A couple examples of Harley Benton B-Stock guitars.
One was discounted about 6% the other about 18%. I'm interested in discovering a correlation between the decrease in quality vs. discount. Please share your B-Stock stories in the comments so that we can gather info and make better informed decisions regarding purchasing B-Stock guitars.
Spoiler Alert! (below)
Unboxing the following two guitars:
Harley Benton TE-62DB BK
Harley Benton SC-DLX Gotoh Shell Pink
(both great guitars by the way!)
The SC-DLX was pretty much flawless. Probably just a return that they couldn't sell as "new".
The TE-62DB had one inch long surface scratch in the finish. But the big problem was with the pots/electronics. They do work, but they won't for long. I took off the plate (not in video) and discovered that both the volume and tone knobs/pots were basically just hanging in there. If you turned one, the other would turn (due to the connecting wire). So that I think is why it was more heavily discounted.

I learned how to mod guitars during Covid. There really isn't much to it. Harley Benton is so inexpensive you can put new pots and switches and still not have a lot into the guitars. I also find it a fun new hobby.

Last Christmas, my son got me a Harley Benton Lp Special with one p90 pickup covered in sparkling silver! It was b-stock without very little defects. It is very amazing and beautiful! There are small imperfections on the side of the fretboard and silver finish on the body. They are hardly noticeable at all. I put Wilkerson vintage mint-green tuners on it. I will never part with it because it’s one of a kind. The silver also goes all the way up the back of neck and on the front and back of the headstock. Amazing! Great video.

In the beginning most Harley Benton guitars were B-stock ;-), there was always something to improve upon. Low quality pots, average pickups, finish quality issues with laquer or frets, tuners. But now with the Gotoh hardware, stainless steel frets and decent pickups they really upped their game.

@@braddinsmore2696 Dude I received the Black Satin SC-1000 VB Progressive, yesterday, it is perfect actually, except for a chipped on the left corner of the headstock, not so small honestly, however after two hours of playing the guitar the idea of sending it back disappeared from my mind, the HBZ humbuckers sounds very good and the fretboard is great to play metal as well, so considering the price including the shipping and the custom charge still a great option.

I've been buying and selling Harley Bentons for about 2 years now (not professionally, I just like trying out different models) and I've encountered a lot of different B stocks. Mostly its just light to medium cosmetic damage, like blemishes, paint chips, small dings from shipping, but there were a few cases where the light damage was hiding bigger problems like cracks in the wood or electronic damage. On one particular P bass, the truss rod was broken so I couldn't set it up properly.

I just purchased a bunch of wall hangers, so I can eventually do the same thing, not only is it more inspiring to see your collection,it makes it easier,to just grab the flavor you need when recording, plus it helps me justify, why I have so many guitars, you can have two guitars exactly alike, and they will sound or play differently,if your playing cover tunes,it helps to have the type of guitar, that the original music was recorded with,,it's hard to make a strat sound like a les paul, and vise versa, working on guitars can be a fun hobby, and I believe everyone that plays, should know how to work on their own guitars.

Hi, as far as I was told, B-stock is simply a product that has been returned for sometimes no particular reason. Thomann has a 30 day return policy so if you buy a guitar or any product and you don’t like it, you return it, but it must be fully functional, so they inspect and you get your money back and this becomes the B-stock. So when I returned a tremolo because I found out it doesn’t fit into my guitar, it wasn’t even touched, but then it became a B-stock. With guitars, I guess someone buys the guitar, plays it for a while and returns it, but then they can sell it only as a B-stock. And regardless of being a Bock even from perfectly new Harley Benton, you cannot expect flawless guitars. Even in the highest price range there are loads and loads of flaws and even if they upgrade the hardware the electronics is always the weak spot so replacing any internal wiring and pots is basically a must if you want and really good sounding guitar.

I've bought a few different B-Stock Harley Benton guitars from Thomann over the years. I've never had one that i wanted to send back. Usually i couldn't see any reason for being a B-Stock. I'm a HB fan and i own or have owned very expensive American made guitars. We need to get over having to own 'name brands' and instead buy and play excellent and great value instruments. My lastest purchase from Thomann is a B-Stock Squier Affinity Telecaster Deluxe. It hasn't arrived as yet, but shouldn't be too far away. I'm more than happy to own and play cheaper, but good quality instruments. When i started playing guitar 55+ years ago, cheaper guitars were just that: Rubbish. That's no longer the case.

I also got another b-stocks Harley Benton that was pretty much flawless, but I suspect it was returned due to it's weight - it was pretty heavy. Thanks! Yeah, the pink SC-DLX was perfect. Even the "blemishes" I thought I saw when first unboxing it turned out to be handling smudges and basically disappeared when I touched them. I have no idea why someone would return that one. The TE-62DB was returned too, but with an understandable reason. I'd like to know if they try to fix before sending back out as B-Stock. My guess is that they don't based on the TE-62DB. It may not be worth it to them. But they should, it would have been an easy fix. Now it's my easy fix. Thanks for your insight! And for watching!

