Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Engines are Under Appreciated

Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engines didn't exactly get the best welcome to the world after the Evo due some "issues". Those issues plagued the Twin Cam engine's reputation for its entire existence. Even as the years went by and the issues were corrected the Twin Cam engines were plagued by their reputation. It's not that the Harley-Davidson Twin Cam is a bad motor it's just got a bad reputation. Twin Cam engines are pretty reliable and can handle a good deal of power while still remaining reliable for many many years and miles.

I had two Evo's before my 1999 FXDX TC88, I do my own wrenching and noticed the TC88 was a bit more refined mechanically and integrated, inspecting the cam chains I discovered S&S gear drive and Fueling 7000 oil pump, stock cams and plate, stock ignition has made it very reliable so far, the only downside is fuel consumption from the right wrist and a Mikuni 45 .

2003 RK..118,500 miles. Set #4 tensioners, lifters, 3 point engine isolators and some other misc replaced for PM. Still runs good, having some noise that I hope is the compensator and not internal engine. It's wrenching season in Ohio and will check out compensator. Never had issues with charging system, clutch always stayed in specs.

Personally I think the 2003 88 Twin Cam is the Best engine, no crank issues nor compensator issues as long as the engine was maintained stock. The only thing to look out for and service regularly is the cam chain shoes, keeping them in check you easily get 300k miles out the engine and still running strong 💪 and enjoying my 2003 100 Anniversary Ultra Classic !❤

2002 Fatboy, stock crankshaft with zero runout issues & Timken bearings. Mikuni HSR45 carb, 97" S&S top end, S&S fueling plate/oil pump, fueling lifters & push rods, ported stock H-D heads, S&S Cobra 2 into 1 header, S&S gear drive cams. I've been wrenching & riding on H-D's for over 50 years, this bike with the progressive shocks & engine mods is a pure joy to ride. It has earned a permanent home in my garage on reliablity alone.

I will be buried with my twin cam. It gave me a ton of problems, but I still love it. I have since had the entire motor rebuilt using the S&S Sidewinder 110. The g-force can just about make me hurl my lunch. I kept the heads stock (because it's a touring bike!), threw a set of SE585 cams in it, and it's all good. I got screwed by the crank issue, so my cases were split, and in jumps the S&S 4 3/8 crank. Also tuned by techno-research. I just love twin cams for the exceptional sound that positively no m8 can give you. Technology? Na, you can keep it. Nothing like the visceral feel of a rowdy twin cam!

Bored the 07 ou to 1250, wild cams, lots of head work by Hammer, was putting out about 110 hp at arounf 7000 rpms. Beat the shit out ov it and it just came back for more! I was perfectly happy with this bike unfortunately it was destroyed in a garage fire. I couldn't find a used bike that I liked for a variety of reasons so I bought a new Slim with the 110. I chose it mainly that that it came with cruise and ABS. I kept it for two years and then couldn't take it anymore. The heat from that engine was unbearable especially when stuck in traffic. The hydraulic clutch was no jewel either, in stop and barely go traffic it was brutal to the hand. Furthermore the engine was extremely noisy. I got rid of some of it with aftermarket lifter and Rockouts. It was my last and final Harley. I traded it for a 1400 Guzzi. Faster, handled better, and barely felt any heat even with the cylinders right in front of my thighs. There is more than one reason to stick the cylinders out of the side of the bike but cooling is one. When Guzzi owners complain about the heat, I respond "what heat go try out a 110 Harley then you will know what heat is. There is no right or wrong way to mount an engine just a left and right way. 😊 I just bought a V100 Guzzi, my my Harley has a long way to go to catch up to the rest of the world. If a 10,000 bikes a year company can build something like this for a lot less money then there is no excuse why Harley can't up it's game.

@radiozvrk6784 prije 1 minutu I sold my 2009 RK after I tested Custom 1400. Great bike, it's like a bullet. I'm old Guzzi fan,my grandfather had 1936 250 airone,I grew up with that bike in our garage. I started with 1982 350 imola vhen I was 15 years old, still have it. And at 42 i'm back on Guzzi. This month I was to Mandello,to finally visit the factory, really nice museum... Next year again,I live 600 km from Mandelo in Croatia.

My V100 is my 3rd Guzzi. I miss my Audace but it just got too awkward for me due to weight, rake and trail, I am after all 78 years old. I also have a V7lll Special which I mainly use for local riding, errands etc. The V100 is the best handling bike I have ever ridden.

Cathing up with this video. I stupily sold my 02 FXSTS years ago with TC88. I had put in the S&S gear drive w/S&S cams into V&H big radius. Carb'd. Nice increase in power & sound. Around 20+k mi. Guy who bought it has over 100k and ridden very hard. Breaks my heart. I replaced my FXSTS with another this time a 96 Evo. Getting ready to do the lifters & p-rods. Want to cam & bearing at same time. I'm also waiting delivery of a 2015 Freewheeler 103TC. 20k mi. Also have/had 06 FLHRI inj TC88. Only 14.6k mi. Runs perfect with true dual Rineharts. BTW I run RedLine 3 holes. Great. Just my $.02.

