I've never ridden a Harley. Have had the pleasure of riding a couple CBs, a Triumph Thruxton, Ducati Monster, and an Indian Scout. All fun in their own right, and nice bikes. I just find it crazy how a motorcycle I have never driven before can still evoke such a desire to own one in me. Harley, the brand and the bike, have their flaws. But they also have lightning in a bottle in terms of soul and character to their bikes.

Definitely the Sportster. It's the last "real Harley" in the classic sense and isn't such a huge bike like all of the others. But the coolest part of all is it's not a complete pig. For about $5000 of parts you can build a 120whp Sportster that will run high nine- low ten second passes with a swing arm and a good rider. But those builds with stock sporty suspension and brakes are death traps on the street 😂. You can build one with a smidge over 100whp for 2500 ish in parts. The biggest selling point of all, they're still fun to ride even without thrashing the shit out of them.

Riding a Harley Touring bike is definitely different to modern sports and adventure bikes. On my KTM 1290 to have fun I was always riding well above the speed limit, which is license loosing territory and when going slower it was a boring bike to ride. Now riding a Harley Ultra Limited the speed has significantly reduced but the bike is still engaging to ride, it handles well in most situations and to punt it along winding roads I have to ride well. Most of the time these days I ride at or close to the speed limit and enjoy pushing a 400kg whale at a progressive speed, this does surprise some of the people I ride with. I use the term progressive speed because the Ultra is too heavy and fast riding on winding roads is way outside my level of acceptable risk. As stated in other comments the sound track from the engine is great. Riding comfort is probably only rivalled by a Goldwing and my partner loves the pillion seat and backrest. So I am happy to cruise around progressively without the risk of loosing my license or worse.

I used to think that Harleys are slow, without technology, unreliable and overpriced bikes for old farts who do not greet other riders on roads unless they are on Harleys also. Then one day I went to demo rides to see what all the fuss is about (at that time I owned MT-09 2017). It was an interesting experience, full of positives. But that 20 km of demo ride was not enough for me to want Harley myself. Then in 2019 I finally make my dream come true and went to the USA to do coast to coast road trip on a motorbike. Of course, I rented Harley to fully experience American road-tripping. I was riding Ultra Limited for cca 7000km and loved every kilometer. So peaceful, comfortable, and without any pressure. A totally different experience from my MT-09, which inside speed limits always felt slow. It was pushing me to my limit and toward injury, losing my license, or even killing myself. After that road trip, I fell into a retro scene and in 2020 I sold MT-09 and bought myself a Z900RS. I was thinking about buying a Harley, but the used market in my country is poor when it comes to Harleys. The price of a new one is high by default, but here is even higher...about 10-15% more. Anyhow, Z900RS looked like good value. Nice looking, slower (not enough though), less aggressive, more comfortable than MT-09, and without a doubt, better value than Harley (at least on paper). Last year I went to Fakker See on Harley event to try some new models. Just for fun. But those demo rides actually woke up a wish of owning a Harley that was there the whole time since that USA trip. Today I believe I made a mistake buying a Z900RS, and not saving myself more money to buy a Harley. There is something special about them and I do believe that every rider should try riding one to experience it. Maybe you will love it, maybe hate it or maybe you will feel the same as before. But don't be judgemental. Even though they are without a doubt overpriced af. :D

I understand that for Europeans the H-D is an exotic bike. But this bike is a "religion", or a lifestyle in America more than, say, a "normal" bike. I don't see you here riding in some twists and turns you normally do on other bikes. Dragging parts on a Harley is very easy in turns. Riding position is awkward. Feet forward controls lacking the feel of being in control. On a bumpy road you'll feel every bump thru your spine, but yeah the sound is cool to make an impression of a "bad boy", but for how long you'll tolerate it on a long trip? Yeah, the torque is always good to have, but sometimes you want to open the throttle up (maybe on a long straight) but it'll keep running out of its 5k rpm's limit letting you know that it's about to explode. Getting annoying after a while. Vibration... yes, it's H-D's character. Good for the girlfriend on the back seat :)) This bike is a lifestyle more than anything. Many use it as a bar-hopping tool... But to be fair, I have to admit, some do long distanced on a Harley. Mostly on highways or straights which are plenty in the US.
