If you own a M8 like my 2018 Fatbob, 2017 and 2019 CVOs don't waste money on Harley stage kits. The engine will blow up due to oil pump design flaws and/or plastic tappet guides. Yeah and $50k motorcycle with plastic tappet guides. Neither the dealer who installs it or H corp office will disclose this. S&S, Fueling or Zipper all make higher quality performance kits.

I started riding H-D’s as a teen on a ‘72 XLCH and I have to say they’ve really come a long way. This new M8 is my favorite engine by far. No more crank issues and the few issues they had with the engine thanks to the EPA have been addressed. I put over 100k on my TC96 before trading it in and am expecting this M8 to go just as far before a rebuild. We will see.

I agree with that. My brother has a 1976 FXE. That bike will shake you apart. The AMF bikes had a deserved bad reputation. It leaks a lot of oil, shakes like a paint shaker, has a lot of little problems. But it sounds very unique and you just don’t see them around anymore. It’s kinda like a new Challenger vs a 1970. The old one may be worse in some ways but it has a lot of character

Thanks a lot for this nice video! I just bought a 2019 road glide 107ci and its a huge improvement over the 103ci Ultra Limited I had before. One thing you didn’t mention in your video is the primary drive on the M8 is much smoother than the twin cam bikes especially at low speed in second gear. It also seems like the primary chain case is narrower on the M8 than the twin cam but that might be my imagination. I’ve been riding 25 years, all kinds of bikes...Honda, Triumph, Yamaha, Harley...I’m very happy with my new M8.

Oil cooled heads. 4 valves per cylinder. 2 plugs per cylinder. Hey we've caught up to Honda!..... if this was the eighties. What's next, a total liquid cooled engine capable of producing 120hp from only 1250cc? Nevermind we had that and the idea was rejected by HOG faithful like witchcraft in Salem. HOG, you're the reason we can't have nice things. You're the reason HD refuses to bring real advancement to the market. You're the reason HD has nothing to sell to the next generation of riders. There was a time in history when HD was the innovator, the leader in bringing advancement. Now they bring 30 year old tech to market and call it new and improved.

I know it's been 4 years, but the combustion chamber design is called Pentroof, vs the previous HEMI design. Basically every car in existence today uses Pentroof because it's cheap and easy to make them have more than 2 valves per combustion chamber. HEMI heads are harder to make and basically impossible to run 4 valves per head. Although, I would argue that 4 valves is a waste, especially in Harleys. 4 valves only lend themselves to high RPM. They lose low end torque.

I just rode a 2016 dyna twin cam 103 with a stage 1 yesterday, followed by a 2018 slim, M8 107 with slip ons, and the power difference between those two bikes back to back was 🤯💥🇺🇸 drastic comes to mind. The entire ride quality, handling, feel, shifting, literally everything about the M8 slim was far superior to the twin cam dyna. I say that but I still wanted the dyna more! Go figure? It rumbled and shook, and sounded like an angry beast and I loved it!! Then I rode a ‘21 FXLRS with the 114, stock, left over from last year and I bought it!! Amazing bike in every way. I have seen evidence of the M8 heads made cheap by some foreign manufacturer. The machine work is not the greatest and the heads look like Kawasaki may be the ones making the heads. I watched a noted machinist rebuild a set of M8 heads that had less then ten thousand miles. Valve seats were poor quality and the ports were really rough. I ride a 2010 Heritage and will stick with it. I believe the best engine HD ever made but did not have the power the new ones have is the Evo

I gotta compliment you on reading the spec sheet accurately, but nearly every reviewer talks about the increase in HP and torque at RPM. Just talking numbers doesn't tell the story of the M8 performance. What makes the M8 impressive is the fact that it achieves approx. 90% torque output at 2100 RPM, and sustains that level past 4000 RPM. The torque curve on this motor is high and flat, check out a dyno run chart, not just the numbers.

They have several remedies they are trying but none are definitive and don’t work on all bikes affected. And for the poor saps (like me) that haven’t been figured out, they just say “it’s normal and your covered by warranty”. Absolute bullshit.

How are they for reliability? Seems like finned valve covers would take some heat. Separate high volume jets of oil sprayed to piston pin area helps to transfer heat to oil cooler radiator. Top quality gaskets are essential to survive heat cooling cycles. Uneven heat dissipation stresses mating surfaces. Keeping rear cylinder exhaust valves cool is always a challenge. Exposed to white hot heat for hours on end that heat has to be removed or engine melting becomes a clear danger. Air cooled engines don’t like to idle in bumper to bumper traffic in desert heat they need air flow so a separate fan would be needed in this application. More oil and efficient cooling radiator is the way to go. Two systems, lubrication, cooling makes for a happy motor. Proper octane fuels help to deliver power not just heat. The more horses neath you the more heat as well. Low stress engines last longer. Two hundred degree engines are happy. 😄Five hundred degree engines say I’m out of here dude!🥵

