Harley-Davidson Dealer Fees are Out of Control (Don't Get Sucked In)

Harley-Davidson dealer fees will ruin the perfect bike, the advertised price may look good but when you sit down to do the paper work the price jumps dramatically. You shouldn't be paying a ridiculous amount on top of your Harley-Davidson motorcycle purchase especially if it's used. Sometimes you can't help that your perfect used Harley is the hands of Harley-Davidson dealer, but there are some things you can do. If the Harley dealer is trying to add on dealer fees, call them out and ask a ton of questions.
You might be able to get them waived, if not the hardest thing to do is walk away from the perfect bike.

That's what I like right there, I get the prep fee and whatever but just tell me the price and I will decide from there if it's fair to me for what it is. My dad was in sales for 30 years and worked at dealer like that once, he loved it from the salesman's point of view. It made his job easier and the customers really seemed to like it, that concept needs to come back.

The toughest part about getting the “right” deal at the time and place you want it is having the discipline to be willing to walk away. If you can’t get what you want, at the price point you think is fair and honest, you have to be willing to find it at another dealer or at another time. Just walk away.

I was looking at a used road king a couple years ago and the dealership wanted to tack on an $800 prep fee, which they add on to all used bikes. I asked what it was for. They said that fee is their average cost to get a trade in ready to go so oil change, new tires, etc. I took my trade back the next week to see if we could work out a deal. They looked at my trade and gave me a fair figure to start then noting it needed tires, oil change and state inspection, started taking the cost of those off the trade value. I asked if they were gonna charge the next guy the $800 fee when they sold my trade. They said they would. Essentially they were double dipping. I politely told the salesman they were trying to screw me and I won’t do business with them.

I had the exact same experience at Conrad, Harley, Davidson, in Illinois. I refused to pay their safety fee on the used bike and then they tried to take away from my trade-in and I told him the same thing and then you’re going to have the new owner pay it too you’re like the government taxing us twice . Worst thing is that every person there acted like they had a attitude then and didn’t even care about us as a customer. I ended up going and buying a brand new bike at Illinois Harley but with outrageous high prep fee, but to justify that I got him to throw on a sissy bar and labor for nothing. I spent hours haggling at dealerships and still felt like I got ripped off, but maybe did a little less for doing so.

Buying my first and only harley, I knew there would be a learning curve. It was an ok experience. In the end, I didn't feel like they earned my repeat business. The accessory parts sales experience sucked! Plus, during the warranty, I've had them service my bike 3 times for over $500 each. I thought It was getting the full service inspection. Used bikes are big business. I worked for a dealer and I would watch private seller ads. Bikes would sit and sit, someone would be asking $7500 (USD) and I would get cash from the owner go and pull out 5K in cash. Say I work for a dealer, I want the bike and put the cash on seat. We got it for 5 and put it out front $9995, come off 500 bucks to makes someone feel like they got a deal. Still got about 4500 profit on it, that's the inside on a dealer.

I was looking at a used bike at what used to be Ray Price HD in Raleigh, N.C. several years ago. A salesman came up with all the usual talk and I told him flat out I was not able to buy, I was just looking. He asked if I wanted to take the bike for a test ride. Well, sure. I'll take a ride whenever I get the chance. Rode it and when I came back he wanted to talk some more. Well, it wasn't a "talk" it was a hardcore sales pitch. The man was very aggressive. I could hardly get a word in edgewise. This sort of thing turns me off and especially did so since I told him I was not in a position to buy right up front. One thing I noticed, in all his fast talking, was that he was going to charge me a shipping fee. On a used bike? No way! I reminded him that I had told him I wasn't looking to buy and then he acted all upset, pretty much said I had wasted his time. I felt like if anyone's time was wasted, it was my own. He said he had motorcycles to sell, which meant he was pretty much done talking to me. I told him good luck with that, a comment he didn't seem to like at all. I started to find the manager and see what he thought of what had gone down. Then I thought, why bother? This guy is his own worse enemy. I checked back by a few weeks later and he no longer worked there. Wonder why?

No extended warranty ever for me. It's a rip off even if I didn't invalidate it in the first 1K miles by modification. Buy the thing, do NOT finance it for any more than it's worth and own it. Screw the HD dealers. They're(in general) thieves. If you need to finance a motorcycle for more than a year, think again before signing a debt note for it. It is a losing proposition. You don't really own it and you're gonna get burned. BTW, if "Eag;eMark" financing appears on your credit report, count on losing 50 or so points. They're considered a consumer finance company for high-risk borrowers. Do it through your own bank and stay away from HD dealer financing.

I would honestly say Harley's financing is pretty predatory for some people. You can easily end up paying for that bike 3 times over in interest if you ever do pay it off. You can tell when someone is trying to selling a CVO for more or close to the price of new. Buyer's remorse is a real deal.

