Dan R. Hansen depends on how many drives are in an array as more drives means higher risk and the quality of the drives. A set of brand new WD blacks or golds are probably the best option because they are built better than say a WD green. I got seagate baracudas because they are much cheaper and very fast. My steam library is entirety replaceable so reliability isn't a huge deal.

Eber, please tell me you have redundant solution in place as well. RAID 0 is very fast but also prone to random catastrophic failure. I've worked in I.T. for nearly 15 years and have never seen a raid 0 setup last more than a year w/o one drive failing.
@jezwc7 жыл бұрын
baltmatrix that’s interesting! Why do you think the drives fail? Does RAID configuration overwork the drives? I don’t work in IT, but I love learning :)

Well my 2x 120GB Samsung 840 Evo RAID 0 has lasted 2-3 years with no problems. I use them as a boot drive and there is nothing irreplaceable in them so it isn't a huge problem if they fail.

@baltmatrix7 жыл бұрын
As a boot/primary OS drive RAID0 is fine. For the kind of data drives that Eber (and I) are dealing with the failure rate is much higher due to the shear volume of data being scrubbed on/off of the drives.
@MuHammer977 жыл бұрын
Its not only that thjey coud fail early, its just the plain possibility, that ALL data is LOST if only a single drive fails! RAID 0 should not be used unless it is realllllly necessary to get that kind of speed AND you have daily backups or you are fine with losing the data!

I appreciate that it's a handy little piece of tech with some great storage density, and the video was incredibly well done too... though media production houses are stuck in the old way of thinking about approaching editing with scratch drives, and buying big expensive raids with connections that have enough overhead to keep up with multiple streams of 4K, which can be really pricey. It's 2017, and we've moved well past the days when we use to have internal system drives spinning at 5400rpm, when having an external scratch drive was important for several reason at the time... but today's NVMe drives have so much overhead data throughput that I've been editing 4K straight off our internal system drives (with overnight backups) intensively for the past two years on several machines... and absolutely loving it!! The overhead throughput is so high that there's virtually no need to be connected to a scratch disk anymore (unless you're collaborating on a project between machines), and then at the end of the project, everything gets archived to a set of the cheapest drives available for long-term storage. Editing on the NVMe's and then offloading to cheaper storage overnight at the end has both expedited our little production house's pipeline, and saved a lot of money... which means more time goes into the edit, and more money goes into camera gear :)
@tams8057 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what your point is? You use your NVMe drives as scratch disks (only nowadays you can keep a whole current project on it) and then archive stuff when you're done with it.
@ChrisProuse7 жыл бұрын
My point is; unless you absolutely need to collaborate on media projects between multiple machines... it's time to stop thinking about using large expensive scratch drives to speed up your workflow, or to protect your system drive... because in 2017, the fastest storage available is probably already in your machine, and more than capable of keeping up, and / or exceeding whatever you could connect to externally. It's okay to edit on the internal NVMe, and then afterwards offload / archive your media projects to cheapest long-term storage available to save yourself some cash. I just think it's kinda funny that I still see people trying to edit 4K over usb... for reasons that made sense 10 years ago, or simply because that's how they've always done it.

Although windows will initialize the drive in the boot regardless of this which will take time if the drive isn't initialized already and hand-over properly. Only way to speed things up is power the drive down during the boot.

Or, well, if you know the handover won't be done properly, then you can skip the initialization in post and speed things up that way but that is only one case. And with modern hardware and UEFI boot, that handover usually happens how it should happen.

Might be late to the party but have a question I'm curious if you know the answer to. I have the same Duo but with two 8GB drives inside. When I first got it I set it up to RAID 0 so they both function as one drive. Looking back I probably should've done it as two drives as now when they are filled up and I want to add two new ones to the enclosure It makes me wary to remove them since they are connected to each other right? I can no longer access these drives separately correct? If I remove them and add two new ones, then want to access these current ones do I need to put them both in, in the same slots as before for them to recognize as a unified drive again? Curious on any insights you might have about this! Thanks.

Yeah I was just thinking that lol. Cloning 20TB's sounds like a long day of "fun" but I would imagine as content creators they would have an equal or greater amount of space in either a desktop or server system them could transfer between.
@blahorgaslisk77637 жыл бұрын
Usually the thinking is that 'once I fill this up I'll be able to back all of it up to a single drive'. Unfortunately that's usually not how it goes. The mere existence of empty storage seems to generate content just to fill it up all by itself, and the dreaded message that storage is running low comes way sooner than you thought it would. As this is Raid 0 we're talking about anything not considered expendable has to be backed up somewhere. So I guess in this case just yanking the old drives and slapping in a couple of new will be fine. I think he wouldn't even bother pulling back all the files, just the ones necessary for the daily production. The others would only be pulled down from the backup server as needed. All of this is of course mostly guessing, all but the need for reliable backup. Disk striping is really dangerous. Before using R0 you have to know what the risks are. Knowing that your data can be gone and really KNOWING that all YOUR DATA CAN BE GONE is two different things. But this is true even with a single disk. It fails, your data is in serious risk of being gone. Sure you may be able to save some of it if the drive isn't totally bricked, but if you have to take it to the experts to recover your precious data it will be very expensive. So back up that drive!

