I forgot to mention two important details in the video: 1. The temps were taken with an IR Gun on the cylinder heads, right near the spark plugs 2. The drops of 25*-50* on the cylinder heads result in a drop of 7*-12* ET (Internally mounted OEM heat sensor)

I have a 1991 HD Tour Glide, I installed 2 fans on the oem oil cooler to help assist the cooling and a oem HD engine Fan. That mounts on the left side were the horn is located and I relocated the horn underneath the left passenger floor board. It sure does help keep my old EVO cool. I will now install an External Breather. And remove the Air / Hot Box. And keep improving my bike.

This is great info. Many thanks. I like the appearance of the mighty mites. They are not so big as to detract from the engine. I'll be getting some this winter, maybe santa will show his stuff and drop some down my chimney. That would be nice because I like to ride in parades. I want to make a side note. I watched a video where a guy did a very scientific test of oil and its ability to remain stable at high temperatures. Synthetic oil was able to remain safe as a lubricant at much higher temperature than standard petroleum oil. I highly recommend Amsoil for the air cooled engines. My 2000 twin cam now has 88,000 trouble free miles on it and it is not noisy at idle. I have the factory mufflers so we can listen to the engine. No unusual noises in there. I got the message regarding synthetic oil and heat tolerance when I bought a new vehicle with a turbo. The factory manual recommended synthetic because it was less likely to clog the tubes that fed oil to the turbo. Now with 258,000 miles it still runs great.

Thank you for the comment. I think you'll like the looks and function of the Force Flow Fan. Mighty Mites will work also. www.dkcustomproducts.com/jims-force-flow-fan-cools-twin-cam-engine.htm No doubt, synthetics can take more heat than conventional oil. Usually, on synthetics it is the additive package that will fail before the oil.

Ok i glad you brought this up so i can tell you how i manage my two money pit Harleys. I have two bikes that are similar as far as cooling or somewhat . One is a 13 Roadglide with a modified SS 143 ..Compression is 12.2 and both bikes have ss 640 cams . Both bikes have oil temp gauges that replaced the silly air temp gauges . I use the mity mite cooling fans on both bikes . The other is a 12 street glide with a SS modified 124 set at i think 11.6 . Both have oil coolers of course. Both have chain drive ect ect . Here is what i do to make these bikes work for me . I refuse to ride in large towns stop and go traffic. I avoid this peroid . I dont like to ride in 100 deg weather not interested. The mite mite fans help a lot . I keep a check on the oil temps of these engines . I had good experience doing this. Ridding two seems to as expected drive up the temp a bit . I would like to increase the oil cooler size a bit on both as i think these coolers control heat for x amount of hp but since these make more then more heat rejection is needed . I not going to cook a expensive engine from stop and go traffic in 100 deg weather. I just load my bike up in a inclosed trailer and go to where cool is and ride. Or wait till it gets cool and ride . Both these money pits are fun to ride because they run pretty good on 91 0r 93 fuel . Keeping the temps in check is important to me

Good to read that you are taking care of your bikes. Keeping that temp down improves power and engine longevity. There are quite a few little things that can be done to lower the temps even more, and possibly widen your riding window. The fan market has been evolving, especially over the last 14 years since HD went all EFI and really lean due to EPA requirements. We discovered these particular fans about 5 years ago and have been well pleased with them. There was another company making some good fans also, unfortunately they went out of business. Regarding Harley...sometimes it is perplexing why the do and don't do certain things.

This was a long debate with many, air-cooled or water-cooled. Air cooling is simple because there isn't an extra system to maintain and they weigh less, however water-cooled motors have higher fuel efficiency, better performance (the same sized engine can run higher compression ratios and thus generate more power) and also lower emission (especially important when exporting bikes to countries with strong emission laws). Air cooling also has the size limitation - especially on motorcycles - as the heat sinks have to be increased with the square of the displacement increase size. I personally had three bikes in my 15 years or riding, none was water-cooled, but I can understand why so many motorcycle manufacturers eventually went to that.

Yep, and as time passes HD will probably fully migrate to water cooled.

So much depends on what bike you have, what kind of riding you primarily do, the weather you live in, and most importantly, what temperatures your bike is experiencing in the metal and in the oil. This entire series linked below gives the whole picture and should help you make the decision- kzbin.info/aero/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C

I just did the UltraCool 3.0 it's strictly oil temp. I still watch my engine temps run high 280°f+ in stop & go for 30-40 min before oil gets to 230°f & fans kick in & it doesn't lower engine running temps that much 270°, but that's better than 310° I'm considering the horn fan in combination & removing left side seat shield to direct better flow.
@PotatoeJoe69
@PotatoeJoe69 2 жыл бұрын
Well they stand to gain massive benefits from water cooling, like more consistent power production, and the obvious better cooling, which in itself will allow for higher compression ratios which will mean more power and torque. It can also be done without it even looking like it's liquid cooled; Harley's used steel tubular frames, I don't see any reason why Harley-Davidson couldn't just make a portion of that tubular frame basically a radiator. Run the hot coolant through a section of it, make it a little bit thicker, use it as a radiator, it would never look like it was a liquid-cooled bike but it would have all the benefits of one.
@DKCustomProducts