@@braddinsmore2696 People actually buy guitars from Thomann because that allows them to try them at home, and send them back if for some reason you don't like the model, neck, colour etc. That is the business modell of Thomann and the bad thing is that people really order guitars so they can return them. The TE62 DB is one of the bargains of the decade, even at full retail. I paid £139 ($177) delivered and it's by far my favourite T style guitar. The only B-Stock I've purchased was a left handed HB35 Plus for my son at £173 ($220) and it is flawless - no idea why it was deemed B Stock. I own three other HB guitars....2 SC 450 Plus Vintage single cut LP copies (one in Lemon Drop and one in Vintage Burst), both of which are brilliant both to look at and to play and a JB-75MN Bass in Sunburst which is also my son's. I know nothing about basses but my son's teacher, who owns a ridiculous number of high end modern and vintage Fender guitars and who plays a Fender Jazz bass picked it up and was astonished at the quality of the instrument, just as he has been with all of our HB models. In fact the single cut models have him wanting to buy a Les Paul style axe for the first time in his life. All anecdotal I know, but I've yet to have a bad experience buying HB guitars from Thomann and the value for money is indisputable especially since we enjoy free shipping on our side of the Pond.

Some time ago I bought a b-stock acoustic bass from Harley Benton. The price was quite low compared to non b-stock model, so I was expecting that I might be returning the thing back. When the bass arrived I was surprised to find just a single dent and quite rough fret job (but that was not probably why it was b-stock?), otherwise the bass was very good. What was the main reason for it being b-stock (and so cheap), was probably the fact that the E string was very quiet when played through the amp. Which, in fact, was quite easy fix as the culprit was just misplaced piezo pickup under the bridge saddle. Slight adjustment to its position solved the issue and now the bass plays reeeally great! I can't be happier. It has become my most frequently played instrument since then. I mean, it's not without any risks, but if you don't mind having some unintended "relicing", take the b-stock :)

First experience with HB was pretty good. Bought two of their inexpensive guitars. My only problem was they weren't packaged well for how UPS handles them during shipping. Both came with minor shipping damage and with a few pictures and emails, HB refunded me $35 on each guitar. The next guitar I wanted from them was no longer being produced (EX- 84 EMG), so the only way to get one was to buy a B stock version. It was about $70 less than the normal guitar, so I was really expecting a pretty crappy guitar. It arrived with no damage from shipping. 🙏 It does have a couple finish issues and the tailpiece stud that wasn't completely seated in the body. A few adjustments later and it's almost perfect. 💕

Thanks for the video, I've often wondered about the HB "b stock". I own a few HB guitars, and they're usually pukka. I've had guitars from national retailers at full price with annoying faults that I rectified myself rather than have the aggro of a return. HB are reputed to have a good returns system. Sometimes you can get an amazing value and I think sometimes paying $20 more to get a regular stock "blemish free" or closer to blemish free is worth it. Also b stock can be good if you can fix things yourself. The cool thing with the Fusion 3 is that the parts alone may be worth the b stock price. Best luck to you on whatever you decide!

@@braddinsmore2696 The model was discontinued within a year. I think not too many were made. It has a basic design flaw in that the Tune-o-matic bridge limits the angle at which it can be mounted, which forces a sharper angle at the nut. That sharp angle makes playing the lowest fret somewhat less than comfortable. But the thinner body and longer scale make for a well balanced guitar and the neck is Wizard thin. The TE-7 (also discontinued) had a softer angle at the nut, thanks to a monorail bridge.

Hard to say! I was really interested in those HB-35s myself but I heard a lot of mixed reviews regarding QC for regular stock. I would not expect it to be perfect at all. You're lucky. I oprdered my first HB and it did show up fast, but the box was ALL tore up. I got right from the UPS guy, so I know it wasn't sitting outside. There was minimal packing inside as well. I ordered a B stock as well, and so far I don't see any chips or cracks etc. I got the Fusion III in purple, with the HH and Floyd Rose. The finish isn't quite as dark as in the photos, but it still looks pretty sweet and there's no gap in the veneer bookmatch, which is what I was worried about. Probably saved $75 on the B stock. As far as the knobs, I got the same ones, and one had fallen off in the box, but the other was tightened without being lifted off the body even just a hair, so it was hard to turn. Try removing yours (just need a small allen wrench) raise the knob off the body a bit and tighten it down. Should fix it.

