Thank you for this User guide video. I am new to investment. And since one of my friend mentioned it like 15 years ago I thought I will give HL a go. I read all the useful information on their website but still not able to start investing yet. I don't understand most of the terms and still reading around to understand them and really needed "how to" and found your video very helpful. But again at the end I don't have a clue what I am investing in. Will read around and watch your videos more. The videos made it more easier than reading. Many thanks!

How do you calculate your monthly interest / dividend payments based on the dividend or distribution yield of the fund?
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gracie - so if a dividend yield is 5% - that means that every year you'll make 5% of your total investment in dividends. £100 invested would give you £5 per year - which is typically paid 2-4 times per year, e.g. £2.50 every 6 months or £1.25 every 3 months. Bear in mind that dividend yields can change all the time :)
@noodlebrains

What doe's it mean when you say you can have as many Stocks and Shares ISA's as you want but you can only contribute to one in any financial year? Does it mean that if I open one ISA with Iweb today and add funds to it, I can not open another with Hargreaves and Landsdown tomorrow and add funds to that?
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul that’s correct. You could open multiple accounts across multiple years but each year you can only contribute to a single one. (New tax year starts in April then it resets obviously) does that help? Thanks for watching

As usual, great presentation! Couple of things about HL - don’t, blindly, follow their share tips and their, in-house, “HL” funds are - from when I’ve checked - very expensive for fees and very poor performers - not a good advert for their financial advisers!!!

Hi Toby, as costs eat into our overall results I think you could mention that if you invest monthly into your isa like I do you don't pay the £11.95 you pay a reduced £1.50 . It makes a lot of difference over the long term . This month for example I put £1500 into RKT for £1.50 plus stamp duty.

For HL, it needs to be noted that their app does not possess all the functionality available through logging into your account via their website. The app is very handy as a “mobile” tool but you get more from the website. A couple of years ago they removed “broker comments” from shares, with the comment that they would be replacing these but they never have.

Thanks again Michael. The app could definitely be improved compared to what else is now out there on the market for sure 👍

Hi Toby, could you explain a bit more about the tax centre? You mentioned the self-assessment tax return. Am I right believing thats when you are self-employed? How does this apply in HL? Are all users subject to paying tax? New to this!
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi HK, good question. The tax section is only for individuals who need it - HL do not deal with any taxes for you this is between you and HMRC. Most people won't ever have to get involved here, remember that if you use a stocks and shares ISA there are no capital gains or dividend taxes to pay. Secondly, if you were using a normal fund and share account, you still have your annual allowances from the government - £12,300 for capital gains and £2000 for dividends. So lets say for some reason you make £10,000 in dividends in a normal account - at that point you do need to make sure that you submit that to HMRC through a self assessment portal - which is also something self employed people have to do yes. But in summary - I am no tax expert but the tax centre gives you or your accountant all the information you need SHOULD you have to pay any taxes.

Great video mate! You’ve covered so much ground succinctly. Can I ask a question please- can I invest in multiple funds and shares within a stocks and shares ISA account in the same tax year? For example, can I invest £1k each in say BP, GSK, Astra, Barclays and Anglo-American, in the same tax year? Or am I only allowed to make one single investment in a tax year?
@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ram, once you have a stocks and shares ISA opened, you can invest inside of it whatever you like, as many or as few funds, etfs, or shares that you like. Whatever your platform allows you to do. it's only the contribution thats limited of £20k across your ISAs, not whats inside them, thats on you. Good luck!

@TobyNewbatt
@TobyNewbatt 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Leslie, ISA rules apply to all the different types of ISA as far as I am aware, i.e. you can only contribute to one per tax year - but you can have one of each - Stocks and Shares, Cash, Lifetime and Innovative Finance. Lifetime has a £4k maximum FYI, and you have to use it for retirement or first time house buying otherwise you wont get the government top up. Hope that helps, check the gov website to make sure that's correct.

I did a review on the best ISAs a few months back. Not done an in depth one into Barclays specifically, I do know some people who use them and seem fine - but IMO there are cheaper and 'better' ones out there. On your other comment - glad to hear you were a regular direct debit investor on HL thats one way to keep your fees low. However you still need to pay attention to the account fee. 0.45% is a lot of money over time if you are investing in funds. Shares less so, but still worth keeping an eye on
