Here I instal our hardwood stairs using my homemade nose treading from part 1, out of same wood for the floor.

OMG I personally couldn't get past him saying "when you have a woman or a kid come in and mop the floors". Good Lord!!!

That's because if a man did it; it would be redone by a woman or child. So just let them do it in the first place. Thanks for watching.

I don't care for using "flooring" on stair treads BUT I have to say that I think you did a very good job with what you had to work with. It would have been very nice to see how the balusters / spindles were installed. I have to replace all the treads on my spiral staircase and that will most likely involve replacing all of the balusters. All in all, I think you did a pretty nice job!! Thanks for the ideas and the little tricks you incorporated here.

Thank you; sorry for late reply, I had to remove the hand rails and balusters in order to do the job and I use my laser bob to reinstall them.

That first thread the run will be deeper than all of the steps if you go with 3/4 inch hardwood on the riser.
@TheBlueCollarPreacher3 жыл бұрын
This question gets asked a lot; First of all during rough framing the builders build all the stairs as close as they can with in 3/8'', they can not be more than 3/8'' difference from each other see the codes ( buildingcodetrainer.com/residential-stair-code/) Now to set the story straight again for I don't know how many times I explain it. My tile has '' Durarock (cement board) under it, 3/8" thick, my tile is 3/8" thick total 3/4" thick, (main floor) the stairs are made out of 3/4" thick oak hardwood, the upper floor is 3/4" thick hardwood, ALL RISERS ARE THE SAME EQUAL HEIGHT, with no tolerance of greater than 3/8" Please see codes HOW EVER THEY HAVE CHANGED IN 2020 SO PLEASE SEE NEW CODE. upsideinnovations.com/ibc-stairs-code/ As a builder in the trade for more than 40 years, we are always up on the codes. Thanks for watching.

@TheBlueCollarPreacher5 жыл бұрын
#3 is the cheapest, but keep in mind it has it's problems. I explain it in Part 1. I got mine for free, from a Church which it was donated to. #3 has a lot of character that's for sure. Might be able to get it at the Lumber Liquidators.

I have thick oak stairway with spindles built in 1983. The guy who built it did not sand the risers at all, only the treads, and you can clearly see the mill marks after it was stained and polyed. Is it best that I remove the whole thing and sand everything, and restain? Secondly, he never put a stringer against the wall, just butted the treads and risers against the drywall. I hate this whole setup. How do I get the stringer in place knowing it would be difficult to scribe it in since the treads are bullnosed? Just start over pull all the wood and resand everything?

Wow!! It looks beautiful. Great job. How long did you have to wait between polyurethane coat? I also saw it was a quick drying that you used how much quicker was it to dry a d how long do you have to wait before walking on it. We took the carpets off our stairs and looking to stain the beautiful wood it has or cover with engineer wood.
@TheBlueCollarPreacher7 жыл бұрын
It only took over night to walk on it, and we let it dry for a week, and I re sanded it with 320g and green scotch pads, I use a new fine paint brush to dust off before re coating. Thanks.

Nice job and thanks for taking the time to post. Can I ask do you have a recommendation for the stapler? Do you have any trouble driving that staple into the tongue of the hardwood?--thanks
@TheBlueCollarPreacher6 жыл бұрын
I was only able to do the first row, it got in the way towards the back of the risers. I ended up finishing with my 2-1/2 finish gun tow nailing most of the way up, than just picked spots hard to see to finish against the risers. Thanks.
@robertconroy86866 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info--I wonder do you see any downside to using "trim head" screws into the tongue as opposed to nails?
@TheBlueCollarPreacher6 жыл бұрын
Not really, back in the old days they used #8 finish nails and a punch, about the same size as them finish screws. I use finish screws for trim in metal studs, work great.

@TheBlueCollarPreacher6 жыл бұрын
Only if you leave the floor carpet, we installed tile, on top of 1/2" DuraRock. (cement board) bringing it to about 7/8'', while the hardwood is 3/4'' it's only about an 1/8'' difference which is legal. Even if you leave carpet on the main floor or upstairs it still has 1/2'' pad and the carpet to make up for it. Now codes broken here.

As a professional flooring guy i can tell you that you can do a much better job buying a good quality products and get it done faster. This guy doesn't use professional tools and just looking for a cheap job. What he did not mention is that this way will take three times longer and about the same cost if you buy all the right products from a reputable flooring company.
