Diesel Loco Shed Presents a compilation of Videos of Heavily Smoking ALCO Locomotives captured at various locations

I miss those days when I was a kid in the train led by ALCOs, sitting near the window seat enjoying the view and the smell of diesel smoke puffed by old ALCOs reaching the coaches behind, my mom used to hand me a kerchief saying not to smell the smoke but little did she know that smoke was like a deodorant for me, every time I smell that smoke I used to get goosebumps of how those powerful diesel engines in locos churn out power to haul tonnes of load. Love towards trains was in me, in my blood... I don't know. I used to get fascinated by them when I didn't even know what were they. And here I am today watching this video to relive those memories.

What beautiful rich, saturated colors! These scenes are as colorful as the old Indian miniature paintings. Love the sound and power of these diesels, quite unlike the new whirring electric engines which sound more like oversized kitchen appliances. Greetings from the California desert!

We used Alco railroad engines to power our air compressor. It was the world's largest dedicated air compressor 2000cfm at 2000psi. It was used to create air explosions under water for oil exploration. Ours had 1800hp and required an air turbine starter to spin it over.

That black smoke looks so cool. But, in the back of my head I'm thinking: "That's fuel being waisted"

No thats the extra fuel 😀.the extra fuel produces that much smoke

Thats not extra fuel. Its worned out piston rings and the oil gets by. Oil makes black smoke

@@bujecan It most certainly IS NOT! Alcos suffered from serious turbo-lag. That is why the Santa Fe got rid of their PA3s, They were always being fined by Calif's AQMD.

@@RameshKSingh-gp2mx News Flash! Electric locomotives DO NOT SMOKE! These smoking locomotives are Diesel-electric locomotives. They smoke due to a too-rich fuel mixture because of a slow spinning turbocharger. When the air/fuel mixture is perfectly balanced (or more air/less fuel) the smoke disappears. Stay safe and healthy.
@markschroeder25782 жыл бұрын
@@RameshKSingh-gp2mx Factory? Are you crazy? Electric locomotives get their power from power plants. And they're not all fuel burning. Ever heard of hydroelectric or nuclear power? Or wind? Or solar? Or tidal? Get your facts straight before making a comment. By the way, we Alco fans love them because they have a character that other locomotives don't. Just saying.

In Sydney, Australia, where I'm from, we used to have a whole bunch of smoky alcos just like those seen here (max 2000hp, though, not 3000hp like those shown here). Never saw anything like the train from about 7:50 onwards, though. That's some serious smoke. Almost up there with the 260 tonne garratt steam locos we used to have. Double headed, starting at the bottom of a 1 in 40 they did make a sight - watch at kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2KoiKN5hrVqm6c (from Belbin Video). I wonder, though, if there's any fuel actually getting burnt when there's that amount of clag!
@imacgra14 жыл бұрын
@Heiwajima Shizuo good on them with electrification. Don't quite know how you convert a diesel electric loco into an electric one, though. But then I'm not an engineer. Maybe someone else knows.

DLS, Thank you for you and your team of rail buffs for we senior citizens who find it difficult to chase the trains which we love so much. Can you please tell us which is the green colour train at 1.38 with double headers. I believe diesel double headers have a common control so that there is no confilict. I have always wondered how double headers steam locomotives coordinate as even a slight difference of torque between the two will result in one locomotive always acting as braking force and consequently slowing down the train. Any comments? rgrds VishG
@DIESELLOCOSHED8 жыл бұрын
ViswaNath GummaRaju Thank you very much for your encouraging words Sir. We are honoured that you have liked our videos. As you rightly said, the double headers can be controlled from the front locomotive itself and regarding steam locomotives i am not so sure of how they used to work. At 1.38, the train is 06512 / Jaipur Yesvantapur Garib Rath Special (which is now not running anymore) headed by Twin WDM 3A locomotives from Diesel Loco Shed, Moula Ali (MLY), SCR.

Most aof Alcos smoke,the engines have 4 stroke,the turbo is very lazy on low rpm engine,and of course,when apply throttle the air/fuel mixture ratio is poor (less than 15:1)and the ingnition is incomplete, For a better ignition more air may go to the cylinders,thiis happens at high rpm engine. Alcos smoke a little when go fast and the engine runs at high rpm.
