Just been playing a friends new Harley Benton LP 'B' Stock... If you can find the blemish in the finish, in the right light, you are doing well! It plays like a dream, out of the box and sounds, well, not so far away from a Gibson! Through a tube amp it is awesome for the money! Rock, blues, clean... Excellent!

First of all, nice demo/shootout! To my ears the SE sounds more like an SG with hotter PU´s, the LPJ and the 450 sound actually quite similar. the more muddier/warmer sounds of the 450 should come from the chromed pu covers, because they normally kill some higher frequencies. And/or maybe different valued capacitor and pots. Overall the most LP sounding of the 3 for myself here is the Harley Benton. The Gibson sounds just way more brighter and the PRS has too hot pups for my taste or to sound similar to the other 2.

I own an LPJ 2014 and personally love it. yes, they need a little work to get to the standard range of playability, but in its essence it really is just a striped back standard, although a little brighter because of, I assume, the maple neck.
@kickblake8 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear: the PRS does have a full-thickness maple cap, it's just not flamed. The pretty flames are a veneer. Also, everything you said about the harley benson being muddy and not articulate sounds, to me, like "the les paul thing." So it's kinda funny that you tried 3 "les pauls" and the one that sounded most like a les paul...wasn't the ACTUAL les paul.
@paulmearing91925 жыл бұрын
The Benton does have a maple cap with a veneer there's a video strip down of of one. I bought the SC450 and it's unreal for the money. I've played USA strats and owned Gibson's. Like all copies you get up to 90% but it's the 10% that makes the difference. They are as good if not better than guitars 3x the price though. I done a little recording with mine (after a light stoning of frets and truss rod adjustment) on my channel. They are a great mod platform if you want to upgrade one.
@jarrydee27995 жыл бұрын
I always thought LP's were muddy. I bought the HB Sc550 just to have . LP to record with, I sold my real gibson. I really like the way it sounds, not muddy at all. I really like ti more than I did my Gibson that I sold.

I don't know how you feel about Harley Benton guitar company, but, I think you completely undersold the sound of the Harley Benton. The only sound where the LPJ shined was on the faster solo section where the picking and legato sounded quicker, but, that was it, it sounded quicker not better. I much preferred the sounds on the PRS and HB. The PRS SE costs around $1,050 AUD without delivery, the HB costs under $300 AUD with delivery from Germany, hmmm, we might have a winner.

Heritage guitars are a great alternative to Gibson. They are made in Kalamazoo at the old Gibson factory, on the machines Gibson used to make their guitars on, by some of the guys who used to make the classic Gibsons. Price wise they are slightly less than Gibson. Their Les Paul style are right around $2k. Seriously though these Harley Benton ones are tempting for me just to have a beater guitar that I can add some nicer pickups and hardware and not worry too much about it.

The neck and nitro finish are so much better than the super shine of the Ltd high gloss. If you like the bling though...

I have a 2008, 2014, 2019 no issues. I think people are band wagoning the brand because it’s in style? Although mine were bought used. And I don’t care about the corporate crap either. But, I also have LTD’s and I like em too! Don’t get caught in the brand game. Try the guitars, and as the man says, use your ears and hands to make decisions!
@mattlillis61525 жыл бұрын
Something to keep in mind watching this comparison is that the 2014 LPJ Gibson has 61 humbucker pickups in it, which are pro-quality pickups. The 245 comes stock with 245 SE pups which are overseas knock offs of their US pups. I don’t know what the HB has, but I’m sure they’re cheap. Gibson usually has decent hardware and the resale value is good.
@Iluvmycowcow8 жыл бұрын
I prefer the PRS but I could see an argument for any one of them, they all have different characteristics... Though, I think if the Harley Benton and LPJ had the same pickup upgrades, the Harley Benton would probably sound better.

Just stumbled onto this back video .... great job on it !! I actualy think the HB sounds the best & makes it more so VERY BFYB !! Also amazing playing !! :) The PRS SE's are all pretty much made in the "1 world guitar factory" in Korea where they also make Agile, Chapman, Schecter, LTD, Dean, Diamond(formerly DBZ). But PRS is the only 1 whom's authorized to say on there guitars there produced by them. It's this factory that is responcible for most of the great or amazing low-high/midrange priced instruments from those companies. As for the LPJ, there is few reasons why there not around in the 2015 lineup. 1. the CEO has said "there shouldn't be a Gibson sold under $1000" ergo the ONLY guitar under $1k is the Les Paul jr. @ $950. 2. all the xxJ series guitar's where outselling the higher stuff cause of the fact they where 1/5th the cost & gave you latterly the same "feel" as the top stuff. & lastly 3. the "rumor" was that all the xxJ series guitar's where actualy Asian produced parts that Gibson then had sent back to the usa for assembly & setup before they went out. (also in what you mentioned in this video, many folks whom buy they xxJ stuff say it seems to be better made then the higher end stuff too lol) Again, thanks for the video's & the candid honesty in them !! :)

Gibson is worth the money, their cheap models are excellent. Thought the HB guitar sound great for the price, it does not sound like something i would record with. The LPJ however is perfectly fine to do a proffesional recording with. You can hear that both the PRS SE and HB have frequencies that are not particulary musical, they are for beginner/intermediate guitarists. The LPJ is a professional instrument.

