Kite Man is kind of an interesting subject with how the show writes him. Right from the beginning he's easy to dislike and you feel like Ivy can do way better, but while he never loses that side to him we can see more and more a bit of charm to his simple and overall genuine personality, where there's rarely a time I could say that I can't ever say that I don't see at least something in him that Ivy would gravitate towards. Ultimately, he's honestly not the worst match for Ivy. There is something for her there. The problem in the end though is both of their own issues and insecurities that screws everything up. In many ways, their relationship was very surface level because they were afraid or unwilling to go much deeper.

"Ultimately, he's honestly not the worst match for Ivy." Well yeah but their specific issues means he's not a good match either. Between a lack of drive (which is fine if you're happy with it, In real life I'm a lot more like him than any other character myself, but he's not actually fine with it) and his self-loathing it's not a healthy relationship at all. That last part, the self-loathing, is the root of all of Kite Man's problems, if he gets rid of that he'll be a different person and can finally have healthy relationships but he's not there yet. And of course on Ivy's side she's still socially inept even if she's learning and she has so few deep connection with people that she will hold too tight on them even when it's unhealthy to the point of lying and/or changing herself for it. She's been so lonely earlier in life that she now over-corrects with the relationships she has. Just like Kite Man, she's not ready for a healthy relationship yet. So on that part we agree but the problem is how their personal issues interact. If they just had issues with no synergies, they would have a chance to work on it and get better. But Kite Man's personality combined with Ivy's desire for retaining deep connections means that she tries to please him too hard by letting go of her personal goals, and Kite Man's self-loathing combined with how seemingly incredible Ivy is (she has super powers which is a deep issue for Kite Man, she's beautiful, she strong-willed and is super smart, and even though she has deep flaws, Kite Man never really focus on them) means that Kite Man tries to please her too hard too. It's not the kind of relationship where you can slowly work on your issues, it's the kind where each flaw feeds on the other in a vicious circle that can basically only end in deep resentment years down the line. So I wouldn't say they're not a bad match up. In the future they might be a good one, but they'd basically be different people and it's impossible to predict how future them would turn out. Right now they really aren't a good one.

@@Arkayjiya It's why I really liked how the series wrote the love triangle drama. All three have their various and established issues that get in the way of a healthy relationship. HarlIvy wins out in the end but Harley's also the one who changes the most over the series and becomes less toxic as time goes on. While the ending was a little rushed, I do like how Ivy only hooks up with Harley after she is given the full assurance that Harley actually wouldn't just abandon and hurt her again like she did in season 1. Harley was a relationship that excited her and Kite Man was a relationship that she felt safe with. Ivy, very understandably, wanted a relationship with both those aspects but seemed like she could only get one, thus her abandonment issues causes her to go with the safer option at first. The Harley who saved her wedding, even when it went directly against what she herself would want, even with everyone including Ivy looking at her like a homewrecker, and offered to personally pronounce the two as husband and wife, just because it's what would make Ivy happy, that's the Harley Ivy feels she could have an exciting relationship with but also that she won't be guaranteed to have her heart broken in the end. Make no mistake, going into season 3 Harley and Ivy are still going to have issues they'll need to work through to keep their relationship healthy. Harley's just now been shown she'll actually put in that work and not just leave and after Kite Man's final words to her, Ivy's likely going to be the same, because she knows how unfair she'd been to him.

I really tried to give this show a chance, but it so obviously tries to pander to it's audience with their whole political schtick and edginess, that I quickly became fed up with it as a whole.

@@oliviarogers3559 I think there were enough little hints and set-up to help me buy that the two were starting to have an attraction towards each other, with the kiss after the escape from Bane being when they realized that they had those feelings. S1 when Ivy blushes and moves her hair out of the way when Harley is complementing her, calling her glowing and fired up. The two of them together on the pier as they're melting Ace Chemical executives. Even Harley being the representation of Ivy's biggest fear, not Kite Man, because Harley is the person she's closer to more than anyone else and thus the one she's at the most risk of being hurt by. There are more examples I could probably find (I'm listing everything off the top of my head) but there were enough to justify to me spending many episodes after the kiss exploring the new dynamic. This isn't Korra and Asami, where it happened at the very last minute. The topic was brought up and the show actually did things with it. The montage of HarlIvy clips that plays during Joker's little speech when he realizes how much he actually does care about Bethany spells it out. "We could just sit on the couch talking about nothing for hours. She just...got me. She always had my back. ...Good god. That's true love." The two were and are friends but as time went on the two, and especially Harley, came to realize how what they had between each other was a relationship they had always been wanting, especially in comparison to their others, and wanted to push it further. I also disagree that Ivy was given moments of "I love you, but not in that way.", especially after the bachelorette party. When Harley asks to be together, Ivy doesn't reject her because she doesn't have feelings for her too but rather because she's afraid Harley might break her heart, which is the exact opposite. I like the romance plot because it all builds on what was established about the characters. Ivy has clear abandonment issues and Harley already hurt her back in S1 when they were just friends, so how painful would it be if Harley just left her behind after they became a couple and Ivy gave even more of herself to her? Ivy wasn't certain that Harley had truly changed, thus she understandably couldn't bring herself to take that risk and why she stays with Kite Man. Kite Man isn't a bad guy and Ivy did like him but their relationship, very intentionally, does not have anywhere near the level of depth to it that Harley and Ivy have and certainly not to the level that's appropriate for marriage. Ivy and Kite Man's relationship is comfortable and safe, but like was pointed out by Kite Man himself, he's the one who'd been pushing their relationship to go further every step of the way. Ivy never, even in S1, wanted their relationship to go beyond the casual. She only asked Kite Man to propose to her the third time because she felt it's what she should do, because she, like he, was afraid she would never get anyone better. Think about every time we ever heard about Ivy and Kite Man's relationship, S1 and S2. It mostly consisted of cooking and eating chili, watching TV, and having sex (nice). Not bad by any means but no depth to it. They weren't living together. Ivy hadn't told anyone else she was dating him, they just figured it out on their own (save for Harley). He didn't introduce Ivy to his parents until after they were engaged and there's certain no indication she ever told him abut her father. And as their wedding vows showed, they'd never ever actually talked about their future together. Ivy and Kite Man were not a bad START to a relationship but they were nowhere near ready for as serious as things got and they only got as far as they did because of their own personal issues and insecurities, which I like. It's character driven.

I was trying to picture Kite Man as a real villain. It wouldn't be that hard. Imagine : Gotham has a new serial killer in town. His victims are always children, never older than 12. They are found dead, crucified, with their abdomen being cut in a "cross form", and the way the skin is being unfolded and the intestines are lying down in a long trail... evokes a kite. A kite made of blood and guts. And with the blood is always written on the head of the child " H E L L Y E A H ". And that's how mothers warn their children about wandering alone in the streets of Gotham... "Fear the Kite Man... or you will float too"
