Henning, the push-pull on the bridge's tone knob is not a 10db boost, it's a bypass of all the knobs. Basically it sends the signal out from the bridge pickup directly to the output jack with no pots in between. By the way, I'd pick the Gibson between those two any day.

Based on tone only, LP sounds more warmer/fatter to me. The Harley is nice sounding as well. Based on tone only, i would pick LP. This was a nice experiment thanks for sharing, very informative.

Gibson pickups are quite likely more expensive than Fishman Fluence. Correction. Set of Burst Bucker Pro pickups is 200 bucks at Thomann, set of Fishman Fluence pickups (including potentiometers and input jack, which can run for 50-60 bucks) is at around 310 bucks. Found one shop at ebay which was selling set for 200 pounds (around 220 bucks)

They're nice, but the 57 and 57+ in my Gibson sound every bit as nice and the coil taps do almost as much. If I were building from scratch, I'd definitely consider the Fishman pickups.

Hard to tell on this one - the soundquallity isn`t too good. From what I`ve heard - I personally liked the Gibson LP better. Sounds fatter and warmer. The HB sounds a bit more tinny (Tele-like) I think.

You get the out-of-phase sound on the gibson, if you switch to both pickups and pull the neck tone pot. The bridge tone pot pulled will give you just the bridge pickup (no matter where the selector is) and tone control bypassed.

Great job on the mods and I am sure it plays better than the Gibson. The problem is that the Harley pimpton is not a Gibson and has zero resell value except for parts. I love doing mods on inexpensive guitars but I know I will lose money every time I mod a guitar.

You'd be surprised by how well HBs hold their value on second hand market. You can sell old models (the ones that are not being produced anymore, like the singlecuts with old headstock) for the same price it was brand new, current line models seem to get you 50-70% of the new price. Losing 30% of 200 bucks hurts much less than losing 20-30% of 1800 bucks

Fenders and Gibsons tend to appreciate in value out a decade or so. The HB may one day acquire the sought-after nature and price as Japanese lawsuit guitars and MIJ strats, but probably not. Today, this is an affordable guitar with a shit ton of expensive used parts.

I just watched the rant 360 vid and then this one for the first time. I have no idea what in the room sounded like or the feel of each guitar. I know the audio is only coming through the lapel mic. That all being said. Judging only by the audio in this video. I think the Gibson sounds better. I don’t play Gibson or am biased by the name. To me in this video with bad audio the Gibson sounded best. So maybe that’s what everyone was hearing. Maybe this will make you feel a little bit better. I know because you said it, the HB was better. And I trust you the guy in the room more than the KZbin audio. Chalk it up to a bad audio interpretation. You could redo the video and have both guitars setup and adjusted with the audio setup right. Or like I said, it was just a weird freak audio interpretation. Either way great vids. Love the channel.

I really wanted the HB to sound as good or better than the LP. I can hear the difference and the LP is the clear winner when it comes to that growl/grunt/bark(however you want to describe it). That being said, I think new pickups, pots and a new bridge would add about 4-500 bucks to a 240 dollar guitar without all of the other work done. That would put it around 700 bucks for a guitar that would most likely destroy anything in a 700 dollar price range. I would also have not used the Fishman pickups. I don’t need the coil split(I have a strat for the single coil sound). I would love to hear what the HB sounds like with a LP pickup or at least a Seymour Duncan JB(bridge)with a 59 in the neck. Loved the videos about this project. Excellent job!

I know we can't take it too seriously with that audio but I find I disagree with most of the commenters here and I think the Harley sounded marginally better. Of course it's very subjective and the audio may be misleading but if you were to offer me a choice (for free) then I would go with the HB. The Gibson sounded warmer in a couple of places, I have to admit, but mostly the HB cut through in ways the Gibson didn't and I can always add warmth with my amp and pedals.

I'm with most people who commented, the HB is to thin (by the sound on the video), the Gibson has a rounder more pleasant sound in general. One thing that one can't compare is the re-sale value, the HB will always be a €250 guitar no matter how much mods are made, the Gibson will re-sell for almost MSRP.

Not a fan of the pickups in the HB either, they sound like they belong in an SG/ST style guitar. They do sound good but not for a LP style guitar. I would love to hear a proper low output PAF style pickup set on the HB, I think then we will see closer sounds between the two.

