how to get'er to fire up no problem, even after sitting: assuming the stock Harley carb, turn the petcock on, give a moment for the bowls to fill, pull the choke out fully, give the throttle 2-3 pumps, hold the throttle open only a crack, and she'll light right off. The Harley CV carb does not like being pumped while cranking, so remember that won't give you a happy start, more likely to flood it. But if you do flood it, they're very easy to clear by just holding open the throttle maybe 1/3 the way open. Stay safe bros, ride good, and that old Evo sounds amazing!!

If you goose the throttle two or three times and make sure the enrichener is pulled out, it would start a lot quicker. It also helps to have a working battery. Also, high revving on cold startup adds a lot of wear and tear on internals. You don't seem to understand much about Harleys.

Have had 4 Harleys .Always put them away for winter .Never had a prob starting any of them after 5 months of storage. Used to let them tick over with tap turned off till they cut out .Then took out plugs and cleaned them .put 5 mill of redex in each cyl .Topped the tank right to the brim with fuel , put in 20 mill or redex.Connected optimate 24 /7 charger .And thats it. On starting I would spin it over with plug leads off a few times to get the oil up .Put leads back on and never failed to start after a few turns ( sometimes instant start ) .Have done this procedure since 1989.

My 97 fatboy did that same thing about a year ago. I replaced the spark plugs and it started right up. Still till this day it stumps me how two plugs could just decide to quit comepletely and the engine wasnt flooded either because im too smart to flood an engine. And I havent had any trouble since. I think some things are spiritual I suppose because I still cannot define why On yours I noticed once it started running smoothly that your pilot jet and carburetor are perfect, I know that because I am professional when it comes to carbs. On any harley you should always carry a spare pair of spark plugs

Same problem in the early spring, vacuum operated fuel valve no gas in the carburetor. Took the gas line off the valved and primed the carb and she fired up👍

Good to know! Enjoy your bike and stay safe out there.
@jefffrayer8238 Жыл бұрын
Scott is right. If you drain carb or gas evaporates over winter that vacume operated fuel valve forces you to crank it to create vacume to let gas into carb. Takes a while. Take air filter off to carefully squirt a little gas into carb. A clean 80/90 W gear oil bottle works very nice.

not if they're put away correctly. What they have is a tank full of degraded gas. StarTron or SeaFoam makes ALL the difference. Gas begins to degrade after about 3 weeks.

@@lynskyrd I just top the tank up before storing and add 20 mill of fuel stabiliser ( redex ) have done that since 89 and never had a start up prob .mind you I run it with tap tuned off to empty carb .I reckon that's most peoples problems leaving the carb full on a long lay over.