Should've had a Dillion DL-650 in there, those are such sweet instruments. I had a 2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's and then I got my Lemon Drop Dillion...the Gibson was promptly sold. The Dillion was just the better guitar hands down. The Gibson had fretwork that was atrocious for a $2500 guitar and would've needed a fret job to play without buzz, the Dillion was set up perfectly and even the stock pickups were useable. Mine was made in S. Korea and the build quality is excellent, on par with the top-tier PRS SE models. I highly recommend one if you're in the market for a LP-style guitar, you simply can't go wrong.

I like that hint of glassy Gibson chime at 15:10. The other two did not seem to have it. The HB L-450 sounded nice when over-driven and when soloing at the end of the video. I hope my HB XT-22 will sound this nice when it is delivered to my house next week!
@guitagious94645 жыл бұрын
Addendum: After having the HB XT-22 for about a half a year now, I've decided to sell it. Although it looks amazing with that amber flame top, it just doesn't play like I think it should - and this is after a full set up with everything adjusted to my normal preferences. I can't really explain it except to say it feels like it is fighting me while I'm playing it, and I therefore tend to make more mistakes on it than when I'm playing my other guitars. The nut is cut correctly and the neck is adjusted well - string action is nice and low. Yet something is not the way I like my guitars to feel. It will probably make a nice instrument for someone else, but isn't quite what I am looking for. On a positive note, the Roswell pickups do sound nice, and the weight of the guitar is pleasingly on the lighter side. The guys in our band like the way it sounds too. I think I'm just used to a different size fretwire than what this guitar came with, but a good fret job would cost more than what I paid for the guitar. Anyway.. just my observations after playing and tweaking it for months. I'm either going to trade it for a PRS SE 245 Standard, or put it on ebay for a steal of a price.
@retiredguyadventures62114 жыл бұрын
Back in those days I think the HB and the PRS SE were both made at the same factory in Korea. The HB is actually a Samick if I'm not mistaken. I hears PRS started making their guitars in Indonesia so as to have better quality control. I think I agree the LPJ has more grit than the other two guitars, but I still like the PRS SE. Kinda makes me want to maybe put LP pickups in a PRS SE...

I really like the feel of the lpj. I acknowledge it's not the best but it's not supposed to be. I like the feel of the flat finished and the open wood pores. The thick neck is great too. It's my thick heavy unrefined guitar for thick heavy riffs.

I realize it is all opinion but I love the LPJ finish. I have never been a fan of the high gloss. Also, the LPJ has a maple neck which contributes to the tone from that of the traditional mahogany neck. I don't think it "feels" cheap. It is basically a Les Paul studio with satin finish; also I love your PRS SE245 as well.

Amazing comparison! PRS is the best if you want a modern guitar, with amazing versatility; that shines under high gain. The Gibson definitely sounded the closest to the real deal. Very vintage voiced pups. They also have a very nice growl, as you would expect from the higher graded Gibson pickups. Not sure why some Gibson fans hate these pickups. I wish we were back in 2014-2015, when great rosewood-neck guitars can be found at 600 EUR. Nothing to say about HB, sounded cheap, but it's totally expected at that price point.

I've always been a Gibson guy. My first real guitar was an '05 SG special faded. I've recently switched to a PRS S2 Vela. It's a great guitar and definitely my main guitar now. PRS are definitely top of my list. I've been watching a lot of Henning reviews on HB guitars, more specifically the strat and tele style. I'm definitely interested. I'm not a real strat or tele guy, so I don't necessarily care about the Fender name and the affordability of HB is a real draw for me. Does an HB $200 outdo a $200 Squier? I'm american, so the cost of shipping and returning if its unplayable is something I have to consider.