I would agree with that, both have their own plus and minus points and both can offer something different. The real question for me is would a HB that is already at the Gibson price point (if there was one, I haven't checked, don't have a go at me, etc...) be comparable to a Gibson...possibly, probably, maybe I don't know. None the less I like the HB and what you have done with it.

I think the fluence pickups sound very different to how I imagine a Les Paul style humbucker. I suspect the guitars might have been closer sound wise before the pickup change. Incorrect wiring is more worrying to me. It doesn't say much for Thomann's quality control. My own experience with lower priced, Chinese, instruments is that the woods are often less stable when shipped. Hopefully, your Harley Benton is old enough to have stabilised. If not, that very expensive Plek setup might be voided in a few weeks.

I posted some comments about Halon Guitar Parts in the comments section of another video. I meant to tell you about Prima guitar shop. I read a post from a guy on the gear Page a few years ago ltalking about how great Michael Mohr's Prima guitar shop pickups are. I had seen them before but they were so cheap I didn't think they would be any good. After reading this guy's Post in the gear page I ordered a set of humbuckers. They'll blow you away. The guy on the gear Page posted he wanted some Prima pickups, but he was skeptical because of the low price then he figured what the hell at that price he didn't have nothing to lose. He said he was glad he took a chance on them because they were hands-down the best pickups he'd ever owned. He said Michael really knows his shit. Okay so here's the deal. Michael Mohr is the name of the hand winder who owns and runs Prima guitar shop. He's really a great guy. He has a laser cutter and can cut his own bobbins. He told me he could make a pickup for anything with strings on it. His website was down when I checked it last, said they're updating it. Michael's still on reverb listed as Prima Guitar Shop. His standard single coil sets for Strats are $106 for 3 pickups. That's $35.33 per pickup! Michael's standard humbucker set is $182 for 2 pickups. That's $91 per pickup. I cannot remember the price of his telecaster sets. These are true hand wound pickups, every inch of wire passes through his fingertips. He doesn't just turn on a pickup winding machine, set the number of turns and wait for it to get done. Most hand wound pickup sets start at $400 and go up from there. Michael has all kinds of pickups for anything you could possibly want. He's been winding for 40 plus years, ever since age 15. You will not get a better pick up anywhere at any price. Check out his Dust Devils these are true works of art. He has humbuckers from 2.7K all the way to 80k. This is a special pickup with 4 coils and 8 wires on one humbucker. Check out Prima's Diabolus Infernum, neck-20K bridge-30K - $240 per set. These are special set for heavy metal made to compete with Seymour Duncan custom shop El Diablo, $320 per set. Here's the link to Prima Guitar Shop's Reverb Store - reverb.com/shop/prima-guitar-shop Prima Guitar Shop | Reverb Don't be fooled by Michaels low prices. They're cheaper than DiMarzio, Duncan, Gibson and Fender, His pickups are second to none. I asked him what's why he charges such a low price for his pickups especially since they're such high-quality. Michael replied, I know I could probably charge a lot more for my pickups but I wanted to get as many sets of truly great pickups into the hands of the average working musician who could not otherwise afford a set of Handwounds. Anybody who thinks like this as got my vote. it's refreshing in this day and time especially to see someone who isn't out to get every last drop of money they can out of everybody. Michael is just your average everyday working man like all of us. If you contact him or order a set tell him Jimmy in NC sent you. I don't get anything out of stuff like this. When I find something truly great I try to share it with everyone and I always tell them to mention my name because when I find something great I'll tell the seller, in this case Michael, I'll try to pass as many customers as I can to them. I just like for whoever to know that I'm just a working man trying to help another working man. You know as Hillary said the basket of deplorables, the Walmart smelly people!! All of us deplorable Walmart smelly people have to stick together. It doesn't matter where you live or what country you're from the average workingman is the same all over the world. He works hard because he wants a better life for his children and family. Most of the time he's way underappreciated and lives out his life and nobody even knows he was here except his family and friends. I really hope this stuff I've sent to you helps you. Best Wishes and God Bless you 🙏 😇 and Your Family!! Jimmy in NC.... P.S. Leo Fender had it right when he said, "No machine will ever take the place of a talented hand winder."