Have you tried to put some nut lube on the tuners? I bet that’ll get them moving better! Is the Tele a 25.5” or 24.75”? You should be able to get the guitar replaced. The issue with the pots is more than cosmetic and was not disclosed before purchasing the guitar. You’re not saving much of anything if you have to buy parts and make repairs yourself, right? So I’d say either get them to make an even exchange . . . or see if they’ll send you free parts to make the repair yourself and offer you a discount on the pickups you want for the inconvenience. They’ll likely love the latter option because it’s cheaper to ship those parts and take a small loss instead of paying return shipping and sending a new guitar. Then everyone would be happy! 😉

Having rejected 3 Harley Benton CST24's for various defects, i am probably a creator of their B stock guitars. At the prices they charge i can live with and correct poor setups and cheap hardware, but not cosmetic issues. The cost of refinshing a guitar that meets my very high standards is just not worth the stress and expense of buying someones reject. Thomann refused to send me any more CST24's, so i waited until a mint unplayed one appeared on Reverb, so they do make some good samples, but far too many bad ones. Re Parcel Force are well named, there are no good couriers these days, we have many problems with all of them at work. Great to hear that you are happy with your 2nd Artist LP 59, i was the same with my HB Fusion 2, all it needed was a basic setup, so they are capable of making good samples. Hey Darren, it depends. I've used different types for different jobs/reasons. The first one I did was with enamel paint, like you'd use on model cars, etc. Spray paints work well. Acrylic paints can work too, but you'll want to seal it. The main tip would be to paint "flat." Try not to have texture in the brush strokes. Then space a sealer over it to protect. Hope that helps! The biggest problem with HB guitars is their hit or miss QC. You can get a gem or a real dud and a hell of a lot in between. Thomann/HB have a policy of you can return it if not happy and I have found their customer service to be good - no complaints there. This is why they have a lot of B-stock guitars: people buy em, try em and return quite a few of em for various reasons. I bought two A-stock guitars that I consider to be B-stock but the physical issues were easy to fix and the blemishes were minor. Thomann did refund me £20 on the one that had the worst issues. I'm in the UK/Europe so returning is less of a hassle and quicker than if you are in the US or Canada - plus you guys get hammered on import duty and State taxes reducing the low cost value of HB guitars. By the way, don't expect much resale value on any HB guitar no matter how good it might be! In short, if I lived in North America I would not buy Harly Benton from Thomann in Germany but I'm ok with buying from them from the UK. I had to return a duff new Blackstar amp to them as well and the refund took about two and a half weeks from day of return.

Somehow...they seems to have a lot B-stock of any brand, never had anything but B-C-D from (yes) but most people seems to be happy anyway I know because I was able to sell them quick fixed severly faulty ones with some profit on the top.

I've had good experiences and bad experiences, their premium(gotoh/SC550/fusion/dullahan/etc) are always great, the others? not so much.

I just bought a Harley Benton Fusion Tele, I adore the specs but there were some smudges and knicks in the finish upon arrival. Little irritating since I didn’t order a B-stock, and after emailing them back and forth(with pictures provided) and they informed me that at the $300 price point it’s acceptable to have those flaws in a brand new instrument. I can return it but that’s a whole fiasco and it breaks my heart since everything else I’ve bought from them has been fantastic. Feels like I’m getting the shaft, they won’t even let me exchange it for the same model. Since it “could possibly have the same defects” So I guess take Harley Benton/Thomann’s customer service with a large grain of salt. Maybe everyone blow up their social medias and make them correct these sorts of policies.

Thanks for sharing Marcus. Sorry to hear about your experience. Depending on how bad the blemishes are and how much they bother you, you might just return and ask for a full refund. I have a fusion T-HH that is pretty good. It's about 98% perfect. For me it works. Can't get anything close for the money, so a couple finishing things and a little personality it's a keeper. Thanks again for sharing! It's good to know.

I think you're being a bit unreasonable. At that price, you should/could expect a slight defect or not 100% paint finish. I have bought a few B stocks and A stocks. For the price, I think it's more than okay. I just don't get the hangup on "Flawless Finish". Is it a show piece or a musical instrument for making/playing music? If its a showpiece, low end, made in China shipped semi-direct is probably not going to satisfy, nor should it come as a surprise especially not for "blowing them out on Social Media", If I see that, I tend to think the issue is the end user and not the supplier (within reason of course).........Each to their own I guess.

Someone probably returned the single cut because they didn't like the color after receiving it.

I think you're right. It's really light for "shell pink." But a really nice color actually. I suspect that it will fade and change more over the years and eventually almost look off white - which would be cool.

99% of the time I buy the b stock and out of 5 guitars only one had a blemish and that was the dc junior in blue and it had 2 or 3 tiny black spots on it..

That's awesome. 5 for 5! That's hard for A-stock. I was tempted by the DC jr's too. I like a thicker neck. If I end up selling my guitar with p90s I will get one of those to replace it. Thanks!

@@braddinsmore2696 it's a fantastic guitar and one of my favourites at the moment. It's got a nice neck to be honest and not that far off my Gibson just a little slimmer towards the nut but it gets nice towards the middle. The pickup is nice and clear and loves a bit of overdrive. I did add a shim to it tho because it's so far away from the strings compared to my Gibson so added 4mm shim and that brought it to life!

Very true. Now those are B-stocks. Guitars under $300-400 new are pretty much always going to have QC issues. Some great. Most pretty good. Some bad. And a few absolutely terrible.

Thanks Nigel! That makes sense. It's funny to see certain colors reduce the price while it's still a current model. I think the Shell Pink SC-DLX is one of the best values at Thomann.
