www.hardknock.tv Exclusive in-depth interview with producer DJ Mustard. In part 3 Mustard talks to Nick Huff Barili about how he created "Show Me" for Kid Ink featuring Chris Brown, breaking down each element that went into the beat while at the legendary Encore Recording Studios where he records at. DJ Mustard reveals his forthcoming single will feature Ty Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz, plus discusses connecting with Kendrick Lamar for the rapper's new album.
DJ Mustard is undeniably on top of his producer game right now, having multiple hits on the Top 100 for various artists. His sound is definitely in demand, and for an in-depth interview with Hardknock TV the producer breaks down how he created one of his chart-topping hits, Kid Ink's "Show Me" with Chris Brown. He also reveals the title and featured artists of his upcoming single, plus, he says he'll be working on something with Kendrick Lamar for the Black Hippy rapper's new album.
The "Show Me"-producer also details the progress of his expected collaboration with Kendrick Lamar. Though he says the track-which is expected to be included on Lamar's next album-has yet be created, Mustard guarantees that the song will be "greatness."
"[Kendrick] told me he wants me to yell on some shit," he says. "You know how I been doing that Fat Man Scoop shit? It's coming. Nobody wants to do that anymore. Nobody wants to have fun. Everyone always wants to be all serious and shit. I'm trying to turn up. I'm trying to have a party. That's what I want to do. I don't know what the outcome of that's gonna be but I know it's gonna be greatness...I know me and Terrace Martin were working on some shit for him, but we didn't do it yet. It's gonna come. It's gonna be hard."
DJ Mustard also questions why Hip Hop deejays feel that the only way to play big festivals is to switch to Electronic Dance Music (EDM).
"I feel like they don't have to do that," he says. "I feel like it's cool because I want to do EDM, too. I think that's dope, but why can't a Hip Hop deejay do that? I can. I know it's possible because I just did it. I just did the Raybans thing, South By Southwest. I'm doing a Brisk Bodega tour. I feel like that's by being a Hip Hop deejay. I don't do any EDM records right now. That's all by being a Hip Hop deejay. Why can't we do [big festivals]? We can. I just feel like they're so quick to jump to EDM, they don't think that we can play our own music. I did a show with my nigga Young Chop before. He don't even deejay! But he can do a show.
"I feel like if people start pressing that line hat we can do whatever we want to do, there will be more influence," Mustard continues. But they just be like, 'Oh, we can't get shows like them because they do EDM.' No. You can bring out the same amount of people. A lot of people like Hip Hop. Everybody don't just like EDM. Make your Hip Hop build up like the EDM. That's no respect for EDM. I got a lot of homies that [are EDM deejays]. Diplo. I met Skrillex before. Cashmere Cat-that's the homie. Disclosure-they hard as fuck. I went to the Horror Fest. That shit changed my life, but it also made me feel like you could just be a Hip Hop deejay and do that, too. I'm actually playing the Horror Fest this year and I'm playing all Hip Hop."
Mustard revealed the title of his forthcoming single, (which is not "Vato" with YG, Jeezy and Que that previously dropped),"It's called "Down On Me" and it's featuring Ty [Dolla $ign] and 2 Chainz. And that shit is a movie." As for when we can expect the track, Mustard says, "Any day. Never know. I might just get crazy one day and just...you know what I'm saying, ain't no preparation for this shit."
The California-native says that he recently learned that he has eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100. He also says that every award show should select him as Producer Of The Year.
"I just read that shit," Mustard says. "We got eight [songs on Billboard's Hot 100] now. We're 8% of your Hot 100. I'm trying to be 10%. I need Producer Of The Year for every award show. Every one. All of them. I think I deserve it. I had an epiphany right now."
Stay tuned next week for part 4 of our conversation with DJ Mustard.

He has good reason. He has top charting tracks and being 8% in the top 100 is damn impressive. You got 1 hit wonders, but nah DJ Mustard has multiple songs up there. He has confidence in his work and that's something you need. He never said he'll crush every other DJ or producer, but he's talking with the right amount of confidence. Now if he had 1 song hit top 100 and he's talking like that than that's reasonable. He gave a great interview and his idea of music is in the right direction. Shit is heading towards EDM, but he believes Hip Hop is still there if you produce some good shit.

he said he thinks he deserves producer of the year from every awards show...my ass. flipping the same 4 pattern beat over and over isn't PRODUCING!!! Harry Fraud, Sledgren, Cardo, 183rd, Brock Berrigan, Dave Free, Statik Selektah, Thelonius Martin are ALL real producers.

All those guys were probably just bums who sat on their asses and watched singers record their vocals in the booth. At least DJ Mustard is actually COMPOSING a track!

Most big time producers don't mix or master. They send it to an expert to make it sound top notch.

Rule number 1 of making your own music... if you're mixing it, and you have the loot to get it mastered by someone else, you take that opportunity and send it off to someone you trust. You dont have a fresh sonic perspective/ unbiased opinion of your track after mixing to hear what it needs in the mastering stage.

DJ Mustard is hot right now because his music is serviced primarily to clubs. His beats are basic key strokes and simple drum loops. "Show Me" is mildly impressive but "Side Chick" seems like a watered down copy of the original hit single. I respect his confidence but he comes off a little cocky when nearly all his beats sound recycled.

Antonio it's not difficult. it just takes a lot of time. learning how to do it, and then when that's done, actually executing what you learned. it's not straining or "skillful" it's just a long procedure. you don't have to be special or gifted