Well, in your previous video, I said you talk shit about Gibson without even making a video on their guitars and that I would love too see some Gibson guitars over here. THAT WAS QUICK!! Now that you like Gibson, please, take home some more of them. The Gibson you show here sounds good (if we can only judge its sound based on a video), has a better and more expensive wood and a real maple top (if anyone cares), better build quality and tuners, and has a much higher aftermarket value, so it wins. Also, it looks good on you! I loved every les paul I played and if I had money, I would probably buy more than one, and that's the real problem with Gibson. Overpriced, especially those around 4000/6000 euro. You deserve another kiss btw :* P.S. I use that same cable! Thomann FTW!!!

When CDs came out people said they missed the vinyl noise. I have always had a problem with LPs because of what I call “mahogany mud”. This is why I prefer PRS for Humbucker tones and strats for single coil tones. The Harley Benton simply doesn’t have that mahogany mud and I think that’s what people missing when they say they prefer the Gibson. If we were listening to the mic on the cabinet I think this would be more apparent.

Think the single coil sound of the Fishman's is more convincing then on the LP. But honestly, owning a LP myself with all these push pull things I can tell you that I've never ever used those. Only one I use (rarely) is the bypass option that mine has. Other then that... I'd have to agree with the majority of the commenters in saying I'd pick the Gibson.

Oder seid ihr alle Solokünstler ? Wer hat denn diese Audiomöglichkeiten , wie in diesem Video ? Ich spiele sowohl teure Gitarren , aber auch 8 HB guitars und die brauchen sich nicht zu verstecken. This was a little surprising to me. I was expecting the HB to sound better than it does, after all those upgrades. It does sound a lot better than stock, but I still hear seem to hear the HB's characteristics. If tonewood existed, I would say the HB's woods are one of the reasons for that ( ;) couldn''t resist). So, on a more serious note. I do believe woods make a difference on an electric guitar and that is what I'm hearing. More proof of something I believed to be true. Your mileage may vary, of course. Thanks for sharing, Henning. This was very interesting indeed.
@dainiusvysniauskas2049

Interesting take. But let's think about it - the onyl thing that didn't change on HP is the body and neck woods. Before upgrades, it had that thick, LP-ish sound. After upgrades, it goes from acoustic-like cleans to super fat sound, completely changing the characteristics of the sound. If guitar lost its "wood" properties with hardware change, did the "wood" properties exist in the first place?
@raytorvalds3699
@raytorvalds3699 7 жыл бұрын
I wasn't saying it lost its wood properties. I was saying it retained its wood properties. Sure, the sound changed a lot after all that hardware, but I can still hear the same characteristics '"underneath" that sound. Or maybe I just want to hear that. Who knows ? Thank you for the response +Dainius Vyšniauskas
@firstdreamwalker
@firstdreamwalker 5 жыл бұрын
@Ray Torvalds, A drum kit sounds over sound waves (longitudinal waves), from the sound of a solidbody guitar only the transversal wave is picked up by the magnetic pickups. That's a fundamental difference. Just stand with the solidbody guitar right in front of a wall and strike a chord. Acoustically you immediately hear a difference (much louder). The sound coming out of the amp is not a bit different. Pickups do not pick up longitunal waves, only transversals perpendicular to the field. The frequencies of the entire timbre, which transmit in the body of a guitar and are not reflected directly on the bridge, remain the same when exiting the body. Only their amplitude may have changed. That The wood could ultimately only affect the ratio of the amplitudes of the harmonics and thus just the timbre. But have you ever heard real professional musicians talking about the guitars of some of their rig rundowns? Not the bean. It's about PicksUps, Pedals, Amps. The wood does not itch because the effect is just marginal. Take a look at the legendary Red Special. soundwood? Not really! But please do not exclude the behavior of semi-acoustic or fully acoustic instruments on the one solid body guitar. It's like Apples and pears. The pickups, the scale, the string thickness, the string material, the bridge, the groove, the amp, the cabinets, all these things have a much stronger impact on the sound of a solidbody guitar than the wood. Forget about the wooden babble....