The prs wasn't made to sound like a Gibson. It was for their normal clientele who just want the look hence the reason why the pups are straight up prs. I think Paul knew l.p. buyers would immediately change the pups. I've been playing for forty years and I find that a guitar that pretty is going on the wall to look at. I can't bring myself to play that pretty of a guitar. It's like a fine woman you sit back and admire. Give me a lightly grained maple top and I'm ready to play. To bad with the CITE organization ,rosewood army not allowing Americans to buy from outside the country if the guitar has rosewood. Thomann said the minimum purchase would be 500$ for us due to all the paperwork and licensing to ship overseas. I love my vintage v100 icon. The neck profile is exactly like a 60s l.p.. great fit and finish. I really wanted the HB pts copy. The Japanese furniture companies are the largest consumer of rosewood. Apparently they sell a crap load of high end tables. What guitar makers buy is small in comparison great vid as always. You are one of a handful of tasteful, melodic players out there on YT.

I actually have a theory that the SE 245 pickups are ceramic with reversed wiring offset to give them the smoothest sound ever. I think your word "sterile" for these PRS pickups is actually fair. It's a nice sound, but its high-output (ceramic?) pickups require gain to really come to life compared to the Gibson's vintage alnico pickups which have immediate character. The HB sounds the most like a real Les Paul Standard's fat sound, but it's a bit lower in overall quality rather than the other two or an LP Standard. Maybe close, though! Still, all three sound fantastic in the last solo sections of the video. I'm looking at getting the PRS and putting Gibson or Duncan hot-wound Alnico V pickups in it.

Great stuff here, nice video comparison, but too bad you didn't include the Vintage v100 LP... I wonder why?

Gibson's 2015 lineup was awful, I have no idea what they were thinking. That being said though, the 2016 lineup is a lot better. They have stepped up their quality and have gone back to making guitars they proper way. Every company will have their bad years and Gibson's was 2015. I'd never buy anything Gibson made in 2015. Fantastic guitar playing by the way, very smooth and just absolutely amazing.

love that new amp you have. imo the hb kept up with the others. looks like id the new japan. no one liked the idea of ibanez copying gibson but that didnt stop us from playing them because they sounded and played great. in the 1970 gibson was dropping the ball and as a college student 240 bucks for a new ibanez was a no brainer. henning you should sell those backing trax

The Harley Benton top has grain running horizontally and vertically which I think would indicate a thin veneer over the true grain of the body which runs vertically?

You have gotten better 👍

And the cheap Gibson was still the best and you were way more fluid on that 👊👍

The Gibson and PRs sounded better clean but I am not sure they was much different when they were played with fx. Looks and sound wise, so similar. Playability can't be that much different according to this vid. The only other things would be tuning and possibly intonation but the HB sounded good.

Super Video🎸🎼🎸🎼👍🙂

I tried them twice. I bought a DC custom and it wouldn't do anything so I thought I would try again so I ordered the PRS look alike and paid for it and they shipped it but I never got it. It was supposedly lost by DHL and I guess that it is just too bad and I'm out the money. Thoman sure don't seem concerned!

Jesus fucking christ you're good at playing them les pauls! im a pretty strict acoustic player but watching you play makes me wanna get on electrics like crazy!
Believe me when I say the quality of guitars TODAY has almost never been better. When you would buy a cheap beginner guitar in the 60's, or 50's It would be a beginner instrument and nothing more. Today we could buy a cheap guitar and it would be twice as good as beginners guitars in the early days. Even if I look at my drum kits, I have a 1990's pearl kit, a 2004 drum and a 2011 drum kit, and the old one has crap hardware, crap shells, crap everything. While my 2011 drum kit is made superior even with the fact it's made in Korea. the shells, wood, finish, ect ect.... are perfect and I really mean PERFECT.... QC these days are better than ever, people just don't know if you build 100 guitars you maybe will have 2 of the 100 that are not well build, but if gibson makes 1000 guitars and 20 of them are not well build it really is the same percentage as the smaller company, Gibson has had a lot to learn from over the years and quality wise gibson is superior these days.
@EytschPi429 жыл бұрын
You are totally right, quality has improved greatly, but when it comes to Gibson I hear many stories from unhappy customers and I also play and hold many in my own hands... for the price, there are many better options... as far as quality goes and most certainly when it comes to tone.
@trillrifaxegrindor44117 жыл бұрын
gibson is at the absolute bottom,you are very sadly mistaken on them being of superior quality.they are about a 25% crap to decent ratio and maybe 2-3% are exceptional.these figures are unacceptable for a $3000-$5000 guitar. i owned a 69 gibson les paul custom,it was awesome,i owned a 96 standard,it was o.k,ive owned 3-4 les pauls and sg'sa since 2013 and they are shit.2 out of 3 were dung shaped into a guitar.

HB...Not bad, not bad
@benindavisca5 жыл бұрын
No....not bad is a serious understatement. It sounds great. Just different. They are all different. Which one you prefer.. THAT is what it comes down to. Spend a few bucks more on a HB sc550.. sounds amazing and still hundreds less than either of the other 2.. drop some gibby pups in if you must..bingo
