Thanks for sharing! I found this after singing it for our choir and I actually prefer this more solemn approach to the piece. The blending, the diction, and phrasing are all top-notch. Special call out given to that tenor response to the baritone solo, wowsa!

Amazing. Best recording I've heard of this song and one of my favorite choral pieces. Glad I was exposed to it in high school and got to sing it with a great choir then. Every technique and style choice amazes me with their performance.

Heard this concert live in Pasadena. Wonderful! Thank you for posting. This song was especially sweet since it is one of my all time fav's, and I'd sung it in the Ole Choir when I was there.

Anton Armstrong and the choir work very hard and it shows in this performance. I would love to hear them live sometime. My only suggestion is to use a sound board and several Heil microphones to record so that it is not over modulated when the sopranos hit the high notes.

I had the pleasure of performing this with Parker conducting. She preferred a much slower tempo. It better suits the text, in my opinion.

Robert Shaw does a slower tempo as well.

Are the choristers swaying?

Terrill White You really can’t help it while singing this piece!

Well...They are TRYING to do it...But as with most "White" choirs, they can't do it rightly... They should be swaying together-same direction, same time... Get a good "Black" Gospel choir singing most anything and you'll see it done right!! But at least they are NOT stamping their feet on the last chorus... Someone other than Alice Parker added that...but like a staph-infection it has spread and I've seen/heard it done in renditions of the Parker arrangement... Ick!!
@gretchenpritchard47786 жыл бұрын
@@jsn9573 I doubt they are "trying" to sway; probably trying not to, but involuntarily doing it anyway.
@jsn95736 жыл бұрын
Spurred on by your comment (Thank you...) I revisited the video... You may be correct... And if so, isn't that interesting? A DEEP "natural" human response to music...breaking through the convention and finding expression... That being said, I got quite seasick in six seconds paying close attention... I'll have to look at it more!

From what I understand, St. Olaf Choir is known to hold hands while performing, and that creates a bit of a sway as people move a bit naturally, making others move as well.
