Harley-Davidson Performance RUINED by Infinite Government Wisdom

Crippling Harley-Davidson performance changes are coming when the EPA gets done with exhaust and tuners. We can deal with the lean tunes and catalyzed exhaust but what we can't deal with is a lack of overlap with performance camshafts. Perfect example of "performance" camshafts with a lack of overlap are Screamin Eagle. This is exactly why Screamin Eagle camshafts are so weak compared to aftermarket performance camshafts that actually have overlap that is done right! The EPA hates overlap in their infinite wisdom. Performance may not be dead, but it's gonna take a lot more to get close to where bolt in aftermarket camshafts used to get us.

​@@chief2279Got a 96" EVO stroker, S&S heads, Super G carb Softail. Andrews cam, Andrew trans ECT. Tons of torque. Traffic disappears behind me. I think I will keep it after reading this. It does shake like a stroker, not as smooth as new bikes but the *tractor" seat lets you ride all day. Exhaust are dual shark fin exhaust pipes. When I start it,the blast cleans the garage floor as I back out lol 😂.

I took my 2013 Road King in for its 50k service. While replacing the cam chain tensioners and cam bearings, I learned the previous owner put in Woods cams. I had no idea. So with Woods cams, SE slip-ons, K&N intake, and a V&H FP4 tuner, I"m planning on adding true dual headpipes to finish it off the mods.

We will just have to go back to the old days of making our own stuff. Before S&S and others. My father made Strokers in the 1950s with Panheads using UL Flathead 80 inch flywheels. Made his own stroker plates welded up scrapers inside the crankcases used Su carburetors, the list goes on and on. We are Americans we can innovate. May have to go back to old style ignitions

Another comment to add. A buddy of mine cracked his inner primary cover while ripping it hard the other week. His dyna is a 1996 EVO and is hopped up. Is there a reason this happened? Any way to solve it?

The primary cover split? Sounds like the chain might of got to slapping around in there banging gears and hit the cover, if nothing was floating around in there that would be my guess. Only thing you can do is just check that chain adjustment and keep it within spec especially if your hitting it hard.

Making something out of nothing they are going after the oem’s. Look at the auto industry you can get a turbo kit for just about anything you just can’t sell it as 48 state legal forget California, as long as it’s labeled off road use they can make what ever they want. If you live in a state that doesn’t have an emissions check you’re fine. I think what you will see is people keeping there stock parts to pass emissions visual inspections(exhaust intake and the like). Then change them out

I don`t know why they even see a pollution problem from motorcycles, it`s not like theres a bizzillion of them on the roads or traffic jams for miles on the freeways. It doesn`t make sense. There was an article written in Yahoo Finance a few years ago where they interviewed the previous GM CEO while he was still employed by GM. They were talking about auto cost and got into talking about emissions because of the cost added to an automobile for catalytic converters. The CEO said they could actually make the cars run cleaner without them but the EPA is forcing them to install them. This is the government over reaching again. To me the EPA needs to come up with an emission standard that every body has to hit and not worry about how they do it. Motorcycles the same. The EPA is hamstringing all the transportation sector with their current rules and I firmly believe that if the manufacturers were let loose to hit a standard, they’d do it cheaper and better.

​@@chief2279I've got a 14 street glide with the V twin 103 and I bought it with 38k miles on it. I've had it for 4 years and now it has 49k been a damn good running engine. Only thing I've done is change the oil. I have taken it to get regular service maintenance. (Whatever that includes). Now I'm not sure what has been done to the bike before I got it (was told it has a stage two kit but I can't confirm that) My point is that it seems to be a trouble free motor and it has plenty of get up and go.

Hi 👋, Foo , The EPA are control freaks, I had an ex female partner like that, luckily I walked away, But not without being scammed by her, I have just recently purchased a 2003 Deuce, and I am back on the road again 😂, I think personally we should be allowed to do whatever we FFF want with our bikes, so long as it is done safely, and we have the breaking capability to stop the bike, And it is our right hand that controls it, I’m not sure how you/we stand legally, but is it something if you’ve got a petition up?, And went to the courts you could have this overruled., And as I have said before, we’re gonna have to ask him to see whether we can go to the toilet or not, oh and what sort of toilet paper we can use as well? I don't see the EPA telling manufacturers how to design cams where it's not the cam that pollutes the air it's the ignition, intake and exhaust that are more at fault so I think Andrews and Woods are safe.

I really hope that's the case, Screamin Eagle cams have no overlap to speak of and they sell those as street legal. They used to have cams that we're race use only, that was a big difference in the street legal 120ST engine and the 120R race engine was that cam.

