Excellent video, both parts! Two months without a rear shock absorber and the body gets used to the new position and balance, you become technically more advanced and skilled, the rear shock absorber stops missing and the body gets used to the hardtail frame. You start picking better lines on the track, even on the jumps and technical parts of the track, you just become a better rider overall!!! Cheers!

I must admit the idea of running a mullet on a HT is an new and interesting idea for me having performed a similar exercise on my entry level Giant Fathom E+3 29er. I dunno if you had those Rockshox Judy’s fully serviced on the inside but for the kind of riding I do, I absolutely love my Judy’s seeing that they cost me less than £200 and were way better than the Suntour Springs that were originally shipped with my bike.. Which reminds me, I need to get some new stickers for my forks. When I was a kid, building a bike on a budget used to be the thing. Now, it’s all about the bling and the money. It’s so good to see that I’m not alone in keeping my shredding REAL! Hardcore Hardtail for Life! Please accept my sincere apologies about my comment about your Rockshox Judy’s. You did indeed have them fully serviced. I know that they come stock with 120mm of travel but have you tried adding an extra 10mm of travel into the mix? I did and I haven’t looked back.

I've done a similar thing with a Kona Fire Mountain from 1999, the wheels aren't modernised but I've put a front disk, more modern fork and better gears on, it rides quite nicely
@midpackrider Жыл бұрын
Sounds a good project for an old school set up, nice one, how does it ride?

The front end lifts up when I climb but it rides silently, feels really modern

Great videos! Have been riding a hardcore hardtail now for a year, next to my Enduro rig. I‘d say it is the fast stuff with all its chatter that‘s hardest on my body. Jumping is relatively fine with the impact always being expected, and also slow, technical stuff works pretty well. Larger tires with 2.6“ with low pressure also helped a lot.

I agree Robert cheers, good to know there are similar opinions out there 👍🏻

@@midpackrider Locking the wheel up with the brake makes it worse. If you ease of a bit the wheel will rotate to where the trail face is further away from the rim because the tyre isn't compressed by the last hit.

Nice bike! Enduro hardtails are amazing. Once you are used to flowing through the trails (pumping and unweighting) and not just smashing through like most people on full suspension you'll really notice how good it is.

I was kinda thinking this, Ive ridden bmx most of my life and I am currently waiting on my first mountain bike to ship. Alot of videos I watch make me question getting a hardtail, until I realize Ive ridden a bike with no suspension as long as I can remember. Using my body as the suspension should come as second nature.
@FirstnameLastname-pe5ib2 жыл бұрын
@@harleylincoln5775 100% the move. People that jump straight to full suspensions invariably suck at riding over the course of time. Rigid and hard tails require that you know how to ride to get down tough trails. So if one day you decide to get a full suspension, you'll absolutely be bombing effortlessly compared to those that went the poser route

Spot on for a first ride .. I ride my HT 90% of the time … but keep riding both. Lots of stuff just seems boring on my FS now BUT I love both and whenever I jump on either and ride I love em and they don’t get jealous I run an insert with the 511s (and not schwalbe as fit is insanely tight) maxxis go on fine with only a bit of swearing. Just a heads up as you fitted the maxxis I’m not a maxxis fan boy but the 511 and insert makes fitting schwalbe a nightmare ) The 511s are stupid strong and with the insert, low pressures and a DD rear will give you loads of suspension.. Forks - yeah you know it’s just appliance of ££ Pedals … yeah and nah The middle chunder where you want to pedal you just have to pump as much as possible and to and extent say fun&& it when you can’t OR go clipless Really steep shit it really doesn’t matter just get heels down and throw her down I don’t give a monkeys about climbing efficiency anyway as my mates are on FS mostly so clipless isn’t a reason for me. I persisted cos I have a buggered knee that only really gives me jip pedalling seated If you have mates with same size feet maybe give it a go just remember chance of a big injury js way higher so is it worth time off etc up to you I still put on flats for big jumps and drops days .. but they do let me pedal over that chundery stuff .. I found a couple of pints helped ymmv.. we got loads of wet roots and clipped in I was just constantly worried about losing the front (plus mates with shattered legs from being clipped in)
@midpackrider2 жыл бұрын
Eyup Stephen, thanks for all that, good advice and yeah I was planning to add an insert I have in garage, bought 2 and dnt see point of putting other in front wheel of my canyon.. I have a few mates that ride all features clipped in but not sure myself, thanks for all this, I’ll keep it mind and may mention on another vid if that’s ok 👍🏻
@stephenlord5992 жыл бұрын
@@midpackrider if it was a cheap thing to try I’d say go for the clips but shoes plus pedals is price of a decent used fork and you know you want that !! If you can borrow Give it a proper go though .. and I did find a couple of pints then riding familiar and easy to me trails got me over the worst … then after I felt more confident A lot depends and you and mates though .. if they don’t mind you being 30 sec slower down a 5 min run why give a monkeys .. depending who I rode with I’m either front, middle or back .. but the “elite group” has a few proper EWS national level riders and I’m at the back on the FS anyway whereas my old farts group I’m at the front on either When I go out with the “faster old farts sub group” I’m keeping up with my mates and some also ride HTs One thing I’d say is went out with the faster old farts and took the FS as I hadn’t repaired the HT and felt really jealous following a mate on his HT I could see him visibly having more fun in front of me … I could have gone faster on the FS just smashing a line but that doesn’t appeal to me as much as just hopping of anything I find and picking a HT line That said I still love the FS it’s just different .. I took the FS out yesterday cos I bought a new to me coil shock off a mate … rode the bike park I have only ridden on the HT for a year and had a blast There is a jump line I can never carry speed into on the HT not massive but big enough and braking bumps round the berm before the 1st gap and I just sailed through on the FS whereas some bigger lines it made no difference It’s equal measures of grip, getting in pedal strokes and lack of balls on that one trail .. the gap has claimed a few victims ;) Equally if you ever get up to Havok (when it hopefully reopens take a FS unless you stick to the DJ side) I bought the ards.. really happy with them but can’t see the point on the front at least in terms of ££ so I split them across 2 bikes It’s transformed the HT in terms of low pressure adding some small bump and the rims are freakin bombproof already but the progressive ramp up you get is awesome

Great video, I've a 2012 Trek which I've done almost the exact same set up as you! (except for the frame/dip which I am planning for when I get a second bike (as I don't want to have no bike atm) I've only ever had the HT with flats, so I just got used to the pedals and feet getting bounced about, and hardly notice it now other than that sickening feeling of riding a heel for a bit. I think my adjustments (to get the foot back on) just come faster and I think about it less even though I'm probably doing it a lot. I'm planning on getting a full suss in June, so will be good to see how they go side by side, and if I'll still want to ride the HT after that?
@midpackrider2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, thanks man! sounds like you are well established with the HT, I’m sure you will be unstoppable with a full sus and perhaps they both will have their place, good luck with the new bike soon

I have the same frame but a xcaliber 8. Have you found a way to upgrade rear axle? I heard DT swiss has RWS axles to convert to 10 in rear and 9 up front but not sure if they will work with the Trek hubs. Also there is a headset that slacks the angle but forget who makes it.
