I started riding back in my college days, mid 60s, on a 250cc Yamaha that was not much over 300 pounds fueled. It was many years later that I finally bought a bagger. I owned that 900 pound tourer for a decade. During that time, I also averaged 7K to 10K miles per year with several multi-day/week trips each year. In truth, the bike was a pleasure out on the highway, but was far less enjoyable for quick rides around town or even for a day's outing. After I retired, I downsized to my Softail. With bags, windshield, pillion, sissy bar and luggage rack, it still weighs in under 700 pounds and is a joy to ride: for an hour, a day, or a week. I understand the purpose of the big touring rigs, but I also believe the versatility of their lighter little brothers goes widely under appreciated. Your son will love his Dyna - to quote my all-time favorite QB : "I guarantee it!"

It’s a great “first bike” for your son. Plus, he wanted it and that’s what really matters. He’s going to be cruising with his Pop - nothing better. On another note, you might consider putting down an old trash bag on that beautiful driveway before you mess with the chain. That crap will ruin the beauty of the layout and momma will not be happy 😂🤜🏼

Dyna is a great bike. My 1st harley was a wide glide and loved it. I bought a Road King shorty after as started getting into big cross coutry road trips. It would be nice to have both!

I'm 6:3 and haven't had a bike in 10 years. I need something I can commute to work and travel on. I was thinking a street or road glide. I really don't wanna get something to small for my long frame.

It's too bad Harley doesn't put center stands on their bikes. I love the center stand on mine, and it makes chain maintenance easy, without those lifts and dolleys. But, to each his own. Love that KTM.👍🏾

I was riding a Panhead with a tank shift @ 15. I forgot to put the kickstand down once in a parking lot and pick it right up, I was so embarrassed I could have picked up a truck. I also forgot to retard the timing once and it almost kicked me over the bars. I will never forget the smell of it when it backfired through the air cleaner while cranking, love that smell...

I think the Shadow is THE starter bike for anyone who wants a cruiser. Easy ride, easy maintenance. And a Dyna is a perfect first Harley. I def wouldn’t want to have to learn to handle a big bagger on a college campus. Great choice for Cam!

When i was 13(1993) i got a 89 Honda Helix. By the time i turned 16 i had a 86 v65 magna. Rode that bike til i graduated highschool then when i was in college i got a 92 katana 750. I graduated college in 2002 got a 2000 Hayabusa. A "beginner" bike is different for everyone.

The Dyna is a great bike for your son! My first Harley was a 2009 Super Glide Custom and I loved it! Consider upgrading the cam chain tensioners…’07 and earlier notorious for going bad!

Years ago, when my daughter's boy friend told me he was getting his 1st motorcycle. Then he told me it would be a 2008 Yamaha Stratoliner 1900(if you don't know, this bike is a big 1900cc V-Twin bagger, similar to a Road King). I thought it was strange a 20 year old would want a bagger but he was set on getting the bike. The kid was built like Cam, but I still was concerned for him starting off with so much weight and power... But he did great on the bike and in a few months he was packing up and taking multi day tours with me.

Your son will enjoy a dyna more than a bagger. Baggers are fun but he is young he has time to grow into a bagger. Or wait until he does long trips. I had a 1200 sporty for 1 1/2 years went on a 700 mile ride one way. Came back and bought a bagger 😂