You cannot deny the quality, tone and majesty of a Gibson Les Paul...standard, custom or otherwise, yeah sure, there's always exceptions to the rule, but over the course of about 70 years they've endured in various guises because they are just simply fantastic guitars. Putting that crappy Harley Benton up against a Gibson Les Paul from whatever year is quite frankly shameful. Regardless of what mods have been done to the Harley Benton. Just trying to knock Gibson, that's all it is.

I had that model of Harley Benton that I bought from Nick in the States. I didn’t like it, ended up selling it. Thought the stock Wilkinson pups in it sounded awesome. Was a well built, heavy guitar, but the flame top looked like mud compared to yours. Also the guitar was set up completely differently than how I like it. The action was too high & the string tension was too taut, plus it was set up for 10 gauge strings, I use 9s & since I had so many Les Pauls I didn’t want to mess with it. I loved the premise of these videos, but I must say the ending was very anti-climatic. Would’ve liked to see the comparison with edit cuts between the two & with the tonal perfection of your setup in your home studio “lab”. Try again?

I'm convinced Henning could make hardened dog shit with electronics shred...just effortless. I'm clearly a bridge player as I prefer it on both; with that second voicing with distortion on the HB being the best imo.

Gibson wins hands down the HB has know body depth , you might as well have the pickups attached to a piece of plywood at the end of the day, You can dress up the HB with diamonds 💎 but it will always be a $2 hooker LOL😂😂

For me cleans sound better on Gibson and when it comes to high gain i'd rather play HP, so basically it's the question of which guitar feels better in hands... For me that heel of the neck is a no-no i really hate when my palm get's on that edge so Gibson lost me there. I haven't had a chance to hold an HB so i have to rely on your opinion and say that HB wins here for me. I'd repaint the headstock thogh :)

Just my opinion on what i was seeing in the video... not fact, it just appeared to me that you were really connecting to that specific LP... i.e. you appeared to be very comfortable navigating the neck, and I liked the melodies you were playing on the LP more than the typical nodding... could be nothing, just one perspective

Very interesting your videos and also this competition! 👌 According to the les Paul sounds, in my ears, the Gibson wins clearly. 👍 It's the question, what kind of sound you want to create with a les paul style guitar building in some high end pickups? A better competition had been to pimp up the SC 550 with some Gibson style humbuckers! 👌 Than you would have had the naked true competition according to the wood and neck/fretboard. I am playing too with the idea 💡 to buy a SC 550 and to pimp it up with a pair of seymour Duncan's pearly gates, because, honestly, I can't afford a Gibson. Gibson builds GREAT guitars and a Gibson Les Paul with such a flamed AAAA malle top drives me tears in my eyes according to the price! Even before 15 years I had Gibson Les paul custom and the pickups where not what I wanted this time => I builded in a pair of pearly gates and even scalloped the ebony fretboard and played the guitar good 10 years. It sounded Great. Until the point, I met a Squier with one piece maple neck and sold the Les Paul. 😭..... Later I found out, that I prefer the Jacaranda fretboard on the les Paul's. The one I had was the more expensive custom model with ebony on the fretboard, which creates another tone. However.....that's how life goes. And there are many things influencing the sound, even not only the pickups.....

I have to give it to the Gibson for sound. For a better comparison, maybe put in the same pickups the Gibson has and see if it makes the HB sound like a real Gibson? That's the real question.. can you make $250 guitar sound just like an $1800 guitar by by putting in a $300 set of pickups?

I loved the video however I felt that you rushed into it without having to know the Gibson before you started recording. It came off looking rushed. Thank you though. I chose the Harley Benton if I had to keep the guitar as a daily player but the resale value is better on the Gibson - obviously.

Not a fair comparison since they don't have the same pups. The HB has more sustain. Seems like you lost the woody tone of the HB once you put those fishman pups in there. I have had 3 gibsons for most of my life and I'm 60 now and some of the Chinese instruments are as good or better than the 70s Ibanez. Though I believe the Ibanez artist with the brass sustain block under the bridge (70s) can't be beat for sustain. Imo.the tritone switching on the artist will give you at least 9 sounds.

The output of the LP is way too much. It's compressing the amp. I had a guitar with pickups like that and it's so frustrating. "Great" for strumming a few chords in a guitar shop but really frustrating and boring in the long run. PAF's don't have that much low end boom.
