Wow yet another film I've never known of before but sold by this review way better than any trailer. I'll be checking it out. It's very good looking but feels like a entire story set in the Star Wars Cantina. Stiil better than bantha poo doo in cinemas these day.

I love this movie. I get people might find the story underwhelming, but to me it always seemed like a cyberpunk atheistic meshed with an Evil Dead/Argento type film. One setting, a lot of gore, kick ass visuals. I think the film does some unique and interesting choices instead of copying Alien or The Terminator. Plus all the subtext and themes of religion, cyberpunk, and an apocalyptic setting is shit I eat up like a child in a candy store. Great film. Fulci never really had great stories, but his films we're a nightmare of horror you kind of just experience. Hardware kinda goes for that instead of a film the typical sci-fi stuff.

I have quite a soft spot for Hardware. I love movies with clever effects, and cyberpunk is my favourite genre. It was made with love and it shows. Richard Stanley is quite a fascinating character. I second the recommendation of Lost Soul, it's an awesome documentary if you are at all interested in behind the scenes stuff. I don't want to spoil too much, but things start going wrong when Stanley gets his friend "who is a warlock" to cast a spell of protection on the movie. And the crazy stuff with Richard Stanley is only about 1/2 the movie, there's also Marlon Brando's bizarre behaviour and Val Kilmer being a huge jerk. Stanley also shows up in the "Jodorowsky's Dune," the documentary about the failed Dune adaptation by insane visionary director Alejandro Jodorowsky. Stanley is acquainted with Jodorowsky and is one of the few people to have seen the complete storyboards and production designs for the Dune movie- all with Jodorowsky describing his vision for each scene. Stanley says he's may be the only person who has come close to "experiencing" what that movie could have been.
@scaccu
@scaccu 4 жыл бұрын
Stanley is actually the director of Jodorowsky's Dune (one of the best movie documenatary that i've never seen to the point of buying it but only after buying the complete Chriss Foss's catalog in the book "Hardware") and i'd say that pretty much everything in Lost Souls are already known but that seeing Fairuza Balk still in her prime whorts the vision.

I saw this in the theater in '90 and the atmosphere was so distinct that the skeletal plot wasn't as troublesome. As you say, I wanted to see more of the world but sort of liked the claustrophobic feeling of being restricted to the confines of the characters realities.

I always thought Richard Stanley got a raw deal once he was given the directional duties for Island of Doctor Moreau. Dust Devil By Stanley was a great film that followed Hardware and is truly underrated. What I love about Hardware is how such a world is fleshed out on a low budget. The movie had atmosphere, and good characters. Def felt like a companion film to The Terminator. I read the original 2000AD story that Hardware was based on, and this was way better. This was a pretty good date film for me in 1990, I was 14 years old and was more into the film than my date.

Oh Hardware, how I wish you were an epic movie. The Cyberpunk / post apocalyptic genre is so underrepresented and I love this category, besides Terminator, Blade Runner, Robocop and maybe a few others, most of the movies are low budget and pretty weak. I saw this movie as teenager in cinema, and the opening and the first part is awesome, but as soon as the "robot" is revealed, the low budget takes over. There is a scene, that looks like a music video, the robot is a barely moving puppet and looks cheesy, and not at all scary. Such wasted potential. I tried to re-watch it after many years, but just fell asleep. Too bad, we sill have to wait for a great movie in this genre, Hardware is a great set-up, but nothing else.

Appreciate your review of this. I saw this a few times in the early 90's when CINEMAX used to run it late nights on weekends. While you're not wrong about the thin plot, I think this is one of those films that is more about the visual/audio experience than in the story. Similar criticism have been levelled at "Bladerunner" over the years, although one is a clearly superior film to this film.

Got into your channel over the summer, dig your retrospectives and the podcasts and commentaries with Richard and Duncan. This video brings to mind Steven Norrington's Death Machine. I'm under the impression it's the movie he made to lock down his shot at Blade. It's definitely a celebration of B-movies, heavy on the Terminator and RoboCop's, lil Aliens and such, has some corny elements but not to it's detriment. Make for a great retrospective, definitely a complementary video to this one. Like to hear what you have to say about Norrington's career, and what you think about DEATH MACHINE.

It's just come to me now that there's a cameo from the American actor who plays captain Hollister In Red Dwarf series 1 and 8 if memory serves me right. He played the news anchor, here in hardware

I really like the set design and general world that this movie creates, it somehow feels very real but also 90s-futuristic and cool. I could have done with less blood and gore, but it is a horror movie so that's to be expected. I've watched it a couple times now and agree it gets better on repeat viewings, it's got something that keeps me coming back to it

Saw it yesterday, loved it. I cant believe it had such a small budget, the visuals and music are amazing. It was the first time since my childhood that I had the urge to watch the movie two times in a row. Only thing I dislike is the last scene in a regular bathroom with white tiles, it looks like ordinary bathroom, feels a bit off compared to the visuals and interiors in rest of the movie and is only reason I dont consider this movie completely perfect. Unlike terminator this movie had me scared on few occasions and had suspense, I never felt suspense with terminator, I consider it more of a action movie than horror but this one is both.

The media show, on Channel 4 dedicated an entire episode to the filming of this, that episode cemented my desire to work in special effects. It was done on the cheap, and even then the budget was at 900,000 thousand pounds. The roundhouse, the sets, the models, and effects were heavily featured in the episode. Sadly it was 15 years before I got to see the film.

I heard about this film via an American TV entertaiment tabloid, they made a big issue out of it being threatned to be rated X on it's release and the actress being alarmed her career would be ruined when she thought it would be her big break.

I saw Hardware in the theatres when I was 22, and fell in love with it. I went across the street to the local record shop and bought the soundtrack for it basically right away. I agree this movie isn't 'stupendous' but it definitely 'checks off those boxes' as you mentioned, for what I enjoy. Good plot, interesting scenery, good music, sfx were good, gore was good, basically everything was 'good' but nothing was 'great'. But it was one of those movies that was more than the sum of it's individual parts I feel. Something about it just holds a special place for me. Always had a soft spot for the character 'Shades' too, he is one of my fave characters in the film. For those who didn't know, Richard Stanley also made another great movie (in my view) called 'Dust Devil', filmed in South Africa and Namibia. That is a great movie too, I like it better than Hardware. It has a an amazing ambiance, and the scenery and story is great. Obviously Richard Stanley had a certain style of movies that spoke to something inside my brain, as it doesn't seem coincidence that two of his movies are in my top faves list.

The thumbnail to this review got me to watch the movie, I enjoyed it for the most part. Hearing it had such a small budget raised my appreciation for it. It is clearly a product of its time, it reminded me of Mad Max and The Terminator. The cameos of Iggy Pop and Lemmy were great as I like their music. I even saw Motorhead live about a year before Lemmy sadly passed away. If they ever make a sequel or a remake of this movie I'd cast Emma Stone as Jill, as I think she looks a lot like Stacey Travis.

Oliver - you've gotta do one of the most beautiful horror movies ever made - "The Serpent and the Rainbow" by Craven - also loosely based on the book by shunned anthropologist, Wade Davis (is that right?). - Doesn't matter - it's Craven's most beautiful movie.
