A good investment bet if anyone is interested is oil futures. The price of oil is at record lows right now almost. This is due to the sanctions on Russia. It’s a great time to invest because as soon as the war is over oil will jump back up to its normal price and then we can finally see the price at the pump drop (if the petrol stations and companies that produce petrol don’t get too greedy)

Hello Toby, and thanks for the videos, So nice to find someone with good knowledge happy to share with no dog in the fight so as impartial and honest as you can get. You've got me inspired although a bit late to the game. I have a couple of dumd ass questions not sure if here's the right place but here goes. I'm 56 no mortgage with 10k to invest for ten to maybe 15 years, I'm pretty sure global index linked in an ISA is the way forward for me so my question is, you said I can have multiple accounts so is that multiple indexes in one ISA or do I need multiple ISA's. And do you have to do lump sum or regular payments or can you lump sum and then top up. Forgive if here's not the right place to ask. Anyway loving the vids off to watch more. Thaks for all the good info and myth busting

One part that wasn't discussed.... for example, I live in the UK, if i invest into the vanguard S&P 500 stock over 20 years, when i pull that money out, do i lose any/pay any tax on this? Or is the amount in that investment, the exact amount i will get back?
@TobyNewbatt Жыл бұрын
Hi Asher, two things here to help you: 1. As long as you use a stocks and shares ISA there is no dividend or capital gains tax to pay when you sell. 2. If you sell all at once just bear in mind that the exchange rates at the time could have an impact, might be good, might be bad who knows! There's no 'tax' from the US side if thats what you were hinting at

Quick questions about etf: I believe they are actively managed, so if one of the companies from one etf gets demoted, what happens to our next investment in that same etf? Is that company not being part of the investment? It will however continue in past investments that we've done? Thanks
@edulanzas2 күн бұрын
Thank you for your videos. Very helpful
@TobyNewbattКүн бұрын
The ETFs I speak about are passively managed. There are some ETFs that are actively managed. For passive ETFs, like I speak about there is no management involved. If a company falls out of the index, if it goes bankrupt for example, it will be replaced by another. The index is weighted by market cap, so it will get rebalanced. The value of your investment is tied to the value of all of the companies tied together in the ETF. Every time you make an investment, you are buying into the weights at that specific time.

Hi, yes you can open and contribute to one of each kind of ISA. So you can have a Cash ISA, a Stocks and Shares ISA, a Lifetime ISA all at the same time and at the same OR different providers. thats up to you. But you can only contribute to one of them per tax year and the maximum limit across all of them is £20,000 hope that makes sense!

@@TobyNewbatt Hi Toby, I've done a bit of research on this and it looks like you can contribute to multiple different ISAs in the same tax year, but you just can't exceed £20,000 total?
@TobyNewbatt Жыл бұрын
@@TheChewyleaf yes. But not the same kind of ISA. You cannot open two stocks and shares ISAs and put money into both in the same tax year. The rules are that the £20k limit is across all of the different accounts. E.g one tax year you could put £10k into a stocks and shares isa and £10k into a cash isa then that’s your limit used up.

Great video! So do we open an investment isa and then use that account details to buy funds? (Like using your debit card for a Tesco shop, any refunds go back onto the card used) Or does the account automatically do it for you? (Open and isa and leave it, just put more money in per month) When you get interest on investments, does this go back into your bank account or is it added onto the investment (compound investment)? Thanks!
@TobyNewbatt Жыл бұрын
Hi Ruby, so a stocks and shares ISA is just the type of account. Once you have that opened you can deposit cash into it and then with that cash you can choose your investments. When you say ‘interest’ from investments I presume you might mean dividends which can happen. You can reinvest those, or some investment funds automatically reinvest depending on their type. Worth having a look at some of my other vids thanks for watching! 👍

Nope start again :) £20k is the limit that you can PUT IN each tax year across all of your ISA accounts. For example, you can put £20k of NEW MONEY into a stocks and shares ISA. And that's the limit for the tax year and you have to wait until April 6th for it to reset. That £20k can then be invested however you like. There is NO LIMIT on how much it can grow to. It could end up being £1m if you picked some crazy stock. ANY GAINS or ANY DIVIDENDS are all tax free, there is no amount or limit. You can take money out whenever you like. @@maxsteven2659

This probally sounds daft but when calculating over the long term there’s a lot of talk about compound interest. Stocks and shares don’t pay interest so is this 10% per year based on the value of your shares increasing 10% per year. If so how does that compound? It’s got my head in a bit of a spin trying to work it out 😅
@TobyNewbatt Жыл бұрын
I know it sounds mad John! But the compounding works based on the share price. Let’s say the stock market did do 10% a year on average. Share value at the first year would be £10, next year the value is £11 because the stock market is valued higher. And so on etc. now obviously the market is a lot more up and down than that but the point stands that as you build up a larger pot and the shares are worth more there is your compounding in action. Hope that helps, i know exactly what you mean though 😂

Hey Toby! Can you send me a link for your compound interest calculator? I'm trying to work out where depositing an initial £500, followed by £250 (+5%) per month for the next 30 years would leave me! Assuming 7% gain. Cheers!

@@TobyNewbatt Cheers mate, is 2.5%+ more realistic? The figures start looking silly from year 15 onwards 😅 And do you think even 6% growth is realistic for S&P 500? New subscriber by the way! 🍻

Wow! I am sooooo glad I stumbled upon you, Tony! You break everything down and alleviate many of my concerns and fears. Green investing...what do you think? S&P 500 ESG Index? Thank you....

Thanks for the kind words. Personally I find ESG a bit meh…it doesn’t really address the key issues in my view so I’d stick to the regular S&P 500

@@TobyNewbatt @Toby Newbatt That's an interesting view.. Why do you not think that it addresses key issues? I am so new to this that I really would love to understand? Surely eliminating the less desirable and less green companies from an investment is better morally? I'd read that the ESG 500 had performed well comparatively?

Thank you so much for such a clear & well presented knowledge. I really would like to Invest in Index Funds, but is there an ethical option regarding animal welfare? I'm a vegan, & it would go against my principles if I invested in a company that were connected to animal agriculture or animal testing.

Tough one that Steve there are ESG funds but I’m not sure they would screen for animal welfare I could be wrong good subject for another video

Toby, what are your thoughts on the HL managed funds, set according to risk levels. I’m a new investor and this seems the most straight forward way, at least for now.
@TobyNewbatt Жыл бұрын
Hey Luke, I think HL are a solid, safe name with great service. But the managed funds are very pricey in my opinion, the total costs are around 1.3% if I'm not mistaken, and I think thats way too much.
