Video shows our trip to Hardwick Old Hall. Hardwick Old Hall is one of the most innovative houses of the Tudor period. Built between 1587 and 1596 by Bess of Hardwick, one of the richest and best-connected women of the Elizabethan age. A radical modern mansion, it drew on the latest Italian innovations in house design. Before the house was completed Bess started work on Hardick Hall situated opposite. The Old Hall was used as guest and servant accomodation. When her heirs moved to Chatsworth the house gradually fell to ruin. Although the Old Hall is in ruin, it remains a magnificent reflection of Bess’s status and aspirations.
The house is owned by the National Trust and administered by English Heritage. Entry is free to English Heritage and National Trust members.