@HardwareCanucks NEVER put production data on RAID 0! You WILL LOSE DATA! Switch it to RAID 1! ALso WD's external controllers have a bad reputation for failing and then making it impossible to read the data even if you remove the drives and put them into another system due either to it using encryption or proprietary RAID. Take it from someone that has been in the industry for over 15 years and owns and manages file servers for myself, my company, and for our customers in the Petabytes DON'T USE RAID 0!
@amshermansen7 жыл бұрын
10 years of WD and not a single issue here. This is reaching the point of scaremongering - though I will definitely agree that RAID0 is not the way to do longterm backup.
@RCcola19877 жыл бұрын
Well let me put it this way: We have over 5,000 Drives in service at any one time not counting the drives we monitor for our clients which would be aprox. another 10 to 15 K. Also we typically cycle drives out for new ones (either due to needing larger capacities or due to failure) about at 2 to 3 years of drive life. Typically we see more failures in drives that are sold direct to consumers and especially be WD direct to consumer but that is not what i was talking about. What i was specifically speaking to was that the USB/RAID/SATA controller boards that WD uses in there external enclosures are of dubious quality either due to firmware or hardware design. We get about 200 to 300 external drives a month from customers to recover data off of and in most coses if it is a WD enclosure the driver is NOT what failed but the controller did. The issue in regards to HardwareCanucks are as fallows: 1. They are a company and their videos are there product and there differentiator in the market. If that data is lost (Like many other large KZbinrs have had happen in recent years) it could mean the end of their business. 2. As a business they should be using something that is battle tested and proven for the enterprise and not just a personal consumer product built down to a price. **To note these enterprise systems can be acquired for about the same money with much better features and far better reliability and support. (AKA iX Systems FreeNas Mini) As a final note as of this moment we have aprox. 1,300 WD RE4 drives in our main datacenter so don't say we are hating on WD.
@amshermansen7 жыл бұрын
Considering you haven't put a single shred of data on other companies hardware... I shall happily continue to say you are "hating" on WD as it were. Also you're not the only one who works in the industry. Ciao!

well, the little quirk you were running against, is a typical thing you will see when having external storage connected when booting up. your system will try to go through all I/O and check all external drives before booting into windows, this causes extensive boot-up time. I have experienced this since with my C2Q setup. Other than that, I think it's just a 1st world problem. Ever experienced a 15 minute wait for your system to boot up? Besides the point, after your systems has booted, it seems it is running smooth and stable, so all the more reason to neglect the extra boot time. Other than that, loved your review, thanks! I think you can avoid the slow startup time by changing boot order in the BIOS. Also, unless you are only using it as a scratch drive, RAID 0 is a bad idea.

The boot time actually increased more because of whatever motherboard you have, less about the device itself. I experience this problem with my Asus motherboard, so I am generally forced to unplug any USB3 storage plugged in to boot faster, or sometime even at all. My motherboard is even on the latest BIOS, so I it must be some setting on the motherboard itself.

The use case for this is pretty limited. Raid 0 isn't for backups, and with only 2 drive bays the only other option is raid 1, cutting your storage in half. Your also relying on the hardware raid controller in the device, if that fails you need to buy another one to "maybe" recover your data.

I would do 2 drives in a NAS before than both of those options. It's especially more useful if you travel or change/upgrade your PC frequently or even if you want access from multiple devices. In order of preference (for mass storage at least): NAS Internal storage External storage

I literally just got a 4tb My Passport drive in the mail today. I wasn't paying attention though and I already need to backup 4tb of footage! 🤣

Please tell me you have a proper backup solution for that raid 0 config lol

Raid 1 is the best thing to use? Mirror the HD. If 1 HD fails, then the other HD is fine ?

The problem that you have with the prolonged boot has to do with a USB protocol. My Ryzen setup does that same thing. It happens with a few USB devices that I have especially USB 3.0 hubs.

My 4th gen intel system has a similar slowdown if I have an external drive attached but not as bad as yours

As others have said, RAID 0 is prone to data loss. I see this solution as just a "quick fix". You really should consider a proper NAS with ZFS for the file system. FreeNAS comes to mind here, and building your own is fairly straight forward if you do the research. Or, you can just purchase a pre-built system from iXsystems.

A proper backup will not use any raid option (which depends on either pc hardware or enclosure hardware to function and can fail horribly), either use software mirroring or manually copy final storage files to 3 different drives. Create an SFV to check integrity on each drive every 15days/month and if budget allows a one drive/mega/megabackup for your work files like the after effect logs, templates, advertising clips that will be inserted to new videos, etc. If i want an external enclosure, it needs to be a dummy one, power, usb3.0-3.1 + some aluminum for passive dissipation and directly connect to the PC, no software involved.

Nothing wrong with RAID6 for mass storage backup, as long as there are separate copies of the same data in two different locations. Basically; have a working array/drive, then a high availability storage array in RAID10, which is mirrored periodically to a RAID6 array. Not everyone can fit all their storage on a single drive, and separating data into a JBOD would be cumbersome to maintain.

TL;DR: yes, slow boot is caused by the disk being external. I have a friend with relatively fast PC, with ssd boot, and with several external disk boxes as he likes to keep his storage mobile. His machine boots with disks disconnected in less than 30 seconds. With all the disks, several minutes. System first initializes the USB, then checks the box itself, then spins up the disk in the box if box didn't already (some don't), then checks the disk itself and after that continues to the next disk, if there is one. It takes a long time. It might even spin-down disk after post before windows starts to boot if there isn't proper handover, which will delay the boot even further as windows will do another hardware init. External drives aren't exactly nice option because of that in a permanent use. I'd rather put disks inside my case and connect them straight to the motherboard or use some NAS option. In the other hand, if you need the storage on the go or with multiple computers in different networks, then it is very viable option, and with current USB standards, also fast.

And with many boxes, which doesn't do automatic spin-up, you can actually hear system going through them one-by-one

I think it is a pretty cool setup but raid 0 alone is pretty risky. you could set up a raid 10 inside a computer or if they come out with a portable raid 10 4 drive model and would be much safer with your data. if they did a portable 4 10 terabyte raid 10 you would only get a 20 terabyte setup that would be pretty costly.