Awesome and well worded video . My 2018 FXLR Low Rider is the best I’ve ever had . ( I’ve owned 13 H-D’s in 43 years ; oldest was a 53’ FL panhead ) I do believe this is Milwaukee’s best effort - with only (2) complaints . 1.) I don’t agree with the placement of the factory installed oil cooler . This was a great addition to the engine , however it totally blocks the “ clean air “ to the front cylinder . I do believe that , like some aftermarket oil coolers on the market , it could have been catching its own clean air off to the left of the frame’s front down tube . This would have allowed the front cylinder to continue to receive its clean air as it always has . 2.) the brakes , although “ better “ , are very inconsistently set up . I have spoken to many a riders of this new softail . They ALL agree that the front brakes are too sensitive , and most men agree that two fingers is the safer and more common way that they apply them . The rear brakes require that you use unnecessary application from your right boot to get the bike to slow / stop . When speaking to my trusted dealership that I have frequented since 1988 ; they explained that the “ engineering department “ at H-D did this intentionally to encourage the use of “ more front brake “ . I shook my head and wondered why they couldn’t let the novice rider learn to ride and not dumb down the pressure required for the rest of us . Also I would have liked to hear more about the M-8’s compression release described and perhaps seen the inside parts and how it works in this very informative video . Thanks for this job well done .

It's amazing Harley spent all this money into r&d (at least what they claim as an excuse for their prices) but yet the m8 has all kinds of problems. They just came out with an improved oil filter as well as a vented oil tank cap by fueling because their umbrella valves suck.

Do a video on the Street lineup or the Revolution X engine, the Street Rod is probably the only note worthy bike out of the lineup with a dual throttle body, hemi piston heads, upgraded fuel injectors and upgraded cams. The revolution x engine in the street Rod is also liquid cooled, and no counter balancers, so you can redline at 9000 RPM and feel every bit of it, in my opinion, it’s an absolutely amazing bike, only 750 CC 64 cubic in, but stock it has 18% more hp and 8% torque over the normal 750 cc revolution x engine that’s in the Street 750. I ran a low 13 sec 1/4 mile on it with pump gas and stock muffler and air intake, yes I said low 13 STOCK, my buddy has a S&S 114 cubic in engine in his road king and he runs 11s

Been riding Harleys since 1972. In the old days we didn’t buy bikes, we built them. Brought home my first Panhead in boxes. Had sportsters, pans, shovels, and twin cam. Just bought 2020 Breakout in Stiletto red. Best bike I’ve ever owned, blows all the others away. Most problems with engines can be traced back to the loose nuts behind the handlebars!

The M8 still uses roller chain drive for cam operation with a weak link in the heart of the beast, a PLASTIC cam chain tensioner that is a wear item and must be periodically changed out. H-D should have used a metal gear drive for cam operation like on the Sportster model. The cranksfat is beefier, but, still only pressed together halves, rather than a bolted together crankshaft, like they used to use on their single cam engines, like the EVO. Crankshaft can still twist out of true on the M8. The M8 should have relocated the stator (electrical component) outside the primary case, as that is the hottest spot on the engine, lays right up against the crankcase. They should have finally mounted the stator outboard of the engine, where it can run cooler. As for four valves per cylinder, that is a much better design, but, nothing, new, except to Harleys. Other bikes have been using 4 valves per cylinder for many years.

Nice to see an American company that prides itself on being American using German forklifts. I suppose Americans don't make forklifts. Oh wait, Crown is made in Ohio. Toyota is made in Indiana. Caterpillar is made in Texas. Looks like Harley went out of its way to use anything but American products. Nice job Harley.

Thank God Harley Davidson is still making single cam pushrod engines. There is no need for more than one cam in any engine, or some moron timing chain setup. Then again there is no need for water cooling eather. All those added points of failure, friction, rotating mass, ect. Thats like a motorcycle engine with more than 2 pistons, even top tier racers are finally realizing why those Harley Davidsons can slide around a flat track, or why that drag bike can launch like a jackrabbit... its called traction. Personally I prefer to have a reverse anti-lock brakeing system on my rear tire as I come out of a corner, or launch at the light, without the need for some electronic retarded timing traction control gizmo... but thats just me. Call me old fashioned, but you dont fix what ain't broke... you improve upon it, and fine tune it.

Traded in my 06 Fat boy and 15 Street Glide Special on 19 Tri Glide 114 cc. The reduction in heat is the best. More torque and power. HD did their home work. This Milwaukee 8 is the best yet. Continually surprise the cagers at how quick I leave the light. Takes a little time to get use to the trike after 49 years on two wheels. Never took to my 08 Electra Glide Ultra. Couldn't get past the heat and the height center of gravity with a rider and the tour pack loaded.