First off, realize the salesperson and other dealership personnel are not your new friends. As soon as you leave they will forget your existence. Second, vote with your feet and walk out. They will call you (and act like your new friend) to come back in to the dealership. Third, the finance department personnel are not to be trusted. Say “No” to everything they ask you. Have your financing done ahead of time at your bank/credit union. Last, leave your ‘gotta have it’ emotions at home. Now practice saying “No”.

A dealer should already build in the cost of doing business IE the overhead, the carry costs, and the employee sales commission. That is why they 'purchase' the vehicle on trade in at much less than retail to cover these costs. Therefore, the advertised price should be the asking price without any additional fees other than the doc fee...which 10 years ago was unheard of, now it's normal business. Get pre-qualified if you want the lowest interest rate as well as the known fees to be paid. The best negotiation method is to do what I do - what is my 'Out The Door cost'? Hold them to it, this incudes EVERYTHING, so that when you get that number, you can expect to be able to ride the bike off the showroom for that exact price.

Last Harley I bought was from an Indian dealer. Price was actually pretty good on the bike, and they had a doc fee that wasn't too bad, but my final negotiated price was OTD. They didn't make me insure it or plate it, and they delivered it 40 miles to my house as it was cold weather season. Yea for the Indian dealer!

Over the years (since 1990), I've gone to my local H-D dealership on 4 separate occasions wholly prepared to by a new motorcycle. The dealership screwed the pooch every single time. The last time (October 2023) they had the audacity to charge $1945.75 in fees plus an additional mystery deal add on of $755.61. I don't care if the greed is corporate's or the dealership's...all I know is that they seem content to be 0 for 4 in sales and I can't be the only customer that they've turned away. I'll continue to buy used from an independent shop or private party.

Great info as usual, thanks. It's going to be more relevant as all the new changes from H-D & the EPA start to run the costs up on new bikes. The dealers & bike shops are going to have more & more leverage. Unfortunately, those that are first time buyers are going to be more compelled to buying from a dealer thinking that it is safer to buy from them and I for one don't trust them. Even when you know the people. Sadly, the nature of the sales business.

Great channel man, I look forward to it every week. My old cammed 88 is smoking from rear cylinder with a noise. Now’s the time to big bore. My question, I hope you can answer. Should I go S&S 100”? Will I see a big improvement? What can I do about my heads? I got the biggest Fueling kit/cams before I have to install springs. On the cheap, what direction should I go? Can’t really afford new heads but they’ll be off. Ideas?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 17 күн бұрын
The 100 inch kit is $$ compared to a 95", if you're working on a budged the 95" with some bolt in cams would really be some bang for the buck. A nice mild port job on the heads would run you about $800 bucks to port and get the heads cleaned up. You'll need valve springs unless you go with a bolt in cam. If you're goin on a budget the 95 inch kit with some bolt in cams, clean up the heads and it'll rip hard over stock!

They can show all the fees that they want, but in the end NEVER EVER EVER pay anything over MSRP of the bike OTD… ie., MSRP is max price including all of the fluff and dust that a dealer says they need too sell you that bike. Point of Fact, new CVO/ST dealers are asking $5000 over MSRP so $47,999 to $49,999 here in SWFL, when the bike has an MSRP of $42,999.00 believe me when I say you CAN get that CVO/ST come September for nothing more than MSRP OTD. I bought a FAST JOHNNIE RG 2023 in October for just that. Now dang it they have some of the 2023 that got delivered in January 24 and you can actually save money and get it under MSRP out the door.

never bought from Harley dealer, but I have always haggled with an "all inclusive" price, thats means total, no hidden fees, and works well at used car dealers. as for me, i have no intentions of ever buying a NEW Harley, i was 1 that dealers mistreated in the 90's and they went after the yuppies, several places wouldnt deal with me to sell me oil, then 1 dealer had a bike i liked, tried to work a deal, and I was offered peanuts for my old shovelhead, $600 claimed it was worn out, needed lots of work, they argued about transmission leak? I still had the factory chain oiler working, which keeps chain lubricated, but they used the oil splattered chain rear wheel to say it leaked, i walked out cussing, only been back 1 time in 15 years, that was to order new key.

