It would depend on the switcher you are using, some hardware encoders have switching, titles and audio switching built in. Like our Pearl-2 does. In other cases you might be using a broadcast style hardware switcher that has those features and just sending the pgm out to the hardware encoder, our Pearl Nano is popular in that use case.

can you give me the top ten affordable hardware encoders in 2021 / 2022? i cba with sacrificing my pc for unreliable sw encoding. I am after a one stop shop, something that has a dvd and vcr slot you put it in press a button go away come back and have a mp4 on internal hardrive / usb.

The biggest factor is the bitrate of your encoding, whether you're using hardware or software. In most cases, purpose built hardware will be able to encode the same bitrate faster/more efficiently.

Nope, not really. At least not any worse than using your components at all is. Using the parts and getting them hot will result in some wear and tear over time, so a gaming PC used daily for gaming might burn out a few years quicker than an office computer that's used 5 days a week for excel and cat videos. But no, no unique damage.

For software, you could definitely use OBS, or Streamlabs OBS. Your system will be more than adequate.

A good mesh up of HW and SW enc bring you to your goal. A full perfect chain of HW encs means lotta bucks. Probably too much, unless you are CNN.
