Hare And Copper: Fly Tying Step by Step

If there is one fly I would recommend for the beginner when it comes to starting to tie flies it is the Hare and Copper (H&C). It teaches a lot of the basics required to start tying flies from proportions to the application of different materials and wrapping them onto a hook. Not only that but it just catches fish so well! Not only here in New Zealand but all over the world.
I am not quite sure on the origin of this nymph but have heard stories that it came to be as simplified version of the Hares Ear nymph when there was not quite the right materials available. Regardless of how it ended up coming into existence I do not know of a kiwi who has not got a few in their fly box or who has not fished one at some point and time!

It's a great way to go mixing up the colours as can tick the box for so many things. Rough them up and tie them clean and tight as well. Cheers and enjoy

Great fly. Hares ear without wing case. Oldtimers in NE US use to tie it this way. If I could have only 1 fly, it would be this fly with or without a wing case. Thanks

Nice. Any reason for using waxed thread over nano silk?

Cheers - there are a lot of articles out there that go into this deeper than I can here but for me personally I love nano for smaller patterns or in larger sizes of thread for salty stuff. But in between I personally don't think it matters either way. I like the bigger waxed thread for this as was building some underbody on a larger hook. But have found can do the same with nano just takes a bit longer due to it being that fine gsp thread. Semperflis waxed threads are fantastic as well and tbh I just enjoy using them as well. That being said their waxed thread goes down to 18/0 (30d) as well and is mighty fine for small trout flies as well just not quite as strong or fine.

Cool, thanks for that. I'm a fan of the nano silk as to don't tend to break it, but I get what your saying on trying to build a body.

@@haydenstewart1659 it's fantastic stuff nano. I love it for small thread body nymphs which I find work really well here in Wellington. There's a video on them esrlier on my channel if interested. It's a great thread for sure.