I can't really give you my experience on that. I did go to my local Harley dealer here in australia, back in 2014. I ordered a Softail with a Screaming Eagle 120ci motor, ape hangers, king & queen seat/sissy bat (or rather Harley's take on a king & queen seat/sissy bar). $50,000. I was knocked back on finance. I went out, found a 1997 Softail Custom with apes etc & a dodgy gearbox for $13,000. Bought a S&S 124ci crate engine $10,000 & a Jims Fat 5 Overdrive $5,000. So for $28,000 I got almost the same bike, but instead of a Twin Cam, I had a brand new Evo engine & a bulletproof gearbox. I love that bike. More than the Twin Cam I almost bought. No word yet as to how much the fee will be, except that it may be less for females (reportedly because on average they are smaller than men and therefore take up less space and consume less oxygen - not sure where that leaves non-binary folks). Harley drove a lot of small mom & pop dealers out of business in the ‘90s when they made them all build huge palaces and sell all kinds of clothes and such. The remaining dealers are probably still trying to pay off that upgrade expense.

That's exactly why most all Harley-Davidson dealers are owned by investment companies anymore. It takes that pool of money to keep with the dealership requirements, very few wealthy individuals privately own dealerships.

china davidson , that fancy clothing boutique doesn't have one stitch of clothing manufactured on this side of the pond . h d boots made in china soul broke right in half h d you guessed wouldn't honour their crap . It gets worse brand new ulta classic 2017 you know the fancy obe with luquid cooled heads , retirement bike about 10 K in extra's , right out of the showroom first trip home right back to the dealer that funny noise comming from what appeared to be the bottom end , the efn h d mechanic apparently his orders come from on high and he is to inform excellent 40 + year customer not to worry about it , the noise is just idle chatter .??? Numerous trips back to dealership wirh same problem , blown off by dealership to idle chatter ( at least they are consistent ) didn't put a whole lot of miles on bike due to health complications 17000 km. On bike now out of extended warranty bike is all of a sudden billowing blue & white smoke and sounds like pistons are trying to swap cylinders . 17 ,000 fn. Km not miles we're in Canada here miraculously this is not an h d problem after no less than a dozen trips into the shop right from day one and they refuse to honour their junk . Currently it is in a good aftermarket shop with the cases split . Looks like the path alot of ex h d supporters have taken over to Polaris is going to get alot of traffic .

So many Harley dealers have closed in the U.K., we’re just grateful for the ones left. Saying that I’m my experience they’ve been awful and act like they’re doing you a favour. Don’t ask about range and mileage like I did - he just stared at me 🫤😳. It’s usually a bunch of guys standing around in an empty store trying to fleece you more than the next one. Jersey HD has closed ( we used to buy parts a bit cheaper by mail order), Preston & Manchester have closed, so the HOG groups have to find their own way. We love the bikes despite their flaws but Harley have not supported their owners

What you said about they act like they are doing you a favor is just something I can't understand with a lot of dealers. They should be trying to sell you and not here it is take it or leave it, that has always blown my mind.

I bought a brand new Deuce and paid on it for four years, no problem. I got behind on payments. I caught and got current on all payments and late fees. I paid them everything and had the finances to continue paying it. They said everything was good. Just continue pay as agreed. Then Harley Financing repoed it that week. Guess who will never buy another Harley, Ever. I sure like my Honda Fury!

Whenever I buy anything like a bike or car I always ask for the Out The Door Price! That is so I don't have to hear about any of those add on fees. If I like the price I will buy it if not I walk away. Sometimes they'll ask you so how do you intend to pay for it. I tell them we'll work something out! It all depends on the out the door price!

I was seriously going to buy a HD a couple years ago. I didn't know exactly what i wanted, but they were constantly pressuring me to buy anything and offered me next to nothing for my trade. I left there and never plan to go into a HD dealer again. I'll never go to Road Runner Harley Davidson in Goodyear, AZ again...

In my area all motorcycle and car dealers add a bunch of BS fees. Always make an out the door offer. Just look up the NADA value guide and find out what the tax, and tag fees should be and make an offer. Either they take the offer or they don't.

I've had car dealers try this crap and I just get up and leave and never come back. Buying from an individual with good maintenance records is the way to go. If you don't know enough about Harleys to look the motorcycle over and ask questions, ask the owner if he will take it to a mechanic of your choice to inspect it. If the motorcycle is dirty and the owner starts, well it needs this and that walk away.

as a Brit, I'm only going to pay the advertised price and no more. Here in Britain, I understand that it is illegal to ask for more than it is advertised. I bought my used Softail from a shop several years ago, and I don't think I would even be able to contemplate a situation where the price I was about to pay was more than advertised. May be its the Scot in me. I payed £6000 cash.

Just remember that depending on if you do all your own work on the bike and are going to do anything to the engine internals, a warranty might just be a waste of money depending on whether or not it still covers the engine after you’ve done some things to it. These days the warranty might only be applicable if you only add Screamin Eagle parts.
@GixxerFoo

It is when it's done at the dealer using SE parts, the warranties aren't worth much when it's a fight to get it honored.