I haven't owned one. A friend of mine has a 2002 Softail Standard that he rides daily and has had very few problems with it. He absolutely loves it. I still love my '95 Evo Electra Glide with almost 102,000 miles on it. If I decide to get rid of my 883 Sportster, I may go for a TC Dyna Wide Glide. I would like to do a Dyna with a Springer front end on it. Get a 100" big bore kit with a set of Wood 555s and mildly ported heads. Should be a good fun set up.

I Personally bought one of the first twin cam's in 1999. After I put 15,000 miles on it the problems with the timing chain and tensioners were becoming well known. I had H-D DLR install S&S gear drive with 510 cams in it with a new oil pump, they also installed an after market tuner so I had basically an after market stage 2. This really improved the bottom and mid range power and the bike was very fun to ride. I put 100,000 miles on it before I sold it to my nephew who still has it. the engine has never been apart and has never leaked oil. Oh and I had also moved the vent tube strait down from the motor with a place PCV hose from NAPA because from day 1 I was getting oil dripping from the air filter. I don't know if that added to the engine life or not. I took a 3600 mile trip with it jut before I sold it and it used a pint of oil. I also own a 1998 EVO that we had to rebuild the engine with 92,000 miles on it because it was literally using a quart of oil every 50 miles. Both bikes had the oil changed every 3,000 miles through their lives. I now own a 2014 103 TC with an after market stage 1 with a power vision tuner license and I love the bike and how it runs. I also own a 2017 Milwaukee 8 with an aftermarket stage 2, CR480 cam, S&S cam plate, oil pump, lifters, cuffs, and a TSS tuner. I also installed an additional crankcase vent using a vented dipstick from Feuling. This is also a very fun bike to ride. I will probably have to replace the cylinders, pistons, at some point with the M8 from what I have been reading and expecting head gasket failure and ring failure around 50,000 miles. Once that happens and I replace those parts with good aftermarket ones I expect that it will be ready for another 100,000 miles but I will probably never put those kind of miles on it because I am riding less than I used to. In my opinion the TC is a great motor better than the EVO for both power and engine life. The M8 I expect after all of the mods will also be a great motor that will be long lasting and boy the power is so much fun.

2009 fltr 96’ good motor. This month the dealership changed the compensator, the umbrella valves, some gaskets.. Front tire front bearing for the wheel.. I think it’s a bike and motor combination.. if I had a passenger and they were heavy, I would want 103.. but I ride solo and pearl black… I hope you’re feeling well. Everybody take care.

The chain shoes are so easy to check it doesn't make sense not to. The outer is not worth leaving if you look at it. The inner lasts twice as long as the chain runs half the distance. Don't risk it, stick with service intervals and all will be rosy. My '99 carb 88 has 25k on it and sounds like a swiss sewing machine. Pulls harder than I ever need with filter and Vance and Hines short shots.

NGL I love the twin cam. I've put a 103 or 107 in every Harley I've owned. But the Evo is the one where if you take a few parts everywhere you go. You can literally rebuild it on the spot with a little mechanical know how. You can do the same with a twin cam, but I would NOT want to. So which is better? If I'm driving across country. I probably want a Evo engine. But for literally every other occasion? Twin Cam can't be beat.

I have an XL1200 Sportster and a Twin Cam 103 HO Softail Slim. Personally, bang for the buck (because we are *still* paying M8 tax) a Twin Cam 103 is an absolutely fantastic option for the vast majority of people. I can pull right along with my Sportster on my Softail (which is saying something considering that Sportster has the primary and final drive of an 883). Also I happen to like the way the Twin Cam bikes sound, over the M8's. In summary, I think the Twin Cam is an extremely underappreciated engine, especially in the later years with the 103 and most especially the 110's.

My bought new 2011 103 Road King has been excellent, the salesman advised updates, 6 months later I had them done. SEAC, SERT, SE255 cam, new headers (Cat GONE), dyno brought it all together, and it transformed from bike to beast. Heat was gone, and 6 gear developed purpose in two up riding. A real treasure to ride. Mobil 1 V-Twin Syn in all 3 holes, keeping this bike for a long, long time.

I love my 2015 flhxs. 50k miles no issues. Very dependable and with only a stage 1 just as fast as similar equipped 107 m8 bikes. I'm curious about the 117" twin cam builds. They are pretty rare, but I haven't seen much on them. Rarity, I assume, because you had to start with a 110. I think the twin cams also sound good. Not Evo great, but not m8 bad. M8 can sound good but takes a bit of coin to do it.
