its an efficient use of CPU power I have an older octa-core and I can say outside of video or photos editing I never see all 8 cores gets used its always 2 or 3 and their threads then the rest juggle small quick task.

These mini PCs have less core/threads clock speed. You cant do professional video editing, rendering, animation. It is just for short tasks.

Always interested in more efficient low power mini servers. It’s why I run so many Pi’s instead of a big IBM server

How many Pis is "so many Pis"? At some point, surely a single higher power computer that does it all is more power efficient than multiple Pis running at the same time.

It's one of the most similar replicas of NUC, almost an exact clone I believe. - The 4 screws in the bottom with the screws retainer - The openable top lid/cover - Front port configuration (2 usb, mic, power) - The heatsink outlet in the back (the back ports configuration itself is very similar) - Side card reader - 2.5" inch expansion drive stuck on the bottom lid - That quirky SATA cable (though I believe mine is using a thicker cable) - Even I think the component placement inside (RAM, SSD, wifi card) is very similar.

This would be a great addition to my home lab. I already have a substantial NAS. So I could run this as a additional server while using the NAS as accessible network storage. Not to mention 4tb 2.5in ssds are getting pretty dang affordable now. Even one would be good for local storage for any reason.

I upgraded from my m700 tiny (4C4T) to a Trigkey 5800H (8C16T) for 300 GBP brand new from amazon as it was on offer. running a wireguard vpn, proxmox, portainer, pihole, traefik, kasm, navidrome, nextcloud and vaultwarden. currently idling at 7watts with all the above running. These mini PCs are crazy good.

this mini PC is awesome, your use case of assigning VMs to threads is a great real-world use case for them outside of rendering I never really see all my cores get pegged it always ends up being 2 or 3 cores and their threads.

Some workloads are more efficient on P-cores since the task can get done faster and the CPU can go back into a low power state sooner.

It's amazing what capabilities these SBCs and small form factor PCs have. Like.. how much PC do you really need? My gaming PC IDLES at 65 watts. Under load it draws a little over 300 from the wall! Interesting stuff man, thanks!

For stuff that sits idle most of the time my go to is get away with as cpu power as you can get away with. Older multi core multi thread cpus/machines might be cheaper but they just can’t idle low enough. For reference I’ve got coffee lake Lenovo tiny machines that pull as much wattage as a raspberry pi 3/4 yet much more performance.

From what I am thinking Thunderbolt can also be USB4 compatible but USB 4 is only USB 4, However USB 4 now can have display port and USB C monitor connectivity when you have a little P inside a D logo next to them. So while you can't get T4 you could still have a lot more USD 4 connectivity. The new Nuc's are all Thunderbollt/USB 4. I reading up on it as just got a 15" touch while is USB C or thunberbolt. So my phone has Samsung Decs Desktop while work find with the touch but getting it to work on W11 machine I have which has no USB C support via USB old type 3.2 to Type C cable but no picture. So for now it only a 15" connected via HDMI to USB C.

The CPU itself is really interesting and would probably be nice to use in homeservers once it becomes a bit outdated and cheaper, i would personally probably want it in a nice tower case with an atx mobo because i think these small form factor pcs can be useful for some servers its really not practical for a nas given that it only has 1 sata port but for some other uses it could probably work fine, i would still like the upgradability of normal pcs more. Personally I find those weird atx mobos with laptop chips pretty interesting, because of how efficient they are but, its mostly some sketchy mobos from ali express so idk how well that actually works, or they are just itx boards with very little upgradability but i would love to see how good those laptop chips on desktop boards would perform as servers. Btw congratz on the play button!

According to Intel ark, the i7 1270p had a total of 20 PCIe lanes. So putting this on a ATX/uatx sized board is going to be disappointing. The ark page didn't even mention SATA, so that must be from the chipset. I'd really like to see some of these low power CPUs come with 64+ lanes. Even if they only get broken out as sff/u.2 connectors. Given the prices of 2tb nvme ssds, a small all flash Nas isn't a crazy idea.

Very Very Interesting. I do wish they would start using these processors in a NAS form-factor that supports at least 2 x 3.5" drive bays. All the connectors in the world cant replace the need for a place to dock for your hard drives. Currently I find laptops to be a better option than these mini PCs which are effectively headless laptops
@rexsceleratorum1632
@rexsceleratorum1632 11 ай бұрын
They should make it modular, just buy a couple of bays and attach it to the base and you get a NAS. Like a laptop dock. I think the main issue there is sizing the power supply. By which I mean not trusting the customer to get an adequate one, and then complaining.

Could you do a video that goes deeper in the core management of Proxmox? Like you have an N100 with four cores but you can run 6 VMs, including some that are allocated multiple cores? How the fuck does that work? Do you set priority rules etc?

performance of these mini pcs are all alike, depending on cpu inside. the thing that would be nice to know is how are they made. many of these are badly engineered, high noise and temps, dying rather sooner then later. maybe some magnifying glass and check on soldering job and such. that thing is small, but it still costs 600+ $. its a lot for something that could die in a month and their service and return policies are abysmal. and no not just geekom, i mean all these chinese off brands, like minisforum, beelink etc

Cause if u make a system that is supposed to have TB then they wouldn't give such a vague answer. plus they would include tb drivers from factory
