. You will notice once at full power the smoke diminishes until nothing but heat waves are coming out of the exhaust stack. The real problem is Indian Railways are built on the lay of the land I.E.: not a constant grade hence to avoid over speeding the train the engineer has to reduce the throttle the as he's approaching the next upgrade has to open the throttle to keep the train speed up. This cause the smoke until the turbocharger gets back up to speed.. I've run Alco, GE, and EMD locomotives for years in the USA and they all smoke till the turbocharger gets up to speed. EMD uses a gear driven turbocharger as it is a 2 stroke engine and requires the gear drive to run when the engine is idling or below notch 5 the the turbocharger on an EMD runs faster than the gear drive driven by exhaust gas pressure and goes faster due to a clutch which allows the turbocharger to run faster when the exhaust gas pressure is there. Alco and GE both use free gas turbochargers with no mechanical drive at all hence they smoke a bit more till the turbocharger gets up to speed. From what I've seen of Indian Railway Alco locomotives they are maintained very well.

Thanks for the video, i used to drive old ALCo's over 20 years ago and if maintained they would burn clean once past the turbo lag stage. If you look at this video most of the shots are when the engines are still getting their boost pressure up and the turbo is still trying to catch up. So this is not a true indication of how they can actually burn clean after they settle down in notch 8. Also big difference is that these engines are accelerating fast due to the leaving passenger stops while most in other parts of the world were used for slow grinds with heavy freights and would sit at notch 8 for long periods of time. Another thing was that the Southern Pacific in the USA was served a notice about the pollution that their PA's produced when departing stations in CA, so really its a trait that has been around since ALCo's were first run off the production line. Just an observation

Indian railroads are interesting. Track looks well maintained and they run very heavy trains at high speeds on their wide rail gauge. Same size loads on US railways would always have 2 or more locomotives hauling. Alco 251 engines were always famous for making smoke, but many of the locomotives shown simply have worn-out turbochargers and injectors. Some of those Alcos would be over 50 years old so they have done pretty well.

In Some case, the problem is the driver throttle up the locos too fast. As a result fuel pump feed too much diesel to engine and the diesel have no time to burn properly. The turbos also take some time to charge up the engine. As a result black fumes exhausts. The diesel locos need to throttle up slowly and in every notch there should be so time gap, so that the engine rev up properly.

Good point but are you sure that the smoking problem is not due to old engines needing a overhaul or new engines. India is a fast rising economy and one would think that they would be working on their infrastructure first before spending billions on their space program. However, I'm sure that the government bean counters and politicians know what they are doing! It just seems to me that if one had a business with old equipment that was breaking down all the time and inefficient and costly to operate, that one would fix the old equipment and/or rep[lace them with new equipment before building ones self a mansion! But what do I know! On the other hand, it's good that there are not hundreds of people hanging on the cars and stacked on top, so that's a improvement! I have seen the videos of the old steam engine days and India's excellent maintenance facilities, is it different now that they have diesel engines? Would it be cheaper to rebuild and repair or upgrade the systems on these engines or by new ones? It's almost painful to watch these poor old engines doing the best they can with what seems a lack of proper maintenance!
@SubhajitSeth
@SubhajitSeth 7 жыл бұрын
Nightlightabcd: i am not an economist. In technical aspect, i am sure what i had written and the point by Ranjit Ranjan is also correct. The train had a good number payloads to haul. So sometime pulling the throttle too fast is necessary for avoid stalling.. that i can say.

All Alco Locos are currently being phased out. Possible after 10 years they won't appear.

¿Polución, calentamiento global ?, si, entra en un capítulo muy amplio y discutible ; como video ferroviario, una humeante maravilla. Muchas gracias.

The answer is easy:At idle,the turbocharger dont blow air and run slowly. When the driver put full throttle(nearly notch 8 or 8) ) a lot of fuel go to the cylinders,but the charger need some tiime to rise in rpm and begin to blow air. until this the charger make negative relative presure to the intake manifold, when begin to blow,this negative intake presure become to possitive pressure,and more air go to the cylinders,then the mixture air -fuel go to the ideal 17:1 and the combustion is better ,and the smoke is less . This is a disadventahe of the 4 stroke diesel(one intake each 4 strokes) vs 2 strokes(one intake each 2 strokes).In 2 strokes the charger rises his turns quickly.

Yeah , so the LP or ALP sometimes move at notch 1 to notch 8 in 1 second which causes all the smoke .

And also They should put hidden camera in locomotives. Because some BASTERD loco pilots drive very badly. And they spoil our indian Locomotives.
