No criticism, as I always learn some valuable things from you guys. What strikes me about this video is just how much the genre makes a difference to what I can hear. The example shown in the first couple minutes is not the kind of music I enjoy listening to, and I didn’t notice any difference in the impact, power, etc. I turned it off after a few minutes. I’m glad I don’t have to mix music for a living and work through stuff like this that I don’t like, but again, I really appreciate your efforts to educate us.

I feel like this kind of music (the first song) is so heavy it's not heavy anymore. These kind of genres start to sound like electronic music, which is cool in my opinion. But it just doesn't feel heavy anymore, it's not stinky, it's not scary, it's just very well produced. What an evolution.

3:30 is not a weak mix by any means. These are super subtle differences that are important, but wasting time meandering on these things isn't going to instantly make your mix less weak. In my experience, it introduces more mud and more dynamics to have to learn to control. This video is essentially: How to fix a weak mix: Step 1: Start with a huge mix that is larger than life. Step 2: Add subtle volume automation, risers, and synth doubling to your already perfect mix.

I’m confused. I recently finished mixing one of my songs and I was really happy with it. I mastered it with Ozone 11 and finally mixed it down a -14 luffs. However, when I listen to it on Spotify, it’s noticeably quieter than the song that played before and after it. Where did I go wrong?

Most songs you listen to on Spotify are usually mastered a lot louder, to around -7 luffs, before being auto adjusted back down to -14. I would aim for -7 with the next song you release as this can make a much bigger difference than you would imagine. Without hearing my your mix, there could be other factors like not having enough midrange (or more lows and highs) which may make your mix sound scooped and quieter compared to the songs before and after. Hope this helps!

@ thanks so much, it really does help. I’ll try remastering the song tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. I don’t know if you’re familiar with Ozone but it has setting for “streaming”, which is what I’ve been using. I’ve been using Ozone Tone Master (I think that’s what it’s called) to make sure my mixes are sonically balanced and I think they sound pretty good, just not loud enough :/

@@officialWWM very welcome man. I haven’t used Ozone in years but the tone master sounds like the eq side of things is taken care of. I will always record the master into a new track in my DAW so I can see if something’s off and then bounce that new stereo track in solo. Once you’ve bounced your new master it should sound noticeably louder when you listen to the wav file vs songs on Spotify.

I'd suggest you ignore LUFs. Just focus on making the master sound great. My masters usually end up between -9 and -6 but a few times some tracks have ended up at -5 to -4. I know a guy who makes super aggressive metal/electronic music and he has got it as loud as -2 without distortion... But other artists get great results at -14 to -10. It's all material dependent. I'd suggest you stop looking at numbers.

I must be hard on one aspect. You claimed that no one listens to the mix in mono anyway, and that aspect can be over-looked. A mono-compatible mix is also STRONGER. It has a far greater area than just mono-listening...

Using a stereo synth to beef up the low end is really interesting. I always make everything bellow about 350hz mono thinking it sounded more solid but this is making me question that technique.

@kwamalascience I'm all over the place with genres but I typically move it down to around 250 or lower for heavier stuff. I write a lot on 7 strings in drop G so I think I may have better luck experimenting with moving it down to 150 or so.