An interesting idea for sure. Back, almost 20 years ago, I considered using the engine guard as an oil reservoir/cooler. Got very close to doing it...but realized I did not want to have to keep any bare skin away from the engine guard to avoid being burnt. About 10 years ago I explored a few different bikes that used parts of the frame for the oil tank...decided against that for a variety of reasons. The Twin Cooled bikes have dual radiators, each with their own fan, and the coolant runs up near 200 F. Not at all sure how it would work out running coolant thru the frame...no fins for heat dissipation, let alone a proper radiator. I think HD is pretty committed to head down the path of the massive radiator on the 100% water cooled RevMax engine. We'll see over the next couple of years how that works out.
@chopperchopster

I’d think the rear cylinder at higher speeds is soaking in the hot air blowing back from the front. And my oil tank is right behind them both. I wonder what that is cooking at? I know that I’ve felt the oil cap through my jeans . When it starts feeling like I have a lit cig in my pocket I let her rest. That first 40 something degree drop was impressive. Glad I saw this before pulling the trigger on other products. 👍🏼

@DKCustomProducts

@@kfiercohen6910 It depends on what kind of riding you do and what kind of temps you're experiencing. Oil temp takes a long time to normalize with the engine temp...so lots of short and/or slower speed riding will benefit more from the fan. Longer, higher speed riding is when your oil starts getting as hot as the metal in the engine. You already have an oil cooler on your Road King, so even in those situations it is hard to say without knowing your engine and oil temp which would be better. The fans sit close to the cylinders, dimensions are 25mm thick, by 120mm square. I know a little large, to a degree, but I'm also placing a grill that matches the fins of the engine. Works well. We have tested that (pulling instead of pushing) and did not get nearly as good results. I agree with you on the pushing from the left side to the right side where the intake is. @@DKCustomProducts awesome, thank you so much for that info! I think I know which way I will be going now. And I will definitely be using your link to purchase. Along with the frame mount kit and I have been told that is a must have with these. I used the vibration master on the last set I installed and it worked ok. I hope the Frame Mount Kit is a little more stable.

So they are hotter at 70 than stop n go traffic?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. There is much more work taking place at moving the bike down the road at 70 mph. Over time, in STOPPED traffic (not stop n go) you may approach the temps seen at 70 mph. But if you are stopped for 15 minutes or more, shut if off and it won't get as hot as running down the road at 70 mph. Here is another video with numbers showing heat at different speeds and in stop n go. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bHLLgaSModt4Y9k

Kevin are the mighty mites better than the Jim’s fan ?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
They are good for about 5 degrees cooler...not much, but a little. The Mighty Mites are a bit less expensive too. However, I like the looks of the ForceFlow better, and with all the other cooling mods I have, this tilts toward the ForceFlow on my Touring model. On the Softail in this video, I do like the MM's better for the look.

@@DKCustomProducts Looks like the mighty mites blow on each cyl head separetly. I too like the look of Jims forceflow better. Which installation is easier and how does the forceflow hold up to vibration?
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigdog3495 Yes, there is a strong focused flow of air from each fan directly toward the spark plug area on each cylinder. I would say the installations are about the same, maybe a tad easier with the ForceFlow, since there is no reinstallation of the cowbell, AND no monkeying around trying to get it centered like on the MM's. As far as vibration, the FF vibrates less...it has two mounting points rather than just one. We've never had a FF fail (but that does not mean that failure is impossible), we have only had one MM fail, and that was on a Stage iV bike with aggressive cams that had a lot of vibration.

Never done any measurements of that. If it is above 40* ambient I am always running the fans, and it is cooler, so there is more air on both cylinders with the fans than without.

Please somebody help me understand. Harley is in business of producing bikes for over a century. Why doesn’t motorcycle that cost as much as a car have air cooler fan installed right out of factory. It might not be as good of machine as it is portrayed.
@DKCustomProducts
@DKCustomProducts 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. Possible answers...they want you to buy more stuff after the purchase of the bike. They are not needed for the average rider, since the average rider only does around 3000 miles a year, and the warranty is only for 2 years. 6000 miles will not require warranty work for heat damage. Here is one of the things HD is doing- kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6vdlGCvmdSnhbM We'll see how that works out.

Having two cylinder behind each other has never been good V twins should be transverse and not hidden behind the front forks and mudguard. Water cooling only allows cooling to be moved to a better place for airflow.

I own a Twin Cam 88 and a 75 Ironhead. The Ironhead runs so much cooler than the 88. Why? Well let’s tell the truth instead of looking for excuses. Big inch Harleys are woefully underfinned on the heads and cylinders,; yes rears are hotter but that has always been the case; it’s nothing new. Just accept the fact that they are in engineering terms and capacity outside of their comfort zone by a country mile. They should never have gone beyond 74 cu. Fitting fans etc is just a bandaid for a broken limb. The quicker Harley learn that the design is bust in these idiotic capacities the better; the customer always pays.

Yeah, we recommend doing one cooling mod at a time...then when you get your temps to the optimum, no more is needed. Fans are one of the last things to do, only if you need that extra cooling. I regularly run in 90-100 degree temps, with a heavy load and/or at speed, so I need them to get my temps to the optimum level.

Harley is so far behind. Why didn't they go with water cooling years ago? Oh ya, now they finally replaced the girls bike (sportster) with water cooled version finally after all these years. Too little - too late. My Hondas are water cooled and never have over heating problems like Harleys do. While riding to Sturgis across South Dakota, Harleys had to slow down because they were over heating in the 100 degree heat and couldn't keep up to my 1100 Honda Shadow. A $30,000 bike that can't keep up with a $4000 used Honda? WTF?