Take an air sample before tune and cam and then one after. The difference is what the epa is after. Just look at the aftermarket diesel industry, companies are still getting smashed by epa fines for stuff they stopped doing years ago. You change one piece on the engines, i.e. the intake and that effects the output of emissions, which is why all parts (even if not shipped to ca) need that stupid carb #

Over lap is the way to go i run a 468 red shift cam great power no cat In a stock looking fat bob ported heads and tune threw the ECM 140 hp and 135 tork you can hear the over lap when it idea's down 55 throttle body F the epa more power

They aren't messing with cams yet but it's a matter of time before they do. I like over lap cams and noisy as well. A cam that thups is a good cam. As far screaming eagle I'm not much of a fan and don't use there stuff. I like the aftermarket stuff. I have my favorites and I mix them. The government/EPA need stay out of our hobbies. I'm a little late to the party but just bolting on high performace cams and nothing else can cause premature wear on piston rings and valves and push rods, lifters etc... I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination so help me understand how to preserve the longevity of the rest of the components without adding high performance upgrades to match the cams.

Cams designed as bolt in installation are actually not bad at all on the stock valve train. Honestly bolt in Screamin Eagle cams which are not nearly as good are harder on the valve train.

True statement! I can prove this because my 98 Evo was once fuel infected and would average 40-43 mpg regularly. When that efi system started acting up I yanked it and converted it to carburetor (CV40). Believe it or not it gets 50-55 mpg with a carburetor and actually runs better than before. It's way leaner than before and obviously puts out less CO2 emissions.

You are correct. I had a S/E torque cam installed on my 21 Ultra Limited and ditched the catalytic head pipe. Mileage actually went UP. Of course, I gotta keep my hand off the throttle!

Ok. Going to play devil’s advocate her. This is my opinion only. I’ve watched your last 3 videos and you clearly are anti EPA. I get it. But i think you also have an overly alarmist viewpoint of the EPA and their concern with anything other than corporate HD. Yes, HD has to comply with their emissions standards. But to my knowledge they are not going after individual dealerships, or small independent shops for their practices. V&H (to my knowledge) had voluntarily started producing their pipes with cats in them and adjusted their tuners to comply. They were not mandated by the EPA. Some Manufacturers are producing two versions of their pipes - catted and non catted. The EPA had way bigger fish to fry than going after individual manufacturers of “speed” parts in the motorcycle industry. You can still get tons of after Market speed parts that are non compliant for cars ( a way bigger segment of the industry). Passing emissions is a state by state issue. Some do require emissions, some don’t. So while your topics make for interesting content and debate, I think you are getting out over your skis’ thinking that the government is going to focus all of its energy on the motorcycle industry which is a small part of the personal transportation industry. Again, just my opinion. And yes? I know I’m going to get destroyed in the comments. I don’t care. It’s just an opinion. Keep up the good work.

My biggest concern in Tasmania is not being caught on one of the many speed cameras. It’s almost predatory there now, not only that but it’s down to 50kms an hour in built up residential areas and down to 40kms in the city, it’s fkn pathetic. They’ve pretty much given all the shitty old drivers the go ahead and reduced all road users to the lowest common denominator. Probably not the smartest time to have bought a bike with a 131 kit.

This is exactly what I just can into on my 23 ST road glide. I wanted a star racing 30/30 cam. Was told harley does not have the software to tune that cam in my bike. The dealer has had 2 bike that tried. Screaming eagle tuner could not be tuned to that cam. Called star racing and they said harley will not tune it currently because of epa regs. George said you need a thundermax or dyno jet tuner in order to tune it. 😢 guess I'll have to wait till harley Decides to offer a map for it

Harley-Davidson's street tuner can't tune for aftermarket cams, it has to be DynoJet Power Vision or the Thundermax. Harley stuff is only good if you're buying Screamin Eagle.

Well hopefully we'll always be able to do the mods we want and have a shop dyno tune it. That said, my plan is figure out the build I want, have the speed shop do the job and put her on a dyno once and have her tuned custom to what she is instead of a canned tune that isn't optimal. Just spend the $500 or so once and do it right the first time. Tired of hearing about the EPA too, in my state motorcycles are exempt.

In a 103 with a Wood cam by the numbers it get's you up there with a 114 with exhaust and tune. Now cam a 114 and well that's another story.

Depends what Stage 4 kit were talking about, 107 to 114, 114 to 117, then they have the 119 to 122 kits then the 131. All of them usually make around 120 horse and torque, the Screamin Eagle cam kills the power. But a 114 cams swapped to say a Wood WM822XE will make what the 120 horse and torque with exhaust and tune. 6 grand in parts in labor for Stage 4 SE Kit or more like 2K with a cam swap.

Especially with a bassani road rage 2-1 and these tunes, would that be correct? I guess the only real reason to go that route is to keep warranty, plus my local dealership flat out refuses to put aftermarket cams on a new m8.
